Instagram might soon let you post videos up to an hour long

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 05:00 PM PDT

Instagram is considering doing away with video length constraints, according to The Wall Street Journal, which tonight published a report about "a new feature" that would let users post long-form clips of up to an hour. That would open new creative flexibility for users and bring Instagram closer in line with YouTube and its own parent company, Facebook. The plan is described as tentative, so Instagram could ultimately decide against radically extending the maximum running time of videos on its platform.

The new feature "will focus on vertical video" according to the Journal. Instagram Stories are already designed around that tall, vertical video format, and the report doesn't clarify whether longer videos would be allowed only in that...

Now Jared Leto’s Joker is apparently getting his own movie, too

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 04:13 PM PDT

In 2017, Warner Bros. and DC revealed that they were developing a Joker origin-story movie that would be entirely separate from Jared Leto's portrayal of the character in 2016's little-loved Suicide Squad. It appears that approach wasn't confusing enough, because Variety reports that the studio is now pursuing another standalone Joker film — only this one will star Leto in the title role.

According to the report, the actor will star in and executive produce the film, which is said to be "paving the way" for additional Suicide Squad spin-offs. Warner Bros. had a film focused on Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in development before Suicide Squad even landed in theaters, but the Joker news suggests that the studio's efforts to turn Squad into...

Apple’s AirPods will get a helpful new feature in iOS 12 for people who are hard of hearing

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 03:44 PM PDT

One of Apple's most thoughtful accessibility features on iOS is Live Listen. The feature gives someone using a hearing aid a way to stream audio picked up by an iPhone's microphone to the device in their ear — so long as the hearing aid is compatible with the Made for iPhone specification. Now, slated to arrive with iOS 12 come September, Live Listen will work with Apple's own AirPods, so users who are hard of hearing can stream microphone audio from an iPhone directly to the wireless earbuds. TechCrunch first reported on the new feature earlier today.

The AirPods inclusion for Live Listen is great for those who have suffered some form of mild hearing loss or typically just have trouble hearing, but do not use a professional-grade...

Tesla is planning to offer a free trial for Autopilot

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 03:34 PM PDT

Tesla owners without Autopilot may get an unexpected chance to try out the company's self-driving system. At a shareholder meeting today, Elon Musk announced plans for a free trial of Autopilot to be released "within the next couple months." He did not elaborate on terms or length of the trial. Enhanced Autopilot costs an additional $5,000 at purchase in the current generation of Teslas, or an additional $1,000 if it's purchased after the car itself.

Tesla's Autopilot is still under active development, and Musk promised significant improvements in a new version to be rolled out to drivers this month, with even more significant updates in the months to come. "The reliability and capability of Autopilot will increase exponentially over the...

Tesla is making 3,500 Model 3 vehicles a week, Elon Musk says

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 03:04 PM PDT

Tesla is producing 500 Model 3 vehicles a day, or an average 3,500 cars a week, Elon Musk said during the company's annual shareholder meeting Tuesday. That puts Tesla on track to hit the crucial 5,000-per-week goal by the end of the June, he added.

In early April, Tesla announced that it had officially missed its goal of making 2,500 Model 3 vehicles a week by the end of the first financial quarter of this year. It started the second quarter making just 2,000 Model 3s per week. Tesla has blamed bottlenecks in the production of the Model 3's batteries at the company's Gigafactory for the delays.

During the shareholder meeting, Musk acknowledged the toll its taken...

NASA’s New Horizons probe woke up today to prep for its next deep space flyby

An artistic rendering of NASA's New Horizons spacecraft

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, which flew by Pluto in July of 2015, woke up today from hibernation mode in preparation for its next rendezvous with a space rock at the edge of the Solar System. The vehicle came out of its slumber 3.7 billion miles from Earth, as it's speeding toward an icy body nicknamed Ultima Thule that orbits the Sun way beyond Neptune. Now that the spacecraft is awake, the mission team has a very full schedule through 2018: the flyby will take place on January 1st, 2019.

New Horizons has been in and out of hibernation mode twice since April of 2017. While in hibernation, the spacecraft basically runs on autopilot, with only its essential components and a few of its instruments powered on. The probe also works off a...

Netflix’s secret requests page may not be useful, but it’s fun

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 02:43 PM PDT

Apparently Netflix takes requests. This is something users might already know if they've spent enough time digging around on the streaming site's somewhat unpublicized Help Center, maybe looking for troubleshooting tips or just a place to complain. But most people apparently aren't aware of the "request a title" form, at least according to comedian Chelsea Peretti. Recently, a fan in the Philippines tweeted the official Netflix Philippines account to object because Peretti's 2014 comedy special One of the Greats wasn't available on the service. The Netflix account directed him to the form:

Peretti had her own opinion on whether the original...

Amazon’s Grand Challenge is a secret lab working on cancer research

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 01:18 PM PDT

Amazon has spun up a secret lab within its Seattle headquarters called Grand Challenge that the company has set to work on ideas as bold as curing cancer, according to a new report from CNBC. Grand Challenge is run by former Google employee and Google Glass creator Babak Parviz, and it's designed much like the original Google X moonshots lab, now a subsidiary of Alphabet and known simply as X.

Parviz and his team were part of a larger organization at Google that worked on wearable computing as well as the self-driving car unit now known as Waymo and the artificial intelligence division that became Google Brain. Amazon has its sights set on similarly bold technologies. According to the report, Grand Challenge is also known internally as...

Apple revises App Store rules after rejecting Valve’s game streaming Steam Link app

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 11:35 AM PDT

Apple quietly updated its App Store guidelines on Monday, while the keynote address of WWDC was happening in San Jose, to allow for mobile apps like Valve's Steam Link game streaming service, according to Reuters. Steam owner Valve said last week Apple had initially rejected Steam Link, which lets consumers access and stream their PC game library onto a mobile device, due to apparent "business" conflicts.

The change does not void Apple's long-standing policy that no iOS app may host an app store of its own and allow users to purchase and download software not approved through its own marketplace. Apple does that because it likes to keep tight control over the type of content allowed on iOS devices, and also because it has since the...
