Avengers: Infinity War has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide Posted: 05 May 2018 12:07 PM PDT Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War has broken another record: it's become the fastest movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office, overtaking the prior record-holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Deadline reports that that the film reached this milestone in just 11 days: it took The Force Awakens 12 days in 2015. The film's success thus far has allowed Disney to cross the $3 billion mark for its overall box office thus far in 2018. What's notable here is that Avengers reached this milestone before it opens in China on May 11th — once it does, that number will likely jump considerably. The film also overtook The Force Awakens' US opening weekend box office record last week when it grossed $250 million when it opened last... |
Google made a fun AI-powered emoji scavenger hunt that you can play on your phone Posted: 05 May 2018 11:00 AM PDT If you have your phone close at hand, open up emojiscavengerhunt.withgoogle.com and see how far you can get. As the URL suggests, it's an emoji scavenger hunt — a new AI experiment created by Google that shows how the company's machine learning tools can be used to make fun little games. In this case, you have to use your phone's camera to find objects that match emoji within a time limit. Each one you find increases your time. It's a well-implemented little experiment, although the object recognition feature can be a bit hit-or-miss. It refused to recognize my plug for example, though I took advantage of its lack of precision later to have a dish towel stand in for a scarf. I got through a dozen items before being stumped by the game's... |
An engineer modded a drone to rescue this puppy Posted: 05 May 2018 10:00 AM PDT In today's adorable-and-I'm-not-crying-you're-crying news, NDTL reports that an engineer in New Delhi named Milind Raj saved a puppy using a drone he equipped with a giant claw. Raj was out for a morning walk in New Delhi when he heard whimpering and traced the sound to a puppy that had become stuck in a boggy drain between two roads. Raj said the condition of the puppy was "miserable" and tells The Verge that local residents had heard the animal crying for two days. Others hadn't stepped up to the task of trying to rescue the pup because "the drain was so filthy," says Raj. "It was not possible for a human to rescue the puppy without endangering their own life." Raj decided to take up the task himself, and immediately set to work... |
Google says political-leaning advertisers will require an ID to verify their identity Posted: 05 May 2018 09:13 AM PDT Google will implement new transparency rules concerning US election ads this week. In a blog post, Google Senior Vice President Kent Walker says that anyone who wants to purchase election ads in the US will now be required to prove that they're a US citizen or resident by providing a "a government-issued ID and other key information." Google also says that it will begin to release a new Transparency Report that will outline who is purchasing political ads, and how much they're spending, and will also roll out a "searchable library" for users to search through to find the identity of advertisers. The move follows updated policies from Facebook, which said earlier last month that it will require advertisers and page managers to verify... |
9 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 05 May 2018 09:00 AM PDT While everyone was watching Infinity War last weekend, I ended up streaming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I've missed most of the core Avengers saga, but there's still a lot of fun to be had watching the more disconnected films in the MCU. Guardians is particularly accessible, thanks to how completely removed it is — and just how tonally it feels like its own thing. I enjoyed the movie, but one thing that really surprised me was how long its final sequence was... if you can even call it a single sequence. The climactic battle takes up nearly half of the movie, with multiple story beats happening just within that fight. Maybe that's not all that strange for a blockbuster film, but I was still surprised by how effectively it could tell... |
Star Wars Day sales, last-minute Mother’s Day gifts, and more of today’s best tech deals Posted: 05 May 2018 08:00 AM PDT Mother's Day is next week and if you haven't gotten anything for your mom yet, you're cutting it pretty close. If she's an athlete, a Samsung Gear Sport smartwatch is a great choice, and for a limited time you can get one for $70 off, plus a free strap. A smart home device like an Echo Show or a robotic vacuum is always a great option as well — bonus points if you set it up for her. Plus, the internet's favorite pressure cooker / slow cooker, the Instant Pot, is on sale for $109.99 (usually $149.99). If anyone in your family doesn't have one of these bad boys, this is a pretty good deal on the six-quart version. Star Wars Day, an equally important holiday, was yesterday, May 4th. (May the fourth be with you, get it?) But plenty of... |
Four features that would tame Facebook Posted: 05 May 2018 07:00 AM PDT Even at the weakest and most embattled moment in its history, Facebook still seems inescapable. It's impossible to leave, as Sarah Jeong detailed last week, and it seems even harder to fix. Facebook has rolled out products like Clear History to deal with data privacy complaints and new ad transparency measures to deal with influence campaigns. But so far, no one's suggested anything that will make it any easier to leave Facebook or to pare back its role in our lives. If your complaint is that Facebook is simply too powerful, the company has done very little to reassure you. It doesn't have to be this way. Facebook's dominance is the result of specific product choices, and there are other products that would undo those choices. We're so... |
Eight things to expect at Google I/O 2018 Posted: 05 May 2018 06:00 AM PDT For a company as big and sprawling as Google, an annual developer conference can feel overwhelming. And, frankly, it is. Google offers a dizzying number of services and dabbles in almost every consumer tech industry under the sun, not to mention the 7 billion-plus user core internet products it owns and operates. But the company has a measured tempo when it comes to Google I/O, and we've come to understand how it prioritizes certain products over others come May every year. At this year's I/O, which will be held again at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California starting Tuesday, May 8th, we know we'll be hearing about the future of Android and Google's artificial intelligence efforts. But there will also be news on... |
NASA’s InSight lander successfully takes off on its way to Mars Posted: 05 May 2018 01:14 AM PDT Update May 5th, 8:35AM ET: United Launch Alliance successfully launched its InSight lander this morning from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, which will now head off to Mars to conduct its mission when it arrives in November 2018. NASA's next robotic explorer is beginning its deep-space voyage to Mars. The lander InSight is set to take off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in the wee hours of Saturday morning, the beginning of a six and a half month journey to the Red Planet. Once there, the little spacecraft will listen for quakes to figure out what Mars is made of. NASA has a long history of launching to Mars, but this trip to the Red Planet is a bit different: It's the first interplanetary mission to take off from... |
