Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles is headed to Hulu Posted: 17 Jul 2018 04:28 PM PDT Hulu has picked up an adaptation of Anne Rice's lengthy Vampire Chronicles series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The classic gothic literature series will join the streaming service's catalog of original content, which includes adaptations of The Handmaid's Tale and the Stephen King-inspired series Castle Rock, which debuts July 25th. Paramount TV optioned the entire 11-book series in 2017, with Rice and her son Christopher attached as a writers and executive producers. Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods showrunner Bryan Fuller was attached to the project earlier this year, but has since dropped out to "step back from the project rather than step on the toes of [his] longtime friends," according to THR. |
Instagram will upgrade two-factor authentication to guard against SIM hacking Posted: 17 Jul 2018 03:49 PM PDT Instagram is working on a two-factor authentication solution that would not require a user's phone number, according to a report from TechCrunch. Instagram has confirmed that it's working on the more secure method, just hours after a prominent Motherboard investigation on SIM hacking was published earlier today. Like other social media platforms, the upcoming option will let you authenticate with code-generating apps like Google Authenticator and Authy. Though Instagram's confirmation was likely prompted by the investigation, it appears that the company has been working on moving beyond phone numbers for some time. Engineer and tipster Jane Manchun Wong discovered a prototype version of the updated two-factor feature in the Android... |
Twitter says it doesn’t ‘have the bandwidth’ to fix verification right now Posted: 17 Jul 2018 03:33 PM PDT Twitter doesn't presently "have the bandwidth" to overhaul its verification system, the company's new head of product announced today. This comes despite Twitter's continued acknowledgement that it must bring transparency and a clear process to verification and the blue checkmark, which has been stamped on accounts belonging to an erratic mix of world leaders, celebrities, athletes, business executives, journalists, and also alt-right nationalists. The company maintains that verification is fundamentally intended to confirm an account's authenticity — not signal any sort of endorsement. But a lack of any real rhyme or reason to the verification system has made it easy to conflate the two. Back in March, CEO Jack Dorsey envisioned a... |
The next generation of VR headsets will connect over a single USB-C cable Posted: 17 Jul 2018 03:27 PM PDT VirtualLink, a consortium of companies including AMD, NVIDIA, Oculus, Valve, and Microsoft, has just announced that the oodles of cables needed to connect VR headsets to PCs will soon be whittled down to a single USB-C connection. The new open industry standard is a big improvement on the system of multiple USBs and HDMIs that people use now to hook up devices like the Oculus Rift to their PC. Not only will this cut down on clutter, but it will also bring PC-based VR to more people. Right now, these devices are limited to people using computers that can support multiple connectors. By using the new VirtualLink standard, VR can be bright to smaller devices — like light notebooks, tablets and... |
Nest CEO steps down as division is brought under the Google Home team Posted: 17 Jul 2018 03:21 PM PDT Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz is stepping down as the smart home gadget maker is reshuffled yet again, now operating under the Google division responsible for the company's Home smart speakers, according to a report from CNET. Just five months ago, Fawaz oversaw Nest's reintegration under Google; for the last three years, Nest operated as an independent entity under Google parent company Alphabet. The decision to bring Nest back under the Google umbrella was designed to help hardware chief Rick Osterloh better integrate Nest products with Google's own hardware and software, much of it increasingly driven by artificial intelligence advances. Now, Fawaz is taking on an advisory role, and Nest will be overseen by Rishi Chandra, the vice president... |
The US government has trouble keeping track of radioactive material Posted: 17 Jul 2018 02:38 PM PDT In March 2017, thieves made off with radiation detectors and small disks of radioactive plutonium and cesium that were stashed in the back of a rental car, the Center for Public Integrity reported on Monday. The gear had belonged to two Idaho National Laboratory employees, who'd been sent to recover radioactive materials from a lab in Texas. The employees' tools for the mission? Radiation detectors and dime-sized disks of plutonium and cesium used to make sure the detectors were working properly. But the entire kit was stolen from their rental car when it was parked at a Marriott in San Antonio, Texas. The theft was immediately reported to law enforcement and the Department of Energy, and it didn't put the public at risk, according to a... |
Undercover Facebook moderator was instructed not to remove fringe groups or hate speech Posted: 17 Jul 2018 02:32 PM PDT An investigative journalist who went undercover as a Facebook moderator in the UK says the company lets pages from far-right fringe groups "exceed deletion threshold," and that those pages are "subject to different treatment in the same category as pages belonging to governments and news organizations." The accusation is a damning one, undermining Facebook's claims that it is actively trying to cut down on fake news, propaganda, hate speech, and other harmful content that may have significant real-world impact. The undercover journalist detailed his findings in a new documentary titled Inside Facebook: Secrets of the Social Network, that just aired on the UK's Channel 4. The investigation outlines questionable practices on behalf of CPL... |
A major election software maker allowed remote access on its systems for years Posted: 17 Jul 2018 01:59 PM PDT A major voting machine maker, Election Systems & Software, revealed in a letter to a US senator that it installed remote-access software on its machines over a period of six years. The revelation raises substantial security concerns, as reported by Motherboard, which obtained the letter. ES&S admitted in the letter sent to Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) in April that it had provided the embattled remote connection software called pcAnywhere to "a small number of customers between 2000 and 2006." In those years, ES&S was one of the top voting machine makers in the United States. The company makes systems used to manage voting booths and to tabulate the final results from those booths. In 2006, at least 60 percent of ballots cast in the US were... |
Instagram is testing feature that allows public accounts to remove followers Posted: 17 Jul 2018 01:43 PM PDT If your Instagram account is public, there's no real way to stop people from looking at your feed. Even if you block someone, your photos are just a private browser window away. That said, Instagram is at least trying to give users more direct control over their own list of followers; the company has started more widely testing the ability to manually remove followers with a few taps. Users with private accounts have long had the ability to remove followers and immediately cut off access to their own content. But an increasing number of public accounts have also gained the option to manually kick people out of their pool of followers. Reports of this new "remove follower" feature have been popping up over the last few months, and it... |
Mophie rolls out iPhone battery packs that charge by a Lightning cable Posted: 17 Jul 2018 01:39 PM PDT Mophie, a best-selling manufacturer of stylish battery cases, just announced a range of battery packs specifically built for use with different iOS devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and AirPods. Its new Powerstation battery packs all charge via Apple's Lightning connector — meaning the cord you use to charge your phone is the same one that charges the battery, cutting down on wires and making your bag a little more streamlined. Each Powerstation includes an LED power indicator and offers anywhere between 20 to 70 hours of extra battery life, depending on the power pack you choose. Broadly, the packs have two different models. The first model is a typical battery pack that powers your phone and charges via... |
