Netflix PR chief fired for repeatedly using the n-word Posted: 22 Jun 2018 02:55 PM PDT Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has fired his chief public relations executive, Jonathan Friedland, after his repeated use of the n-word, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Friedland, who's been with the company for seven years, reportedly used the racial slur in a meeting with employees, leading some to report the incident to upper management. Then, in a follow-up meeting with Netflix's human resources department regarding his use of the n-word, Friedland reportedly used the word again. "The second incident confirmed a deep lack of understanding, and convinced me to let Jonathan go now," reads an email Hastings sent to employees that was obtained by THR. "As I reflect on this, at this first incident, I should have done more to use it as a... |
Apple acknowledges faulty MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards with new repair program Posted: 22 Jun 2018 02:35 PM PDT Apple has officially acknowledged that there are problems with its "butterfly" mechanism built into the keyboards of the recent MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops. The company is now offering an extended keyboard service program for computers affected by the issue, via iMore. The extended warranty covers replacement of one or more keys or the whole keyboard, depending on the extent of users' problems, and it covers eligible laptops up to four years after the computer was bought at retail. (Every MacBook and MacBook Pro model with the butterfly switches seems to be included.) That's dramatically longer than the limited warranty the computers ship with or even Apple's extended AppleCare Plus. According to Apple's service page, the program... |
Watch Rocket Lab’s Electron make its first commercial flight Posted: 22 Jun 2018 02:25 PM PDT Today, US spaceflight startup Rocket Lab could attempt something it's never tried before: a commercial launch of its Electron rocket. This will only be the Electron's third flight and the first of what the company hopes will be monthly launches by the end of the year. If the launch is scrubbed today, check back in tomorrow... and the next day. Every day for the next 14 days, the company will attempt a launch within a four-hour window that starts at 8:30PM ET. Rocket Lab's Electron rocket is small for a rocket. At just 55 feet tall, it's a fraction the height of SpaceX's 230-foot-tall Falcon 9. But the Electron can afford to be diminutive because it's built for putting small payloads that weigh between 330 and 500 pounds into low Earth... |
SpaceX wins bid to fly classified military satellite on Falcon Heavy Posted: 22 Jun 2018 01:26 PM PDT SpaceX has won a $130 million contract to send a classified Air Force satellite to space on its monster Falcon Heavy rocket. The satellite, known as AFSPC-52, is scheduled to launch in 2020. SpaceX beat out the United Launch Alliance, the joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, which was angling to use its own heavy-lift Delta 4 rocket to send the military satellite to space. One of the goals of pitting companies against each other for contracts like these is to reduce costs for the government. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center Commander Lt. Gen. John Thompson said in a statement released on Thursday that awarding the launch to Space X "fits the mission of delivering resilient and affordable space capabilities to our... |
Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited service opens up to iOS devices Posted: 22 Jun 2018 01:20 PM PDT After years of being an exclusive for Amazon hardware, the company's FreeTime Unlimited service is now available on iOS devices. The service houses thousands of children's TV shows, books, and movies. FreeTime first became available to other Android devices last year — four years after the app's initial launch. The app offers content from PBS Kids, Nickelodeon, and Disney, but the experience is slightly different on an Apple device than on an Amazon one. On a Kindle, for example, parents are able to adjust the settings in a way that would keep kids from exiting the app. Apple doesn't allow third-party apps to control an entire device in that way, so parents may have to be a little more cautious if they share their iPad or other personal... |
Logan and Jake Paul’s fight with KSI is shaping up to be deeply embarrassing Posted: 22 Jun 2018 01:16 PM PDT Logan Paul, the YouTuber whose career somehow recovered after a suicide forest stunt, opens his latest YouTube vlog with a telling statement. "A lot of people think this fight is a joke who are not in the YouTube community," he says. "All jokes aside, this will be the biggest event in the history of the internet." "Biggest internet event in history," his younger brother Jake Paul echoes later on. The two YouTube stars are talking about their upcoming boxing match against their UK counterparts KSI and Deji, a much-hyped event for which ticket sales opened up this morning. For the chance to see two pairs of YouTubers noodle around in a ring, some fans are evidently willing to pay up to $600 a pop. The event will likely be well-attended... |
Bethesda is suing Warner Bros for its ‘blatant rip-off’ of Fallout Shelter Posted: 22 Jun 2018 01:08 PM PDT Fallout Shelter developer Bethesda Softworks is suing Warner Bros Entertainment and the creator of a mobile game based on HBO's Westworld for creating "a blatant rip-off" of its game. According to the lawsuit, obtained by Polygon, Westworld Mobile developer Behaviour — which Bethesda contracted to develop Fallout Shelter — "breached its contract with Bethesda and utilized its restricted access to Bethesda's intellectual property." The lawsuit further alleges that Westworld Mobile rips copyrighted computer code used by Fallout Shelter, as well as "highly similar game design, art style, animations, features, and other gameplay elements." This even extends to the bugs present in both games, Bethesda continues. Westworld Mobile's s... |
Valve is shipping new ‘Knuckles’ VR controllers to developers with a Portal-themed demo Posted: 22 Jun 2018 12:46 PM PDT Valve has announced that it's shipping a new version of its experimental SteamVR "Knuckles" controllers to developers, and it's posted a lot of detail about the controllers online, including video of a Portal-themed playground for testing them. The Knuckles EV2 substantially updates Valve's earlier design, and although it's not a consumer product, it's looking more polished — and even less like the earlier Vive controller. The Knuckles controllers, originally shown off in 2016, give users a fuller hand motion range than most VR controllers. Instead of holding them, you strap them around your hand, so you can open and close your fingers normally without dropping the controller. Capacitive sensors detect when individual fingers are... |
Pad & Quill sale makes its bags and phone cases slightly less costly Posted: 22 Jun 2018 12:37 PM PDT Pad & Quill is celebrating its eighth anniversary by offering a rare discount on some of its product lineup. The discount is good for 20 percent off of any item listed on the company's sale page. You may also be able to knock 10 percent off of your entire purchase with offer code PQ16, according to 9To5Toys, though we've had limited success with it registering at checkout. Its leather-bound iPhone and iPad cases are popular among the tech-savvy crowd, but this sale also extends to Pad & Quill's broader lifestyle products, like messenger bags, satchels, duffels, and wallets. Pad & Quill's products are pretty expensive, so it's admittedly easy to find cheaper alternatives. But after almost a decade of existence, the quality of its... |
Mt. Gox says it may start paying back creditors as soon as next year Posted: 22 Jun 2018 12:15 PM PDT The defunct bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox says it will start paying back the people it owes money perhaps by next year, according to an announcement today from the exchange's trustee, Nobuaki Kobayashi. The exchange grew quickly between 2010 and 2014, until an attacker slowly drained the exchange of bitcoins, forcing it to file for bankruptcy. Now, Mt. Gox's bankruptcy proceedings have been paused so that the exchange can pay off its debts. Creditors seeking to be paid back in bitcoin will receive bitcoin back, which could now be worth more than it was when Mt. Gox declared bankruptcy. At the time the bankruptcy proceedings started, bitcoin was worth $440 per token. Bitcoin is worth more than $6,100 per token at the time of writing. Kobayashi... |
