Amazon’s Music Storage service will remove your MP3 files on April 30th

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 05:11 PM PDT

We've known since last year that Amazon Music was planning to shut down its dedicated cloud music locker. Now, we have a date for when that process will begin. In an email to Amazon Music users, the company says uploaded songs will be removed from a user's library on April 30th, 2018. You can however keep any music in the cloud by proactively going to your Music Settings and clicking the "Keep my songs" button.

Back in December, Amazon stopped letting users upload new tracks to Music Storage, which holds up to 250 songs for free. The company said at the time that by January 2019, users wouldn't be able to download or stream tracks they've uploaded to Music Storage, so it sounds like you'll still have many months between April and next...

FCC approves SpaceX’s ambitious satellite internet plans

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 04:09 PM PDT

The Federal Communications Commission today granted SpaceX a license to operate an array of broadband internet satellites, marking the first time the government agency has given the green light for a US-licensed low-Earth orbit broadband service. SpaceX co-founder and CEO Elon Musk has been discussing a micro-satellite constellation for providing broadband internet for years, and in 2017 the company began accelerating its efforts by meeting regularly with the FCC and applying for a license that would allow it to operate in an unused portion of the FCC-regulated broadband spectrum. The company plans to call the service Starlink.

Earlier this year, SpaceX launched the first two of its planned 12,000-satellite constellation. It appears...

In a leaked memo, Facebook executive describes the consequences of its growth-at-all-costs mentality

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:58 PM PDT

A leaked memo from a Facebook executive has described the consequences of the company's growth-at-all-costs mentality. BuzzFeed on Thursday published a June 2016 memo by Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, who currently leads the company's hardware division, in which Bosworth says he wants "to talk about the ugly" aspect of the company's work.

"We connect people. Period," Bosworth wrote. "That's why all the work we do in growth is justified. All the questionable contact importing practices. All the subtle language that helps people stay searchable by friends. All of the work we do to bring more communication in. The work we will likely have to do in China some day. All of it."

Bosworth distanced himself from his comments. "I don't agree with the...

Tesla issues its largest recall ever voluntarily over faulty Model S steering

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:00 PM PDT

Tesla said Thursday it was recalling a huge number of its Model S sedans around the world over a power steering issue. It told customers in an email that it was a proactive move and none of the company's other vehicles were affected.

The automaker said 123,000 Model S vehicles built before April 2016 were affected. No injuries or crashes have been reported in connection with the problem. Before today, its largest Model S recall was when 90,000 of the vehicles were affected in 2015 by a faulty seat belt. And last year, it recalled 53,000 Model S and Model Xs over a parking brake fault.

In the email, Tesla said it had, "observed excessive corrosion in the power steering bolts," but that the problem was most prevalent in colder climates...

Under Armour says 150 million MyFitnessPal accounts compromised in data breach

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:34 PM PDT

Sportswear brand Under Armour announced today that its subsidiary MyFitnessPal was affected in a significant data beach, compromising as many as 150 million accounts. Account information involved in the breach includes user names, email addresses, and hashed passwords, but no financial information like credit card numbers or government or identifiers like social security numbers.

Under Armour acquired MyFitnessPal, a website and mobile app for tracking diet and exercise activity, in 2015 for $475 million, when MyFitnessPal had 80 million users. The service has since more than doubled in size thanks in part to the company's largely agnostic approach to apps and fitness trackers, nearly all of which can be plugged into MyFitnessPal for...

LG went to Reddit’s Android community for feedback on smartphone notches

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 01:56 PM PDT

You may be surprised to hear this, but smartphone notches have been pretty controversial: some people hate them, other people... don't have strong opinions on the matter. But no one loves the notch. So to find out how people are really feeling, LG has gone to Reddit and asked. As spotted by Android Police, LG's support team posted in r/Android with the timeless, thought-provoking question: "What are your thoughts on 'the Notch'?"

"We would love to gather some more feedback to share with our R&D team — and this is where you come in," LG writes. "So… what do you think? Love the Notch? Or is it Notch your thing?" (I'm sorry but the pun is part of the quote, and I can't get rid of it.)

It's not entirely clear what LG is doing here. LG's next...

All non-citizens will have to disclose social media accounts at the US border

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 01:13 PM PDT

A proposed State Department form would require all US visa applicants to disclose their social media handles, according to a Bloomberg report. The requirement is significantly broader than previous filings, which had made disclosure voluntary and applied to only a portion of visa applicants identified for extra scrutiny. The public has 60 days to comment on the proposal; comments can be sent to PRA_BurdenComments@state.gov.

The new forms will list specific social media platforms and require applicants to "provide any identifiers used by applicants for those platforms during the five years preceding the date of application." Platforms may be added or removed as the system develops.

It's the latest in an ongoing effort to collect more...

Serial subject Adnan Syed will get a new trial

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:18 PM PDT

Adnan Syed, the man at the center of Serial's 2014 investigation into the murder of high schooler Hae Min Lee, will get a new trial, NBC Washington reports. Although Syed was initially granted a new trial in 2016, the state appealed the decision. Today, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals decided it would uphold that ruling, paving the way for Syed's new case.

In 2000, Syed was convicted for the first-degree murder of Lee, his ex-girlfriend. Lee's body was found in 1999 in a Baltimore park, following her disappearance weeks earlier. During Serial's first season, host Sarah Koenig and her investigative team dug into the circumstances around her death, as well as the questionable proceedings of the trial itself; Koenig's reporting...
