Twitter will lock your account if you change your display name to Elon Musk Posted: 24 Jul 2018 05:27 PM PDT Twitter has implemented a new method for combating cryptocurrency scammers: it now automatically locks unverified accounts that change their display name to Elon Musk. If you have a non-verified account that is not associated with a phone number, changing your display name to that of the SpaceX and Tesla CEO will result in an immediate lock out. Twitter will then ask you to pass a CAPTCHA test, as well as provide a phone number, to regain access. "As part of our continuing efforts to combat spam and malicious activity on our service, we're testing new measures to challenge accounts that use terms commonly associated with spam campaigns. We are continually refining these detections based on changes in spammy activity," a Twitter... |
Postmates expands its Walmart grocery delivery service to Los Angeles and San Diego Posted: 24 Jul 2018 03:08 PM PDT Postmates and Walmart have expanded their grocery delivery partnership to people in Los Angeles, San Diego, and other nearby areas, the company announced today. Previously the integration was available in cities like Las Vegas, Charlotte, and Oklahoma City. In keeping with how Postmates nearly always has a promo code for free delivery, it's advertising the promo code FRESHCAR for free delivery on your first order if you're in LA or San Diego. To access the feature, you can go to Walmart.com/grocery or use the mobile app on iOS or Google Play. Whatever you order will be selected and prepared by Walmart staff and then delivered to you via Postmates. Through the app, you can monitor the delivery status. It costs $9.95 and you have to meet... |
Steam is rolling out its new Discord-like chat features to all users Posted: 24 Jul 2018 03:03 PM PDT Steam has begun rolling out its new text and voice features, as well as its updated friends list, to all users beginning today. The Valve-owned video game storefront is increasingly trying to compete with popular chat app Discord, and it finally embarked on a quest to implement some popular and much-needed Discord-like features into the Steam client back in June, when it launched a beta version of its more robust Steam Chat. Now, those features look to be live as Steam tries to win back some of the Discord crowd it's lost since the latter company launched just three years ago. The new updates are mainly around design and chat versatility. Now you can share GIFs and rich social and video links with friends in Steam Chat, sort friends by... |
Vizio’s 2018 flagship P-Series Quantum TV is now available for $2,099.99 Posted: 24 Jul 2018 02:55 PM PDT It may be a little later to the party than 2018 TVs from other manufacturers, but Vizio's flagship P-Series Quantum 4K HDR TV is now available to purchase for $2,099.99. Unlike Vizio's other models, the P-Series Quantum only comes in one 65-inch size. The main difference (which Vizio charges roughly $800 more for over the 65-inch model of the standard P-Series line) is the P-Series Quantum's 2000 nits of peak brightness, or double the peak 1000 nits output of the non-Quantum model. The P-Series Quantum also offers more full-array local dimming zones (a total of 192) than the regular P-Series models, which top out at 120. It also uses a similar "quantum dot" technology that Samsung features in its QLED line for... |
Delta and American Airlines say they won’t make their coach seats tighter Posted: 24 Jul 2018 02:48 PM PDT Anyone who's tall enough knows the struggle of trying to squish into the back of an airplane's seat — so it's a bit surprising that The Wall Street Journal managed to wrangle the CEOs of American Airlines and Delta, both six feet, three inches, into the cramped coach seats of their respective company's airplanes to talk about seating space. And while there, both CEOs said that their seats wouldn't get any tighter, though neither apologized for the scant legroom at the back of their planes. If people wanted more space, both said, then they can pay more for it. "I feel what our customers experience," American Airlines CEO Doug Parker told the Journal. The CEO claimed to ride coach about a third of the time — typically when the swankier... |
Philips accidentally leaks a new, outdoor version of its Hue LightStrip Posted: 24 Jul 2018 02:16 PM PDT Philips has a new outdoor version of its smart LightStrip in the works. Creatively dubbed the Outdoor LightStrip, the product appeared in a since deleted post from the Philip Hue Netherlands website, spotted by HomeKit News. As the name suggests, the Outdoor LightStrip is a water-resistant version of the LightStrip for use outdoors. It's still a Hue light, so you'll still be able to integrate it into your smart home setup, but with the added benefits of being able to use it outside your house. And unlike the original LightStrip, the Outdoor version has a diffuse coating instead of just the bare LEDs, so you don't have to hide it underneath a shelf or cabinet like you would the indoor version. There's also... |
General Motors wants its customers to rent their cars to other people Posted: 24 Jul 2018 02:02 PM PDT Car ownership ain't what it used to be. Despite more people buying cars than ever before, the big auto companies are experimenting with alternate ownership models under the assumption that their sales will drop in the future. The most recent example is General Motors, which announced Tuesday a new peer-to-peer car-sharing service, in which owners of GM-branded vehicles would rent their cars to other people. The service, which will be operated under the automaker's two-year-old Maven car-sharing company, has been in works for months. But it will be limited at first: car owners who live in Chicago, Detroit, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, can list and rent out their own personal cars when they aren't using them, much like Airbnb users do with... |
Facebook signs agreement saying it won’t let housing advertisers exclude users by race Posted: 24 Jul 2018 01:30 PM PDT Facebook has signed a new, legally binding agreement with the state of Washington agreeing to remove advertisers' ability to exclude races, religions, sexual orientations, and other protected classes in certain ad-targeting sectors. The announcement was made today by Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who spearheaded a 20-month investigation into the social network, which first came under fire for the practice in 2016 and again last year. "Facebook's advertising platform allowed unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, sexual orientation, disability and religion," said Ferguson in a statement. "That's wrong, illegal, and unfair." The agreement Facebook has signed gives it 90 days to comply with the required changes. The... |
A million Facebook users watched a video that blurs the line between bad satire and ‘fake news’ Posted: 24 Jul 2018 01:24 PM PDT A conservative news outlet spliced together a "satirical" interview with Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, published it on Facebook without noting it was satire, and racked up over a million views in less than 24 hours — many from people who appear convinced it's real. The video is fake, and for the people who are taking it seriously, it's news. But it's not "fake news," and it shows just how confounding talking about misinformation has gotten. Yesterday, Conservative Review network CRTV posted a video that remixed out-of-context clips of a PBS Firing Line interview with Ocasio-Cortez, alternating them with staged questions from CRTV host Allie Stuckey. In the fake interview, Ocasio-Cortez sheepishly shakes her... |
Uber’s self-driving cars are back on public roads, but under human control Posted: 24 Jul 2018 12:21 PM PDT Uber's self-driving cars are back on public roads in Pittsburgh this week, four months after a fatal crash prompted the company to shut down its testing program in North America. For now, the vehicles will not be driven in autonomous mode, but instead will be manually operated by human safety drivers while Uber continues its "top-to-bottom" review of its self-driving program. The company's fleet of Volvo XC90 SUVs have been gathering dust since March, when a self-driving Uber car struck and killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg while she was crossing the street in Tempe, Arizona. Uber immediately grounded its fleet as federal investigators began to probe what went wrong. The governor of Arizona barred the company from further testing in his... |
