Kia Niro EV revealed in production form with ambitious range promises

Posted: 04 May 2018 03:58 PM PDT

Kia Niro EV

Back at CES in January, Kia teased an upcoming Niro EV crossover that boasted a Chevrolet Bolt-rivaling 238 miles of range. While that concept also had 5G connectivity and a new infotainment system with gesture controls that didn't seem bound for production, the Niro EV itself is destined for showrooms.

Kia on Friday showed the first photos of the Niro EV as it made its debut at the 5th International Electric Vehicle Expo in Jeju, Korea. Minus the flashy show car add-ons, the styling largely mimics that of both the CES concept and the standard Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrids. The automaker said the Niro EV will use a 64 kWh battery pack that will allow for an estimated 280 miles on a single charge (450 km). A separate 39.2 kWh pack from...

Apple admits some iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models have disabled microphones during phone calls

Posted: 04 May 2018 02:38 PM PDT

Apple today admitted that some iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models running iOS 11.3 or later may have a bug that disables the microphone during phone calls, MacRumors spotted through a leaked document. The few users with the affected devices may see their speaker button grayed-out when making calls or video chatting through FaceTime. The issue seems to only affect phones running that version of iOS or versions after 11.3.

Some users on Reddit and Twitter have reported experiencing such microphone issues in the past few months and the leaked document, sent out to its Apple Authorized Service Providers network, apparently confirms Apple is aware of the problem.

Apple is recommending these tech support workers tell customers to first unpair or turn...

Enjoy this AMA with predictive text Ross Douthat

Posted: 04 May 2018 02:24 PM PDT

Ross Douthat, a man who is somehow regularly published by The New York Times, recently shared an editorial in which he responded to the growing phenomenon of men murdering women because they don't feel like they're getting laid enough by thoughtfully stroking his goatee and conducting a thought experiment about the "redistribution of sex." Among the non-incel factions of the internet, it has not gone over well.

Although he never says "to men" in the piece, that is its overwhelming implication; his preoccupation with satisfying the boners of entitled dudes as the one and only solution to gender and sex-related social issues is unquestionably paramount. While he admitted, in an exhausting "clarification" (read: doubling down) thread...

Waymo self-driving minivan involved in crash in Arizona

Posted: 04 May 2018 01:52 PM PDT

A self-driving vehicle operated by Waymo was involved in a crash in Chandler, Arizona, on Friday afternoon, according to local news stations. Images of the crash scene showed a Waymo minivan with its side caved in and another vehicle with a smashed front end. There were minor injuries reported at the scene.

Chandler police said the Waymo van was in autonomous mode with an occupant behind the wheel at the time of the crash, but it was not the "violator vehicle," according to ABC 15 News. A spokesperson for the Chandler Police Department and Waymo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In March, a self-driving Uber vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian, the first known victim of a crash involving a self-driving car. In...

LG’s budget K30 phone comes to T-Mobile in the US

Posted: 04 May 2018 01:02 PM PDT

LG refreshed its midrange phones at Mobile World Congress this year. And while we were all distracted with its flashy flagship devices this week, one of those affordable phones — the K30 — became available at T-Mobile. It's a rebranded K10, which LG announced in February this year. It features a 5.3-inch HD display, 32GB of storage, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 2,880mAh battery. T-Mobile doesn't even list the phone's RAM (likely 2GB) or processor model, so that's a great sign. It's running Android 7.1 Nougat, unlike the K10, which runs Marshmallow, according to XDA-Developers and T-Mobile.

Now, T-Mobile says the phone charges over USB-C on its website, but XDA-Developers says that's wrong...

In season 2, Dear White People takes on trauma and the internet

Posted: 04 May 2018 12:29 PM PDT

In April 2017, when the first season of Netflix's acclaimed Dear White People premiered, many critics and viewers remarked on how "timely" it was. After all, the half-hour series — which deeply explored topics such as racism, black identity, and the myth of the "post-racial" society — debuted just a few months after Donald Trump was sworn into office. Season 2, which premiered on Friday, May 4th, focuses largely on the resurgence of white supremacists, alt-right trolls on the internet, and the psychological effects of racial trauma. It's sure to be heralded as just as timely — if not more. But the "timely" description also feels a little easy: when haven't these subjects been timely within the black community?

Google has partnered with Fandango to offer movie ticket purchases from Google Assistant. To buy tickets, just say "buy tickets," or you can say, "Hey Google, get me tickets for..." with the name of the film you want to see. If you're not sure what you want to see, just say, "showtimes near me," and Google will bring up a selection of films playing at theaters located near you. You can find out more about a film by asking "who stars in it?" or "show me the trailer."

You can also buy advanced tickets for upcoming movies with the feature. When you use the prompts with Assistant on your phone, it pulls up a selection of theaters with available times.

Google News is getting a revamp with more video and faster load times

Posted: 04 May 2018 11:51 AM PDT

Google is giving Google News a redesign that will bring in elements from its Newsstand app and YouTube, according to sources who spoke with AdAge.

The redesign is expected to debut at Google I/O next week, and the sources say that Google has been in talks with publishers as of late about the impending changes, which will consolidate many Google features into one product. "There are a lot of Google services where you find news," one publishing executive said, "and what they're trying to do is bring it all under one brand."

The sources say that Google News will fold in digital magazine app Google Newsstand as well as the news portion of YouTube. As part of the redesign, Google Newsstand is expected to close and Google News will get a new...

GoDaddy pulled white nationalist Richard Spencer’s ‘alt-right’ site offline

Posted: 04 May 2018 11:50 AM PDT

Domain registrar GoDaddy has taken down white nationalist Richard Spencer's site Altright.com, saying the site "crossed the line" in promoting violence. BuzzFeed reported the news yesterday, noting that Spencer had also been kicked off Facebook a few weeks earlier. Altright.com is currently offline, and GoDaddy told BuzzFeed that Spencer had 48 hours to transfer to a new registrar.

When a site "crosses over to promoting, encouraging, or otherwise engaging in specific acts of violence against any person, we will take action," a GoDaddy spokesperson said. "It is our determination that altright.com crossed the line and encouraged and promoted violence in a direct and threatening manner." Spencer told BuzzFeed that he was "working on solving...
