Facebook will no longer allow third-party data for targeting ads Posted: 28 Mar 2018 06:25 PM PDT Facebook announced today that it's disabling a form of advertising targeting called Partner Categories, which allowed prominent third-party data aggregators like Experian and Acxiom to provide clients with offline data like purchasing activity to inform ad targeting. The move comes amid the fallout from the ongoing Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal, and it follows similar moves from the social network to curtail abusive ad practices. Those include a momentary pause on third-party app approval announced today and new limitations imposed on the volume and type of data third-party apps are given through APIs like Facebook Login announced last week. As pointed out by Recode, Partner Categories is not what allowed Cambridge Analytica... |
Westworld’s hosts just took over HBO to reveal a new trailer is coming tomorrow Posted: 28 Mar 2018 05:01 PM PDT The second season of HBO's Westworld will premiere on April 22nd, which means it's time for a new trailer — and this afternoon, the network announced one was coming in an unorthodox fashion. At 8PM ET / 5PM PT, the feeds for all HBO and Cinemax channels "glitched out" simultaneously, airing a brief teaser clip with footage from the upcoming episodes, while promising that the full trailer will arrive on Thursday, March 29th, at 11AM ET / 8AM PT. The clip is short, interspersed with digital noise and lines of computer code that will undoubtedly soon be analyzed by the show's rabid Reddit fanbase. But the footage itself is intriguing. There are glimpses of heavily armed security forces, presumably from Delos, Inc., landing on a mysterious... |

Boeing production plant hit with WannaCry ransomware attack Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:23 PM PDT A Boeing production plant in Charleston, South Carolina was hit by the WannaCry ransomwear cyberattack on Wednesday, according to a report from the Seattle Times. Mike VanderWel, the chief engineer at Boeing Commercial Airplane production engineering, sent out a company-wide memo calling for "all hands on deck." "It is metastasizing rapidly out of North Charleston and I just heard 777 (automated spar assembly tools) may have gone down," reads VanderWel's memo, according to the Seattle Times. The company worries the virus may hit equipment used in functional airplane tests, which could lead to it spreading to airplane software. WannaCry, which the Trump administration blames on the cyberterrorism unit of North Korea as of December 2017, a... |

A Palm smartphone reboot is reportedly coming to Verizon later this year Posted: 28 Mar 2018 02:56 PM PDT Verizon may launch a new Palm device in the second half of this year, an anonymous source told Android Police. The rumor backs up what a TCL executive said last August, when he confirmed to Dutch publication Android Planet that the company would launch a Palm phone this year. TCL did not respond to comments when we reached out at the time, despite previous reports that the company had no plans for the Palm. There are little details beyond a supposed release date for this new device. According to Android Police's report, the phone is expected to run on Android OS, and TCL has reportedly returned to Palm's erstwhile partner, Verizon, for the impending release. The carrier sold most of the brand's phones, including the Palm Pre 2. |
Facebook temporarily blocks new apps from joining its platform Posted: 28 Mar 2018 02:37 PM PDT Facebook paused its app review process last week to "implement new changes," the company quietly announced yesterday. Facebook's move to momentarily prevent new apps and chatbots onto its platform comes after the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal that's unfolded over the last two weeks. The ongoing situation has embroiled the company in an existential crisis of unprecedented magnitude after up to 50 million Facebook users profiles' were compromised by a third-party app. Last week, Facebook said it will further limit developers' access to user data. Now, Facebook appears to be reevaluating how it approves apps due to how easily the third-party survey app, called "thisisyourdigitallife," was able to mine data and sell it with... |
Otto co-founder Lior Ron leaves Uber Posted: 28 Mar 2018 02:03 PM PDT A co-founder of Otto, the self-driving trucking company acquired by Uber in 2016, has left the company according to CNBC. Lior Ron co-founded Otto (née Ottomotto) with Anthony Levandowski in 2016 shortly before it was acquired by Uber, a move that was at the center of the recent Waymo v. Uber trial. Ron has served as the head of Uber Freight, the company's trucking arm, since the acquisition. A source familiar with the situation confirmed Ron's departure to The Verge. Uber declined to comment on the specifics of Ron's departure. "We remain fully invested in and excited about the future of Uber Freight," a spokesperson said via email. "We believe it will continue to grow as we use our network and technology to transform the trucking... |
Activists say Airbnb makes New Orleans housing shortage worse Posted: 28 Mar 2018 01:17 PM PDT Airbnb and other platforms for short-term rental listings are exacerbating the housing crisis in New Orleans, says a new report from the Jane Place Neighborhood Sustainability Initiative (JPNSI). The analysis in the report falls in line with similar findings in other cities — a substantial chunk of short-term rentals are controlled by operators with multiple properties, suggesting that landlords are choosing to put units on Airbnb and other sites, eschewing long-term tenants. The rosiest picture of an Airbnb host is a homeowner or tenant running a casual bed and breakfast or letting out a spare room. But Airbnb listings are often put up by landlords who are serially renting multiple properties on Airbnb — and in New Orleans, the... |
