Westworld’s free Alexa game is like a radio drama crossed with a quiz show

Posted: 20 Jun 2018 04:18 PM PDT

Westworld is known for slipping elaborate story hints into its viral marketing material, giving fans an early look at upcoming plot developments. Westworld: The Maze, a short game released today for Amazon Alexa devices, does the opposite. It's a clever tie-in narrative that draws on players' existing knowledge of Westworld lore — or at least their skill at navigating the Westworld wiki.

The Maze follows a voice-controlled "choose your own adventure" format that other Alexa games have used. You play a host who's just beginning to wake up to the nature of Westworld's true reality, thanks to some cryptic advice from a mysterious character in Westworld's Sweetwater saloon. Your goal is to find the center of a metaphorical maze, but to...

Microsoft says it’s no longer planning VR support on Xbox

Posted: 20 Jun 2018 03:55 PM PDT

Microsoft has completely pulled back on plans to support virtual reality headsets on the Xbox. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Microsoft's chief marketing officer of gaming Mike Nichols said that "we don't have any plans specific to Xbox consoles in virtual reality or mixed reality." Nichols goes on to say that the PC is "probably the best platform" for virtual and mixed reality, and that for the Xbox, "our focus is primarily on experiences you would play on your TV."

This basically completes the slow decay of Microsoft's console VR plans, at least for now. In 2016, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said that the upcoming Project Scorpio console would support "high-end VR" like that available on Windows PCs. Since Microsoft had previously...

Tinder parent company buys anti-Tinder dating app Hinge

Posted: 20 Jun 2018 02:06 PM PDT

Match Group, a massive online dating conglomerate, acquired Hinge today in a deal that gives the company a 51 percent stake in the app. Hinge initially marketed itself as a more welcoming version of Tinder in which users could only see potential matches who shared a mutual Facebook friend. The company then redesigned its app to get rid of all swiping features and in its place let users build out full profile pages. Hinge users can answer three questions about themselves, connect their accounts to their Instagram, and also upload multiple photos, making the Hinge experience more like a full-fledged online dating site.

In a prepared quote, Mandy Ginsberg, CEO of Match Group, said, "Hinge is highly relevant particularly among urban,...

Snap Maps update makes your Bitmoji’s world look a bit snazzier

Posted: 20 Jun 2018 01:53 PM PDT

One year after launching Snap Maps, Snap is giving its geolocation feature a lot more visual flair with two updates coming soon. The first big update, World Effects, adds snazzy animations and color schemes to the maps. It will send you and your friends a blast of confetti on your birthdays, and themed maps will also be rolled out for particular holidays and "cultural events."

Maps that are opened around Valentine's Day will turn landmasses pink and fluffy, for example, while doing the same thing around Halloween will reveal a more ghoulish color scheme — with other holiday themes on the way.

The other update announced today, Weather Effects, adds animations based on the weather where the Snapchat user is. A user stuck...

Democratic lawmaker attempts to gut California net neutrality bill

Posted: 20 Jun 2018 12:10 PM PDT

A Democratic state lawmaker from California attempted to gut the nation's toughest net neutrality bill by railroading through standard procedure and forcing a vote on a set of amendments removing the stricter regulations.

On Monday, two California lawmakers struck a deal to combine two competing net neutrality bills in the hopes that it would speed through the committee process and provide the state with a stable net neutrality regulatory framework. The bills, SB 822 and SB 460, from Senators Scott Wiener and Kevin de León, respectively, were both introduced as responses to the Federal Communications Commission's reversal of the 2015 Open Internet Order last December.

The lawmakers agreed to combine the two through a process known as...

It’s not just Microsoft: lots of tech companies are quietly helping ICE

Posted: 20 Jun 2018 11:47 AM PDT

With child separations emerging as a growing crisis at the US border, government contracting has become more controversial than ever. All week, Microsoft has struggled with questions about its contracts with ICE, particularly a January agreement that CEO Satya Nadella defended as a standard IT support contract. On Tuesday, more than 100 employees signed a letter calling on Microsoft to cancel the contract, writing simply "we refuse to be complicit."

Although Microsoft has captured the public's attention, it's far from the only big tech company currently working with ICE. Public records show tens of millions of dollars in contracts with branches of Dell, Motorola and HP, providing crucial hardware and other infrastructure for the agency....

China’s plastic waste ban will leave 111 million tons of trash with nowhere to go

Posted: 20 Jun 2018 11:19 AM PDT

China's recent crackdown on the import of plastic waste will result in millions of tons of displaced plastic trash, according to new research. The ban will force countries like the US to find new ways to deal with their own trash.

On December 31st, 2017, China put a halt to a lot of the plastic waste that foreign countries like the US sent to its shores for disposal. To calculate the impact of that ban, researchers at the University of Georgia looked at how much plastic waste China imported from 1988 to 2016. They then used that information to calculate that by 2030, the ban might leave 111 million metric tons of plastic trash with nowhere to go, according to a study published today in Science Advances.

Since 1988, nearly half of the...
