Nintendo is fixing the Switch's bad kickstand with a $20 charging dock Posted: 09 May 2018 07:55 PM PDT The Nintendo Switch is great, but its kickstand sucks — not only is it flimsy, it only has one angle and can't be used while the system is charging because the USB-C port is on the bottom edge of the console. There are a couple of solutions out there, including an elevated stand from Hori and an expensive Twelve South option originally designed for the iPhone, and now Nintendo is attempting to fix the problem itself. The Adjustable Charging Stand is what it sounds like: a charging dock with a kickstand of its own that can be set to various angles. You can plug the Switch's regular AC adapter into the stand for power; there's no HDMI output, mind, so this isn't a full replacement for the TV dock. Really, though, at $19.99 it might be... |
Uber will resume testing self-driving cars in ‘a few months,’ CEO says Posted: 09 May 2018 05:54 PM PDT Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said Wednesday that the company would resume testing its self-driving cars "in a few months." The ride-hailing company grounded its fleet of autonomous vehicles in the wake of a fatal crash in Tempe, Arizona, and has since said it was waiting for the release of a preliminary report from federal traffic investigators before restarting the program. That moment appears to be fast approaching, according to Khosrowshahi. Speaking from the stage of Uber's second annual Elevate conference in Los Angeles, Khosrowshahi said he expected the company's autonomous vehicles to be back on the road soon after the release of the National Traffic Safety Board's report, as well as a "top-to-bottom" internal safety review Uber... |
These Uber Air ‘Skyport’ concepts look straight out of Star Wars Posted: 09 May 2018 04:18 PM PDT If Uber is to get its "flying taxi" service off the ground, it will need dozens of launch pads and landing sites on rooftops around cities as a supportive infrastructure. At the ride-hailing company's second annual Elevate conference in Los Angeles, six architecture firms presented their winning designs of what these so-called "Skyports" could look like. And holy cow, these things look straight out of Star Wars. The "Sky Tower" by Pickard Chilton and Arup wouldn't look out of place among the Star Destroyers and Dreadnoughts of the Galactic Empire (or the First Order, depending on your trilogy). The beehive-esque "Uber Hover" concept by Humphreys & Partners could easily pass for a Ewok village on Endor. BOKA Powell's "Skyport Prototype"... |
Net neutrality, mergers, AT&T, and Michael Cohen: what we know so far Posted: 09 May 2018 03:07 PM PDT In the past 24 hours, a series of bombshells related to the Stormy Daniels lawsuit and the Michael Cohen investigation have dropped: the president's lawyer and "fixer" was apparently paid for consulting with AT&T, Novartis, Columbus Nova, and Korea Aerospace Industries after the president took office. Each of those companies has some kind of a financial interest that the executive branch has influence in (for example, the Justice Department has sued to block the merger of AT&T and Time Warner). Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said in a press conference today that the payments "may well have been used to influence the president of the United States, using Michael Cohen and his shell company as a conduit." |
Apple’s iPhone replacement batteries are reportedly in stock without delays Posted: 09 May 2018 02:28 PM PDT Apple's iPhone replacement batteries won't have any more extended delays due to limited supply, according to a leaked internal memo the company sent to Apple stores and service providers last month that was seen by MacRumors. Now all Apple stores and service providers can order the replacement batteries and get them without delays from supply constraints, though shipping could still take time. Apple previously said it would be low on supplies of replacement batteries until late March or early April, which turned out to be true. Apple's support page currently says that replacing a iPhone battery takes up to five business days, which is what it said prior to this leaked memo. Last year Apple confirmed that processors used in the iPhone 6,... |
Trump administration approves 10 new drone projects around the country Posted: 09 May 2018 02:25 PM PDT Just over six months after President Trump announced the creation of a program meant to spur the development of drone trials around the country, the Department of Transportation has announced the first 10 winners. Among those selected, three state transportation agencies, two US cities, and two universities will work with private companies like FedEx and CNN on trials that will see drones used for tasks like package delivery, journalism, healthcare, and more. "This is such an exciting day for aviation, for safety, for innovation," US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said at an event today in Washington, DC. The US is at a "tipping point" with drones, she said, as 1.1 million of them (and 90,000 pilots) have been registered with the... |
Spotify is testing a new personalized playlist featuring your friends’ favorite songs Posted: 09 May 2018 01:47 PM PDT A couple months ago, some Spotify users noticed a new playlist called Friends Weekly, a curation of songs that your friends on Spotify recently played. It now appears that Spotify is rolling the feature out to a larger group today, although the company confirms to The Verge that it's still in testing. Today, another user with Friends Weekly shared a different screencap with a separate group dedicated specifically to friends' Discover Playlists. Although you can technically follow your friends' Discover Playlists now (if they've made them public), you have to go to their page to find them. This row is a smaller test, and not available to everyone who has Friends Weekly.

Apple will reportedly sell streaming video subscriptions through its TV app Posted: 09 May 2018 01:12 PM PDT Apple will follow the path of Amazon this year and offer customers the ability to subscribe to popular streaming services from its TV app, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Normally, consumers must download and subscribe to services like Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Now, Showtime, and others on an individual basis. But just as Amazon has done with its Prime Video Channel subscriptions, Apple is aiming to centralize those options and have its TV app become the place that iOS and Apple TV owners visit to subscribe to them. The TV app already acts as a hub where users can universally search for and browse shows and movies from numerous service; once they've chosen something, the associated streaming app opens up and immediately starts... |
California is requiring solar panels on all new houses: here’s what that means Posted: 09 May 2018 12:30 PM PDT California has become the first state to require that new homes be built with solar panels. The rules go into place in 2020 and are part of the state's ambitious efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions. But these requirements also make it more expensive to build in a state where housing is already extremely expensive. The new building rules approved by the California Energy Commission apply to all residential buildings up to three stories high (including both single-family buildings and condos). They'll no doubt help California reach its goal of having at least half of electricity come from renewable energy by 2030. Solar is already responsible for about 16 percent of California electricity. But the new regulations mean that houses will... |
How close is Google to building a Paul? Posted: 09 May 2018 12:25 PM PDT As someone who recently got a haircut, Google's presentation yesterday at I/O really resonated with me. Finally, a service that can make phone calls on my behalf and negotiate appointment times with hair salons. Google's Duplex technology even uses the word "um" and sometimes misunderstands what people on the phone are talking about. Just like me! It got me thinking: how close is Google to replacing me altogether? For instance, Google can already write most of my text messages, and now it can help compose for me. Could it write my Verge articles, too? My ego would like me to believe that my writing process is a little more complicated than a Markov chain. For instance, I often Google... |
