This Japanese foldable E Ink typewriter is coming to the US

Posted: 15 May 2018 06:21 PM PDT

Pomera is a line of minimalist writing computers from Japanese company King Jim. There have been various models in the past ten years or so, but generally the idea is that they're super-portable devices with proper keyboards, monochrome screens, and long-lasting battery life so you can carry one around and get it out to write whenever you need. You can then transfer text to your phone or computer via QR code or microSD card.

Now King Jim is bringing Pomera to the US for the first time via a Kickstarter campaign. The specific model is the DM30, which is set to release in Japan next month and has a neat folding keyboard design like the rest of the DM line. The screen is a 6-inch E Ink panel, and the battery should last for 20 hours off two...

The Justice Department and FBI are reportedly investigating Cambridge Analytica over Facebook scandal

Posted: 15 May 2018 04:52 PM PDT

The Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have launched an inquiry into Cambridge Analytica, the data mining firm that last month announced it would be shutting down amid the Facebook privacy scandal that embroiled the social network starting back in March. The investigation, the existence of which was first reported this evening by The New York Times, is still in the early stages and we don't yet know if it has anything to do with Cambridge Analytica's connections to the 2016 presidential campaign of President Donald Trump, according to The Times.

The firm supposedly provided ad targeting expertise for Trump's campaign based on data it acquired from Cambridge psychology professor Aleksandr Kogan, who gathered the...

Google is delaying a Chrome audio update that broke countless web games

Posted: 15 May 2018 04:30 PM PDT

Google is partially and temporarily rolling back a recent Chrome change that blocked autoplaying audio, after web developers complained that it had broken countless games and apps. The update rolled out with Chrome version 66 in early May, and it was intended to quiet annoying ads and videos that would drive users toward ad-blocking software. But it also ended up completely removing the audio from interactive web projects that relied on specific commands, which created problems for artists — and doomed any abandoned projects to silence.

"The team here is working hard to improve things for users and developers, but in this case we didn't do a good job of communicating the impact of the new autoplay policy to developers," writes Google...

The new AI-powered Google News app is now available on iOS

Posted: 15 May 2018 03:32 PM PDT

Google said last week at its I/O developer conference that the revamped, artificial intelligence-powered Google News would be arriving on Apple's App Store some time in the next seven days. That time is apparently now, as the new Google News has gone live on iOS this afternoon and replaced the old Google Play Newsstand app. You can find the iOS link here. In the event you're looking for already-live Android version on the Play Store, you can find that here.

The new Google News on iOS is similar to the one you'll find on Android. It centers around using machine learning to train algorithms to comb through complex, fast-breaking news stories and break them down in easy-to-understand formats like chronological timelines, local news...

Solo: A Star Wars Story — our spoiler-free review

Posted: 15 May 2018 02:00 PM PDT

For a film franchise that's more than 40 years old, Star Wars has had a surprisingly hard time finding its voice lately. J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens successfully relaunched the series after a 10-year cinematic hiatus, but some fans felt it copied George Lucas' original 1977 film too closely. The standalone Rogue One: A Star Wars Story attempted to use the fantasy world to tell a gritty wartime tale, but Disney was ultimately unhappy with the result, and writer-director Tony Gilroy was brought in to help Gareth Edwards' film over the finish line. Last year, writer-director Rian Johnson pushed the series in intriguing new directions with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but that also led to fan complaints — this time, that the installment had...

Yanny or Laurel? The science behind the audio version of The Dress

Posted: 15 May 2018 01:45 PM PDT

Once there was the dress; now there's Yanny or Laurel.

This audio illusion, which went viral after first appearing on Reddit, has the internet torn. After all, what kind of monster doesn't hear Yanny?

When Verge Science listened to it this morning, fighting broke out between the Yanny and Laurel factions. (Ed. note: I briefly lost my mind, as I first heard Yanny, then heard Laurel for about two hours, and now hear Yanny again. Same device, same speakers. Please send help.) Obviously something was going on — so we called up some scientists to help us figure it out. According to Lars Riecke, an assistant professor of audition and cognitive neuroscience at Maastricht University, it's not actually an illusion. In fact, it's an ambiguous...

Samsung’s Galaxy S9 now supports Google’s ARCore

Posted: 15 May 2018 01:37 PM PDT

Until today, Google's augmented reality developer platform, ARCore, was available only on Pixel / Nexus devices and a select few handsets from brands like Asus, Huawei, LG, Moto, and Sony. But an update to the list of supported devices, spotted by 9to5Google today, now shows ARCore support for Samsung's Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.

Prior to the update, ARCore-optimized apps could only run on Samsung devices in the midrange A series and on the S7, S7 Edge, S8, and S8 Plus. Effectively, ARCore makes it easier for developers to make use of the smartphone's blend of hardware and software to create more immersive and realistic AR applications. Without ARCore support, AR apps won't run on phones as well as they could with Google's optimization...

Netgear is releasing its Arlo security light to catch intruders on your lawn

Posted: 15 May 2018 12:46 PM PDT

Netgear's Arlo security light has a release date, after being announced late last year alongside other products in the company's Arlo home surveillance lineup.

It retains the IP-65 weather resistance and rechargeable battery seen in all other Arlo products, but also features motion detection, the ability to change the sensitivity of detections, color temperature, and even flash red, as a warning to intruders. The Arlo light's max brightness is a blinding 400 lumens, but saves energy with a battery saver function to cycle between day / night cycles. The light is also compatible with the $79 Arlo solar panel, in case you never want to worry about charging it.

For those of you looking for nearly effortless control over the Arlo light,...
