AT&T more than doubles ‘admin fee’ for every wireless customer Posted: 27 Jun 2018 02:45 PM PDT AT&T is raising the cost of an "administrative fee" line item tacked onto the bottom of every single one of its 64.5 million wireless customers in the US, as reported first today by BTIG Research analyst Walter Piecyk. Originally $0.76, AT&T has raised the fee to $1.99. When added up and multiplied by 12 months, the increase will result in an additional $800 million or so for AT&T's annual revenue. According to Piecyk, the fee should only apply to standard, monthly customers, and not prepaid AT&T users. When reached for comment, an AT&T spokesperson confirmed the existence of the fee increase. "This is a standard administrative fee across the wireless industry, which helps cover costs we incur for items like cell site maintenance and... |
You can crowdfund a robot that will nag you to stand up straight Posted: 27 Jun 2018 01:57 PM PDT There's a new robot on Kickstarter that's supposed to help you obtain good posture at your standing desk. It's an Alexa-enabled gadget named Giiro, which uses the accompanying Giiromat, a mat you place on the floor in front of your desk, to sense if you're standing up straight and distributing your weight evenly. Giiro is made by the South Korean IoT company Gaze Lab in collaboration with a startup called Morethings that makes sensor-based products like smart insoles and smart golf mats. Gaze Lab previously launched its standing Gaze Desk on Kickstarter in 2016 and successfully raised enough to launch it. The Gaze Desk could also watch your posture through sensors, but the Giiro robot takes things a step further by giving you a funny... |
Labeling genetically modified food makes people less panicky about it Posted: 27 Jun 2018 01:44 PM PDT Labeling improved Vermonters' opinions of genetically modified food, compared to elsewhere in the nation — even taking into account age and education, according to a study published in Science Advances. People who saw the labels were actually 19 percent less opposed to GMO foods, compared to people who didn't see the labels at all. Vermont was compared to the rest of the nation because two years ago, the state passed a law requiring that all GMO food bear a label. Food manufacturers lobbied against the law, and some pulled their products from the state entirely — apparently out of concern that the labels would drive consumers away from genetically modified food. Scientific organizations, including the American Academy of Sciences, also... |
YouTube picture-in-picture is now available for Android users in the US for free Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:19 PM PDT YouTube is expanding picture-in-picture mode to all users on Android today, whether or not they're paying subscribers to YouTube Premium, as first spotted by XDA Developers and confirmed by Google's support page. The feature — which Google started testing for free customers earlier this year in May — lets users on Android O devices watch YouTube videos with Android O's picture-in-picture mode, without having to pay for a YouTube Premium subscription. There are a few catches, though, as noted on Google's support page: first off, picture-in-picture is only available in the US for now, so international users are out of luck. And secondly, picture-in-picture will work for most YouTube videos, but videos that contain music content will only... |
Twitter’s spam removal is up 214 percent compared to 2017 Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:07 PM PDT Twitter dropped a blog post yesterday explaining how it's currently handling malicious spam and bots. The company says that in May, its system found and questioned over 9.9 million accounts for spamming or being automated. Twitter says it's also monitoring its APIs more strictly. During Q1 this year, it suspended more than 142,000 apps that violated rules and tweeted out over 130 million spam tweets, and kept up the momentum in the following months, removing an average of 49,000 apps each month. Compared to last year, Twitter says it has removed 214 percent more accounts for violating spam policies. It also notes that the average number of spam reports has dropped from 25,000 a day in March to... |
Apple and Samsung settle seven-year-long patent fight over copying the iPhone Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:59 AM PDT Apple and Samsung have finally put an end to their long-running patent battle whose central question was whether Samsung copied the iPhone. In a court filing today, Judge Lucy Koh said the two companies had informed her that they had reached a settlement. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The patent battle started in 2011 and initially resulted in a $1 billion ruling in Apple's favor. But it didn't end there. A series of appeals pushed the dispute to the Supreme Court and back, as the companies continually rehashed which patents were infringed and, more recently, exactly how much Samsung owes Apple because of the infringement. The case revolved around a number of design and... |
Google Calendar now has an ‘out of office’ option Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:46 AM PDT Google announced a new option on Google Calendar that will let users create events marked as "out of office" and customize them with a decline message and visibility parameters. To use the new feature, create an event within Google Calendar on the web and select the "out of office" option. You'll then be able to tailor things like the decline message and choose who is able to see the title of your out of office event. Once created, it will look different than a typical Google Calendar event, appearing at the top of each day chosen with a little calendar icon. During the days you've marked as out of office, Google Calendar will automatically decline any requested meetings and respond with the away message you've chosen. |
Lyft valued at $15.1 billion after new funding round Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:01 AM PDT Lyft has raised $600 million in additional funding, valuing the ride-hailing company at $15.1 billion. The money will fund the company's heated competition with the much more valuable — and better funded — Uber. The funding round was led by Fidelity Management and Research Company, and was raised primarily from existing investors. It comes over six months after raising $1.5 billion led by CapitalG, Google's venture arm. At the time, the company was valued at $11.5 billion. The financing news comes at a time when its main rival Uber is beginning to stabilize after a bruising 2017. Lyft had sought to capitalize on the #DeleteUber phenomenon by marketing itself as a more "woke" alternative. Lyft gained market share and spread into Canada,... |
Feds ran a bitcoin-laundering sting for over a year Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:44 AM PDT More than 40 alleged dark-web drug dealers have been arrested as part of a sweeping federal effort described by the Department of Justice as "the first nationwide undercover operation targeting dark net vendors." The core of the operation was an online money-laundering business seized by agents from Homeland Security Investigations and operated as a sting for over a year. By offering cash for bitcoin, HSI agents were able to identify specific drug dealers, ultimately tracing more than $20 million in drug-linked cryptocurrency transactions. "For the past year, undercover agents have been providing money-laundering services to these dark net vendors, specifically those involved in narcotics trafficking," said HSI Special Agent in Charge... |
