Fujifilm made its first ever square format analog Instax camera Posted: 14 May 2018 07:00 PM PDT Fujifilm is announcing a square format analog Instax camera, and it sounds like a cute novelty gift to whip out at the dinner table. It's called the Instax Square SQ6, and it's an instant film camera with a 1:1 aspect ratio, which renders photos in a 2.4-inch by 2.4-inch square format. The Instax Square SQ6 has an auto-exposure control feature so that you don't have to manually tweak the settings for a perfectly exposed photo and a sensor for detecting surrounding brightness that will adjust the shutter speed accordingly. It comes with three color filters — in orange, purple, and green — that can fit over the flash to add a different look. There's also a selfie mode that adjusts the focus and brightness to take better close-ups. The... |
Amazon Go’s cashier-less stores are coming to Chicago and San Francisco Posted: 14 May 2018 02:56 PM PDT Amazon Go is heading to Chicago and San Francisco, according to a report from The Seattle Times, marking the first expansion of the online retailer's cashier-less grocery store from its initial Seattle location. Per The Seattle Times, Amazon has posted job listings for store managers at upcoming locations in Chicago and San Francisco. An Amazon representative later confirmed that the company is planning to open Amazon Go stores in those cities, although no timetable or date has been announced yet. The news isn't a complete surprise to those who have been watching Amazon closely. Curbed reported back in February that Amazon had bought a retail space in Chicago, and The San Francisco Chronicle reported... |
Jake Paul’s influencer circle begins to crumble as his dad comes aboard Posted: 14 May 2018 02:31 PM PDT Team 10, the social media incubator of Jake Paul, is in turmoil. Founded as an "influencer squad" for the prominent YouTube star, it's included both longtime friends like Chance Sutton and his current girlfriend, Erika Costell. Team 10 members collaborate and even all live together with Paul. "I formed it because I wanted to start a crew," Paul told Forbes in 2017. "If you look at the biggest people on social media right now, it's the Kardashians. My goal is to form a crew that's bigger than them collectively." Over the last few weeks, however, Team 10 has been losing some of its biggest members as part of what appears to be a larger transition. Chief operations officer Nick Crompton announced his departure on May 4th. Sutton posted... |
Panasonic made a rugged point-and-shoot with an electronic viewfinder Posted: 14 May 2018 02:20 PM PDT Panasonic has announced the Lumix TS7, a new sub-$500 point-and-shoot camera, which also doubles as a rugged camera for the most adverse conditions. The TS7's core attributes include waterproofing to 102 feet, MIL-STD 810F certification (surviving drops at 6.6 feet), is dustproof, shockproof, and freezeproof down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. I haven't had any hands-on time with the TS7, but specs-wise it seems to show promise. A 20.4 megapixel sensor shoots up to 10fps, or 4K video at 30 / 24fps. A three-inch rear LCD monitor is the key visual on the TS7, with a 1,040K-dot resolution screen. However, if you swear by shooting through the viewfinder, there's a 0.2-inch, 1,170K-dot equivalent live viewfinder available. This isn't the norm... |
Tesla rejected more advanced driver monitoring features on its cars Posted: 14 May 2018 01:28 PM PDT Engineers inside Tesla wanted to add robust driver monitoring systems to the company's cars to help make sure drivers safely use Autopilot, and Tesla even worked with suppliers on possible solutions, according to The Wall Street Journal. But those executives — Elon Musk included — reportedly rejected the idea out of worry that the options might not work well enough, could be expensive, and because drivers might become annoyed by an overly nagging system. Tesla considered a few different types of monitoring: one that would track a driver's eyes using a camera and infrared sensors, and another that involved adding more sensors to the steering wheel to make sure that the driver is holding on. Both ideas would help let the car's system know... |

Guillermo del Toro is making a horror series for Netflix Posted: 14 May 2018 12:27 PM PDT A horror anthology series by Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind The Shape of Water, Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Pacific Rim and some incisive design critiques about UFOs, is on its way to Netflix. Titled Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight, it will feature horror tales selected by del Toro, who will also write and direct some episodes. The series is the first horror anthology for Netflix. According to Deadline, del Toro will be teaming up with his Shape of Water co-producer J. Facebook data on 3 million users reportedly exposed through personality quiz Posted: 14 May 2018 11:43 AM PDT Facebook data on more than 3 million people who took a personality quiz was published onto a poorly protected website where it could have been accessed by unauthorized parties, according to New Scientist. In a report exposing the potential leak, New Scientist says that the data contained Facebook users' answers to a personality trait test. While it didn't include users' names, in many cases it contained their age, gender, and relationship status. For 150,000 people, it even contained their status updates. All that data was supposed to be accessible only to approved researchers through a collaborative website. However, New Scientist found that a username and password that granted access to the data could be found "in less than a minute"... |
Google will make its paid storage plans cheaper Posted: 14 May 2018 11:29 AM PDT Google is rolling out new changes to its storage plans that include a new, low-cost storage plan and half off the price of its 2TB storage option, the company announced today. It's also converting all Google Drive paid storage plans to Google One, perhaps in part because you'll now have one-tap access to Google's live customer service. Google One will get a new $2.99 a month option that gets you 200GB of storage. The 2TB plan, which usually costs $19.99 per month, will now cost $9.99 a month. Finally, the 1TB plan that costs $9.99 a month is getting removed. The other plans for 10, 20, or 30TB won't see any changes. Google will also make the plan shareable within a family of up to five members, and give users access to live chat support... |
RIP Margot Kidder, Lois Lane to a generation Posted: 14 May 2018 11:26 AM PDT Actor Margot Kidder died on Sunday at the age of 69 from unspecified causes. The star of popular '70s horror films like Black Christmas and The Amityville Horror, she is best known for her iconic role as Lois Lane in the Superman film series of the 1970s and '80s alongside Superman star Christopher Reeve, where she defined the role of the Daily Planet's ace reporter for a generation. One of the most popular and bankable female stars for nearly two decades, Kidder struggled with bipolar disorder and homelessness after a public breakdown in 1996. In 2006, after 10 years without a depressive or manic episode, she urged people to have more empathy for those struggling with mental illness. "We are all, each and every one of you in this... |
