The LG G7 has a 'super bright' 6.1-inch LCD screen Posted: 24 Apr 2018 08:03 PM PDT LG has started its usual cycle of announcing features of its upcoming flagship phone before announcing the phone itself, and this time it's for a pretty significant spec: the G7 ThinQ's screen. We know from countless leaks that the G7 will have a display notch, but now LG is going on the record about its technology. The G7 screen is a 6.1-inch IPS LCD panel with a resolution of 3210 x 1440. LG is particularly talking up the screen's brightness, which goes up to 1,000 nits while supposedly consuming up to 30 percent less power than the G6's; it's even being branded as "Super Bright Display." The screen also covers 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut. These specs alone aren't necessarily groundbreaking, so we'll have to see how LG's... |
Anker announced an affordable AirPods rival and a bunch of new speakers Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:18 PM PDT Anker's audio brand, Soundcore, is releasing more than a dozen new speakers and headphones to welcome actual good spring and summer weather. Soundcore, like its parent brand, makes solid products at affordable price points. Most of these speakers and headphones stand out for their battery life, which is Anker's main advantage as a company known for its portable batteries and chargers. First up, there's the Space NC, noise cancelling headphones with over-ear cushions. They have 40mm dynamic drivers and supposedly up to 20 hours of wireless battery life with noise cancellation on. When I tried them on and played a video of a roaring jet in the background, there was a small but noticeable difference between having the noise cancellation on... |
These glittering ribbons scare away baby birds and also my focus Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:04 PM PDT A few days ago, I hung sparkly strips of ribbon on my windows to keep baby birds from braining themselves on the glass. The sparkles are driving away the birds — and my ability to concentrate. There's a circle of hell where you have to finish an assignment, and these eye-catching ribbons just keep glittering away. It all started last spring, when a baby scrub jay took one of its first flights straight into my window. I can still remember its parents hopping and screaming around the dead little blue body. Although outdoor cats are the biggest killers of an estimated 1.85 billion birds a year, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service, building glass comes in second. Birds fly into windows that reflect the environment — turning the glass... |
YouTube channels are using bestiality thumbnails as clickbait Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:02 PM PDT YouTube videos with thumbnails depicting women engaging in various sexual acts with horses and dogs populate top search results on the video platform, according to a report from BuzzFeed News. Some of these videos, which can be easily found through YouTube's algorithmic recommendation engine after searching innocuous phrases like "girl and her horse," have millions of views and been on the platform for months. Of course, YouTube videos depicting such acts would be more easily caught by the company's algorithmic filters, its user-reporting system, and its human content moderators. Harder to find and weed out are videos that use graphic and obscene images as thumbnails, alongside clickbait titles, to juice viewership and generate more ad... |
Avengers: Infinity War is stunning, hilarious, and heartbreaking Posted: 24 Apr 2018 03:00 PM PDT The most definitive overarching issue with the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been the lack of stakes. Over the course of the saga's previous 18 movies, MCU heroes have faced numerous world-ending threats, eking out victories by the skin of their teeth, only to have their worlds essentially return to normal in time for the next installment. The approach worked early, on a film-by-film basis, but when viewed as part of a 10-year narrative, it's tended to weaken the broader franchise. There can be no drama without true risk, and in the MCU, audiences have learned that none of their favorites are ever really in harm's way. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo seem acutely aware of this issue with their latest entry, the massive, multi-film... |
Amazon teases upcoming Fire TV Cube Posted: 24 Apr 2018 02:46 PM PDT Amazon has confirmed the existence of a new "Fire TV Cube" device through a new teaser page, as found by AFTVNews. There's basically no other information on the new device aside from the name and an email list that users can sign up for that promises more details "coming soon," but there's a good chance that the upcoming Fire TV OS device already leaked months ago. Last fall, AFTVNews published pictures of two leaked Fire TV devices: one, the square-shaped Fire TV dongle that turned out to be real, and a second, cube-shaped set top box. The second device (pictured below) is likely the upcoming Fire TV Cube, which is said to be a new flagship device for Amazon that will combine the Fire TV with the company's Alexa-powered Echo speakers... |
Pepper the Robot is working at the Smithsonian for free Posted: 24 Apr 2018 02:35 PM PDT SoftBank's Pepper the humanoid robot has held a variety of odd jobs over the past few years, but a gig at the Smithsonian may be its most prestigious yet. Starting today, visitors can interact with Pepper at six Smithsonian locations to inquire more museum information, play games, or ask it to pose for a selfie. It even has its own security badge.
Unlike a few other commercial locations, the Smithsonian didn't actually buy Pepper robots... |
Xbox One April update rolling out with low-latency mode, FreeSync, and 1440p support Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:51 PM PDT Microsoft is rolling out a new Xbox One update today that centers on better audio and visual support. The biggest addition is 1440p support for the Xbox One S and X, allowing gamers to use a monitor and make the most out of QHD (2560 x 1440) displays. It's a resolution that's usually popular with PC gamers, and Microsoft is also adding AMD's FreeSync support to allow compatible displays to sync refresh rates with Microsoft's consoles. FreeSync, like Nvidia's G-Sync, helps remove tearing or stuttering usually associated with gaming on monitors, as the feature syncs refresh rates to ensure games run smoothly. Alongside this stutter-free tech, Microsoft is also supporting automatic switching to a TV's game mode. Auto Low-Latency Mode, as... |
Turns out Facebook moderation sucks because its guidelines suck Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:51 PM PDT Facebook has finally made its moderation guidelines officially available to the public in full and boy is this a fascinating glimpse into a convoluted set of rules that once censored the entire ACLU Facebook page over a post about ... wait for it ... censorship. (The case in question concerned a partially nude statue in Kansas which would likely now fall under an allowed category called "paintings, sculptures, and other art"). It's not the first time the public has gotten to see Facebook's internal logic in action — portions were published from documents leaked to the Guardian last year — but this time, Facebook is posting its Community Standards to gather input from users. Facebook's moderation guidelines are notoriously... |
Google autocomplete and YouTube algorithm are spoiling the new God of War Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:50 PM PDT If you're looking forward to playing the new God of War, a word of advice: be extra careful around Google or YouTube, which are accidentally spoiling major plot points of the game through rogue algorithms. Without going into specific details (since I'd like to avoid leaving you to the mercy of those same spoilers), even typing in phrases as seemingly innocuous as a character's name brings up massive spoilers for the end of God of War as the first suggestion on Google search results. (We've tried this ourselves and it definitely works). And there are multiple Reddit threads complaining of similar spoilers of boss fights or crucial moments in the game through suggested YouTube videos.
