Apple will exclusively use Intel modems in 2018 iPhones, according to Qualcomm Posted: 25 Jul 2018 03:40 PM PDT Apple's ongoing dispute with Qualcomm looks like it will have a big impact on the components used in this year's upcoming iPhone models, according to Qualcomm Chief Financial Officer George Davis. On an earnings call this afternoon, Davis said, "Apple intends to solely use our competitor's modems rather than our modems in its next iPhone release," as reported by CNET. Davis didn't mention Intel by name, but Intel is the only other supplier of that component for Apple's smartphones. That lines up with a report earlier this month from KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which said that Apple would ditch Qualcomm as its long-time supplier of cellular modems as a result of its legal dispute with the chipmaker. With the roll out of 4G, Apple began... |
Windows 10 now uses machine learning to stop updates installing when a PC is in use Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:57 PM PDT One of the more frustrating aspects of Windows 10 is the operating system's ability to start installing updates when you're in the middle of using it. While Microsoft has tried to address this aggressive approach to updates with features to snooze installation, Windows 10 users continue to complain that updates reboot devices when they're in use. Reacting to this feedback, Microsoft says it's aware of the issues. "We heard you, and to alleviate this pain, if you have an update pending we've updated our reboot logic to use a new system that is more adaptive and proactive," explains Microsoft's Windows Insider chief Dona Sarkar. Microsoft says it has trained a "predictive model" that will accurately predict when the best time to restart... |
Peter Thiel returns to Stanford to teach a German course on the limits of globalization Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:56 PM PDT Venture capitalist Peter Thiel has returned to teach a class at Stanford University, according to a listing spotted by Stanford graduate Andrew Granato on Twitter. Thiel is currently listed as a co-instructor for "German 270: Sovereignty and the Limits of Globalization and Technology." Thiel attended Stanford for both undergraduate and law school, and he previously taught a law course at the undergrad level in 2011. That law course covered similar topics, titled "Sovereignty, Globalization, and Technological Change." The seminar is taught out of the German department, a language Thiel speaks fluently. According to the course description, the class "explores the tensions between state and market," with readings from Marx and Nietzsche,... |
Qualcomm will pay $2 billion to end failed acquisition of NXP Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:33 PM PDT Qualcomm has finally given up on buying NXP Semiconductors, a Dutch company known for automotive and IoT chips, which it's been trying to acquire for nearly two years. The deal has long been held up by the Chinese government, and now, Qualcomm has said it will scrap the agreement altogether rather than continue the uncertain fight toward a completed acquisition. In doing so, it'll have to pay a breakup fee of $2 billion. The two companies initially entered into a deal in October 2016, with Qualcomm agreeing to pay $47 billion for NXP. The deadline to close the deal has been extended many times since then, as the companies wait for China to approve or deny the merger; every other country reviewing the acquisition granted its approval. Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:29 PM PDT Microsoft is starting to test its next major Windows 10 update. Codenamed 19H1, the update will be made available in the first half of 2019. Microsoft has started releasing public builds of 19H1 to Windows 10 testers today, with features that will also be included in the codename Redstone 5 update due in September or October. Microsoft is adding a new Mixed Reality Flashlight feature that opens a low-latency pass-through camera feed from a controller to allow users to see the real world around them during VR apps or games. Microsoft is also adding new emoji to both the Redstone 5 update and the 19H1 update that are designed to complement the 157 new additions to Unicode 11. Much like Apple's iOS 12 additions; superheroes, redheads, a... |
HBO has finally greenlit that Deadwood movie Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:46 PM PDT David Milch's Deadwood, HBO's best Western, ended 12 years ago after an impressive three-season run: while it was airing, it won eight Emmys and oodles of critical acclaim, and found a devoted audience to boot. (The show charts the development of a fictional frontier outpost in the 1870s in the very real Deadwood, South Dakota.) Since its 2006 end, those fans have been clamoring for a satisfying resolution to the series, in the form of a fourth season or as a movie. At this summer's Television Critics Association press tour, Casey Bloys, HBO's head of programming, announced that Deadwood will be coming back as a movie. Filming is expected to begin in October, Bloys said, and the network is aiming for a release next spring. The Hollywood... |
Facebook growth slows in aftermath of privacy scandals Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:44 PM PDT For years, Facebook has enjoyed astronomical growth, but that's starting to slow as the company's moderation controversies and data privacy scandals continue to pile up. Facebook posted earnings for the second quarter of 2018 today, with revenue and user growth coming in under Wall Street estimates. It's the first time the company's quarterly sales did not exceed expectations in roughly three years. Facebook's numbers were still wildly impressive for the quarter: it saw 42 percent year-over-year growth in ad revenue and 11 percent year-over-year growth in monthly and daily active users. (The social network now counts 1.47 billion daily active users and 2.23 billion monthly ones.) But this is still the slowest quarterly user growth... |
Square is helping businesses develop contracts to prevent chargebacks from their customers Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:40 PM PDT Back in mid-May, Square quietly launched a landing page for a feature that helps small business owners create contracts that protect them from buyer chargebacks and other credit card disputes. It hasn't publicly announced them yet, but in an interview, Square told The Verge why it launched these contracts, which will be promoted to business owners starting in August. Kay Feker, Square's risk program manager, noticed earlier this year that customers were increasingly asking for money back after a successful transaction. Even if they were satisfied with several home repairs, for instance, they would protest the final transaction and the business owner would have no real choice but to return their money as a result. "These days with the... |

Chris Hardwick will return to AMC next month Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:09 PM PDT Chris Hardwick will once again host AMC's The Walking Dead after show The Talking Dead and his other talk show Talking with Chris Hardwick after he was suspended from the project following allegations of sexual misconduct from his ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra. He will resume hosting duties on August 12th. In a statement, AMC said that it conducted a "comprehensive assessment," and that it believes "returning Chris to work is the appropriate step." In June, Dykstra published a post to Medium that detailed allegations of abuse at the hands of an ex-boyfriend, which was widely assumed to be Hardwick. Following the publication of the blog post, AMC suspended Hardwick from both shows and his slots as moderator at San Diego Comic-Con while it... |
