California’s bill to regulate Elon Musk’s flamethrower is being held in committee

Posted: 02 Jun 2018 02:42 PM PDT

It's looking like the state of California won't be standing in the way of Elon Musk's flamethrower anytime soon. A bill introduced earlier this year by California Assemblyman Miguel Santiago is being held in the Assembly's Appropriations Committee.

Santiago, who represents Los Angeles, introduced a bill called "AB-1949 Explosives: flamethrowing devices" earlier this year redefining the state's permitting requirements — a person presently wishing to use a device that shoots flames more than 10 feet already has to get a permit — by introducing "Tier II" classification for devices that shoot flames anywhere from two to ten feet, and would "prohibit a person from distributing, selling, or offering for sale a Tier II flamethrowing device in...

President Trump has nominated Geoffrey Starks to replace FCC commissioner Mignon Clyburn

Posted: 02 Jun 2018 01:31 PM PDT

President Donald Trump has officially nominated Geoffrey Starks to the Federal Communications Commission to replace outgoing FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn. His appointment will require approval from the US Senate.

Clyburn said in April that she would leave the commission. Nominated in 2009 by President Barack Obama, she has been a staunch advocate of net neutrality. Her term officially ended in June 2017, but she has remained on the commission while waiting for a successor to be named. Pending Senate confirmation, Starks appears to be that replacement, and his nomination is not a surprise, as he was tapped for the role earlier this year by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Starks currently serves as the Assistant Bureau Chief in...

Google’s Pixelbook is on sale for just $750

Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:30 AM PDT

You might scoff at the regular $1,000 price of Google's excellent Pixelbook. It's fundamentally just a really nice Chromebook, after all. And paying $1,000 for one of those is a hard mental barrier to break. But would a price drop to $750 be enough to change your mind? For "a limited time," Google is discounting the laptop by $250. The sale is good at Google's online store and Best Buy.

That entry-level Pixelbook has a Core i5 processor, 128GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM. To be honest, that seems like all I would ever need out of a machine like this for the foreseeable future. But if you want to load the thing up, the $250 promotional discount also applies to the higher SKUs. So the model with 256GB storage drops to $950 and the maxed out...

Visa’s European network is back up and running

Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:24 AM PDT

Yesterday, Visa experienced a widespread network failure in Europe, leaving many card holders unable to use their credit cards for purchases. Visa now says that it's resolved the issue.

The outage was widespread, but not universal: users could still use their cards, but some major banks, such as Royal Bank of Scotland and the Bank of Ireland were affected. Customers could withdraw money from ATMs, but some retailers resorted to using paper slips to take down customer information. Visa says that the issue was the "result of a hardware failure within one of our European systems," and that it wasn't a cyberattack.

While the issue has been resolved, it does highlight a weak point as countries are increasingly moving towards becoming...

Tesla can change so much with over-the-air updates that it’s messing with some owners’ heads

Posted: 02 Jun 2018 10:00 AM PDT

When Consumer Reports recently found that the braking distance on the Tesla Model 3 was worse than that of a Ford F-150, CEO Elon Musk took the criticism and found a solution. Days later, Tesla shipped an over-the-air update that, according to CR's testing, improved the braking distance by 19 feet. It's a wild idea: your car automatically downloads some code, and it's instantly safer. It also wasn't possible even a few years ago, and some have held it up as an ideal example of how futuristic technologies can make our lives better. Analysts said it was "unheard of." Jake Fisher, CR's director of auto testing (and the person who originally flagged the issue), said he'd "never seen a car that could improve its track performance with an...

Watch three astronauts return to Earth from the International Space station this weekend

Posted: 02 Jun 2018 09:00 AM PDT

A Soyuz capsule bringing astronauts to Earth.

Early Sunday morning, three astronauts will depart the International Space Station and make the 3.5-hour descent back to Earth. NASA astronaut Scott Tingle, Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, and Norishige Kanai of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) are headed home after spending five and a half months in orbit. The departing crew members are making way for a new trio of astronauts, who will be launching to the ISS on June 6th.

On Friday, Shkaplerov, the previous commander of the ISS, handed over control of the station to NASA astronaut Drew Feustel. In the wee hours of Sunday morning, he and his fellow crew will begin their journey to the surface. Starting at 1:30AM ET, the three astronauts will get inside the Russian Soyuz...
