Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 850 processor will arrive in Windows PCs this year Posted: 04 Jun 2018 07:30 PM PDT Qualcomm has announced a new processor specifically designed for Windows 10 Always Connected PCs. The new Snapdragon 850 succeeds the Snapdragon 835 used in the first Always Connected PCs and offers improved performance, connectivity, and battery life. The Always Connected PC platform is Microsoft and Qualcomm's answer to the iPad Pro. It features ARM processors, integrated LTE, long battery life, and an instant-on resume with no hibernation. The Snapdragon 850, which Qualcomm says will only be used in PCs and will not make its way to phones, is essentially a customized version of the Snapdragon 845 that debuted in phones earlier this year. The improvements that it brings to the Always Connected PC platform are in line with that: it has... |
Google is starting to phase out the old Gmail design Posted: 04 Jun 2018 05:15 PM PDT Google has announced plans to start moving users over to the new Gmail design and eventually remove the old one entirely, with the changes kicking off next month. The announcements technically apply only to G Suite users — that is, people who have paid accounts through their company or organization — and Google declined to comment on whether the changes will be the same for regular Gmail users. But chances are they'll be similar: the new design was announced first for G Suite users, but it was made available to free users at the same time. Right now, no one is required to use the new design: it's either opt-in for you, or it's unavailable because your G Suite account's administrator hasn't enabled... |
Huawei’s updated Watch 2 uses eSIM technology Posted: 04 Jun 2018 03:07 PM PDT Last week, Huawei introduced a revised version of the Huawei Watch 2 with one notable change to last year's model: it's adopting eSIM, a still budding technology that takes up less space than regular SIM cards. So far, we know that it can be purchased in China through e-commerce platform Vmall but quite possibly not anywhere else in the world, as GSMArena spotted. The new Huawei Watch 2 seems to be identical to last year's watch, aside from the addition of an eSIM to replace nanoSIM support, which is a significant change. With eSIM, which replaces the plastic SIM card with a smaller, electronic one, the watch can share the same phone number as your mobile device, making it more convenient. Given that the eSIM is much smaller than... |
Apple made a competitive slingshot game to showcase multiplayer augmented reality Posted: 04 Jun 2018 02:45 PM PDT Apple hasn't officially announced an augmented reality headset or goggles, but the company's lack of hardware hasn't kept it from staying at the front of the pack when it comes to AR experiences. The iOS framework that enables these apps, ARKit, got an update announced today at Apple's WWDC, and with it comes multi-person AR software. It's a really interesting feature that opens up a ton of new possibilities for gaming, education software, and a number of other situations in which having a shared virtual environment might be useful. To showcase the feature here at the San Jose Convention Center, the company set up a few of its elongated, trademark wooden tables (seemingly straight from an Apple Store) that acted as a barren surface for... |
The best iOS 12 features that Apple didn’t talk about onstage Posted: 04 Jun 2018 02:41 PM PDT Apple never gets around to addressing every new addition or change that it's making to iOS during the WWDC keynote; there's just not enough time. Sometimes the company will list a whole bunch of them on a big slide after software VP Craig Federighi goes over the big ones onstage. But that didn't happen today. Luckily, Apple has posted a pretty comprehensive website of everything new in iOS 12. I'm gonna run through some of the cool, smaller features that didn't get any stage time. Smoother animations Federighi mentioned things like apps launching faster, the camera opening quicker, and the keyboard popping up more swiftly, but Apple claims that in general, iOS 12 has speedier animations. "When you do things like bring up Control Center,... |
Apple just took a shot at Facebook’s web-tracking empire Posted: 04 Jun 2018 02:41 PM PDT For years, Facebook's sneakiest data-collector has been the "Like" button. Any site that wants Facebook traffic needs one, which means they're just about everywhere. And in order to work right, the button needs to log you in — which is to say, it needs to know who you are. How else would Facebook know who liked the post? Even if you don't click, Facebook registers that you loaded the button, which means they get a map of every Like-enabled site you've been to, just the kind of data that advertisers will pay to target against. Today at WWDC, Apple took a direct shot at that system and Facebook itself. Onstage, Apple's VP of software Craig Federighi described Safari's new anti-tracking features in unusually confrontational terms. |
BlackBerry Key2 leaks just days before announcement Posted: 04 Jun 2018 02:38 PM PDT The next BlackBerry phone is supposed to be announced later this week, but thanks to VentureBeat reporter Evan Blass, we're getting an early look at it. The new phone is called the BlackBerry Key2, and leaked images make it look like a refined version of the KeyOne, with a subdued gray and black appearance, fewer conspicuous holes and sensors, and perhaps even a slightly more spacious keyboard layout. The keyboard is, of course, the highlight of this device. While modern BlackBerry phones come with additional security features that harken back to BlackBerry's legacy, they're otherwise pretty generic Android phones that really only stand out thanks to the BlackBerry name. (And they're not even built by BlackBerry, but by TCL.)

Google Lens is now available as a standalone app Posted: 04 Jun 2018 02:00 PM PDT Google has released a standalone Lens app in Google Play so now you can have yet another way to access the feature if your Android device doesn't currently offer it. The Lens app has the same functionality as Google Lens does elsewhere: it uses artificial intelligence to deliver information about captured images, such as of clothes, books, and buildings. Once you open the app, it brings you to a viewfinder where Lens looks to identify nearby objects. Even though you can download it, the Lens app does not seem to be compatible with all Android devices. For example, it will work with Samsung Note 8, but not with the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. Other users have reported the app not working on Moto Z Play, Nokia 7 Plus, and the Xiaomi Mi A1. On... |
The 6 biggest highlights from Apple WWDC 2018 Posted: 04 Jun 2018 12:38 PM PDT Apple kickstarted its annual WWDC event today with a keynote led by CEO Tim Cook, where he introduced all the latest updates for iOS 12 and the new macOS. The keynote this year comes off of a quieter season for Apple. The company just had a press event back in March for its educational iPad launch in the midst of strong iPhone sales but unfavorable news cycles around HomePods leaving ring marks on wooden tables, defective MacBook Pro keyboards, and the fallout since confirming that it throttled iPhone speeds for depreciating batteries. Starting today, the company hopes to set a new tone for the year. Here are some of the highlights. iOS 12 gets in on Time Well SpentAs Craig Federighi puts it, the next unsurprising update to your Apple... |
Apple is redesigning the Mac App Store in macOS Mojave Posted: 04 Jun 2018 12:14 PM PDT Apple is finally overhauling the Mac App Store in macOS 10.14 Mojave, featuring an all-new design inspired by the similarly redesigned App Store introduced on iOS 11. The new design has a central Discover feed just like on iOS, with featured stories on curated apps selected by Apple and with rich content and autoplay videos. Apple is also sorting out new Create, Work, Play, and Develop categories showcasing featured applications under those headings (similar to how iOS breaks out Games into its own section). Product pages have also been redesigned, with new video previews here and more prominent reviews. The new Mac App Store is also getting some new applications from some big names, with Microsoft's Office 365, Adobe's Lightroom CC,... |
