HTC’s blockchain-powered Exodus smartphone is a risky bet that needs to pay off Posted: 10 Jul 2018 06:00 PM PDT ![]() In May, HTC first announced that it was working on a blockchain-powered smartphone called the Exodus. The news came as one of the company's more intriguing projects after a poor start to the year. Last year, HTC shipped over 2 million products in Q1. This year, it shipped only 630,000 products in Q1, according to numbers from IDC. HTC is in pretty poor shape after a round of layoffs last week where the company laid off 1,500 employees in Taiwan in hopes of becoming profitable. Sales in June were down 68 percent, according to the company. Its latest flagship, the U12 Plus, has received largely negative reviews over its odd solid-state buttons and software bugs. It's a less than stellar time for blockchain, as well. Cryptocurrency prices... |
A hacker was caught selling a stolen Air Force drone manual for $200 on the dark web Posted: 10 Jul 2018 05:20 PM PDT ![]() Hackers love to sell phone numbers, passports, and other personally identifiable information on the deep web, but last month one person was looking to make a quick buck off of a few military maintenance manuals. On June 1st, Recorded Future's Insikt Group discovered someone attempting to sell military documents on the deep and dark web. The person had recently registered an account on a hacking forum and published screenshots of what he had dug up. Through weeks of investigation, analysts were able to determine that the documents were authentic and the hacker had obtained them by gaining access to a Netgear router located at the Creech Air Force Base through a previously disclosed FTP vulnerability. In 2016, cybersecurity researchers... |
Joaquin Phoenix’s standalone Joker movie is actually happening Posted: 10 Jul 2018 04:34 PM PDT ![]() For those that weren't already confused by Warner Bros. and DC's superhero movie strategy, the studio is turning things up a notch. It's moving forward with a standalone film based around the Joker, which will star Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic villain. The as-of-yet untitled film will be directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover, War Dogs), and will reportedly start shooting this September. "But wait," you may be asking yourself, "wasn't there recently news that Jared Leto was getting his own Joker movie?" Yes, in fact, there was! But you see, this is a different Joker movie, one that will reportedly be released under a different DC label than the studio's flagship superhero movies like Justice League and Wonder Woman. Part of the idea... |
Tesla opens up Model 3 orders to all of North America Posted: 10 Jul 2018 04:08 PM PDT ![]() If you live in the US or Canada, you no longer need a reservation to order your own Tesla Model 3 sedan. Just go to the company's website, and you can begin the process. That's assuming you want a Model 3 with the long-range battery, which starts at $49,000. The long-promised $35,000 base model will be "available in 6 to 9 months," according to Tesla's site. It used to be you had to drop $1,000 just to reach Tesla's online design studio. For two years, that deposit was required to hold a spot as you considered pricing and options. Though the company hasn't disclosed exactly how many would-be car owners paid that fee, as of July 2, there were 420,000 reserved Model 3s, according to a Tesla SEC filing. The company has already delivered... |
Google now refers to its different Assistant voices using colors Posted: 10 Jul 2018 03:22 PM PDT ![]() Google is issuing an update to its Assistant service and mobile app today that will assign colors to its various artificial intelligence voice options. The change will be rolling out starting today and continue through the week, for users in the US using the English language option. Whatever voice option a user is currently using will be given a color, and the colors have been randomly selected by Google so as not to associate any one color with a certain gender or intonation. Prior to the change, Google simply listed its eight available voices as "Voice 1" and "Voice 2" and so on, and alternated between male and female-sounding voices as you tap through the list. Now, the company will assign a color to each one you can scroll through... |
UK issues Facebook maximum fine over Cambridge Analytica Posted: 10 Jul 2018 03:11 PM PDT ![]() United Kingdom regulators slapped Facebook with the maximum possible fine over this year's Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal, several outlets reported Tuesday. The Washington Post was among those reporting that Facebook would have to pay £500,000, or about $664,000, after data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica improperly obtained information about millions of users and used it in an effort to sway the 2016 US presidential election. The UK Information Commissioner's office found that Facebook lacked sufficient privacy protections and failed to catch warning signs that Cambridge Analytica was misusing people's data, the Post reported. In addition to the US election, Cambridge Analytica also worked on the successful Brexit... |
Aerospace startup Rocket Lab says it’s going to build a second launch site in the US Posted: 10 Jul 2018 02:40 PM PDT ![]() Small satellite launch company Rocket Lab says it's looking to expand its spaceflight operations by creating a new launch pad in the United States. This new site will be the second one for the US-based startup, which already launches its rockets from a private pad in New Zealand. Rocket Lab hasn't picked a location for the second launch site yet, but has narrowed it down to four places, all at government-run launch facilities. These include the US's two most prolific spaceports, Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The other two sites include Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, as well as the Pacific Spaceport Complex in southern Alaska. Rocket Lab says a final decision will be made in 2018. First, the... |

The FCC wants to charge you $225 to review your complaints Posted: 10 Jul 2018 01:43 PM PDT ![]() On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission will be voting to ensure they won't have to read your complaints anymore — and Democratic House members are not happy about it. Two high-ranking Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter addressed to the Commission's chairman Ajit Pai earlier today to voice their disapproval of a proposed rule that, if approved, would send informal consumer complaints directly through to the company in question. "At a time when consumers are highly dissatisfied with their communications companies, this abrupt change in policy troubles us," the congressmen wrote. If the consumer isn't happy with the outcome of the informal complaint, their only other option would be filing a formal... |
