Nintendo announces Labo vehicle kit with cardboard car, submarine, and plane

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 06:41 PM PDT

Nintendo has announced its first new Labo kit since the original DIY cardboard Switch accessories launched in April. The new package is called the Vehicle Kit, and lets you build controls for a car, a submarine, and a plane.

The game is played on the TV screen, and you can switch between each vehicle at will by putting a Joy-Con "key" into their controls. There's also an acceleration pedal that works with all three vehicles.

This isn't the first Labo kit to simulate a vehicle; the first Variety Kit included a motorbike handlebar that later gained Mario Kart 8 Deluxe compatibility.

The Vehicle Kit will be available on September 14th for $69.99.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot showrunner clarifies: it’s not a reboot

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:01 PM PDT

"Reboot" has become a contentious word. While risk-averse producers are perpetually looking for familiar films and TV to bring back in new forms, with the expectation that the new versions will have a built-in fandom, the seemingly endless wave of lackluster reboots of popular properties seems to be taking a toll on fans.

And every new reboot announcement sparks a wave of online backlash. One of the most recent kerfuffles involved the announcement that Midnight, Texas creator Monica Owusu-Breen was working with Joss Whedon on a new version of his signature show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Initial reports suggested their new show would be a reboot, with a woman of color in the title role.

Idaho prison inmates exploited tablet vulnerability to steal $225,000 in credits

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 04:12 PM PDT

A group of 364 prison inmates housed across a series of Idaho corrections facilities collectively stole nearly $225,000 worth of digital credits by exploiting a vulnerability in tablets provided by a company called JPay, according to the Associated Press. JPay is a private company that provides digital services like email, music, games, and money transfer to prison inmates.

JPay provides inmates with access to the outside world, and prisons often adopt its services to help with rehabilitation and education. It does not appear to use taxpayer money to fund any of its services, nor does any of its revenue from digital sales typically go to the state. Instead, JPay will either let family members or friends of inmates purchase the tablet for...

It’s time for America to get more animal-themed transit

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:47 PM PDT

China's just began testing its first ever "sky-train" earlier this week. The suspension railway is currently zipping around on a monorail track in a province in Southern China, reaching speeds of up to 60 km / hr (about 37 mph). When it launches, the train will be battery-powered, entirely autonomous, and capable of carrying 200 people.

It also looks like a giant panda — if the panda was a little square.

This isn't the first time that East Asia has launched some kind of public transit that's on the cute and fuzzy side. We've also seen Hello...

Google bans cryptocurrency mining apps from the Play Store

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:32 PM PDT

Google has updated its Play Store developer policies to ban several more categories of apps, including cryptocurrency mining ones and apps with disruptive ads, as reported by Android Police.

When it comes to cryptocurrency apps, Google says mining apps are now prohibited, but apps that "remotely manage the mining of cryptocurrency" are still permitted. Apple recently banned apps that mine cryptocurrency, stating that, "the only cryptocurrency mining apps allowed are those that mine outside of the device, like cloud-based mining."

Repetitive apps are now prohibited in the Google Play store. These are apps that mimic or provide the same experience as apps that already exist on the platform. Apps can be removed if they copy content from...

Amazon’s hugely profitable quarter pushes it toward a $1 trillion valuation

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:06 PM PDT

Amazon reported earnings for the second quarter of 2018 today, posting an even higher profit than Wall Street analysts estimated thanks in large part to boosts in North American operating income, its highly profitable cloud computing business, and booming sales in its growing ad division. Amazon reported earnings per share of $5.07, more than double of analysts' estimation of $2.50.

That equates to a quarterly profit of $2.5 billion, Amazon's highest ever and a staggering 1,200 percent increase from this time a year ago, when the company posted a profit of only $197 million. This is the third consecutive quarter Amazon has posted profit of more than $1 billion, and the first time it has ever broken $2 billion. Helping its numbers is...

Fortnite for Android might be exclusive to the Galaxy Note 9 at launch

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:57 PM PDT

Samsung might be taking its marketing of the Galaxy Note 9 in a different direction than previous Notes: the company is said to be planning a huge, exclusive Fortnite push through a partnership with Epic Games. Both 9to5Google and XDA Developers are reporting that Fortnite's Android port will launch alongside the Note 9 — perhaps even as a pre-bundled application. Samsung might have a 30-day exclusive on the hugely popular battle royale game, according to 9to5Google.

Epic Games did not respond to a request for comment.

Both sites say that Note 9 buyers will be rewarded with some Fortnite bonus freebies in exchange for preordering the phone, including complimentary V-Bucks, player skins, and more. And yes, apparently somehow Samsung has...

Slack buys HipChat with plans to shut it down and migrate users to its chat service

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:45 PM PDT

Slack made a surprise announcement today that it's acquired HipChat, once a primary competitor to its workplace chat service, from enterprise software giant Atlassian. As part of the partnership between Slack and Atlassian, HipChat will be shutting down and the two companies will work together to migrate all of its users over to Slack. The same goes for Stride, the chat and collaboration successor to HipChat that Atlassian launched last year.

Atlassian clarified that Slack is only buying the intellectual property behind the two products, and that the two companies will be working on future integrations together.

In exchange, Atlassian gets a small stake in the startup, while Slack pays an undisclosed amount over the next three years to...

Big automakers are breaking themselves apart to compete with Silicon Valley

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:30 PM PDT

Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, is splitting itself up into three companies in order to make itself "fit for the future," the automaker announced today. Mercedes-Benz, Daimler's truck division, and Daimler's mobility division will all become independent entities as a result of the effort (which Daimler AG is calling, in all caps, "PROJECT FUTURE").

Under the reorganization, Mercedes-Benz vans and cars will be rolled into Mercedes-Benz AG. Daimler's commercial bus and truck operations will exist together as Daimler Truck AG. And Daimler's mobility operation will merge with its financial services division to form Daimler Mobility AG. All three operations will still sit under Daimler AG.

Costco is already selling the brand-new Lenovo Smart Display for $50 off

Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:30 PM PDT

The Lenovo Smart Display with Google Assistant goes on sale July 27th, but the 10-inch model (with the nicer bamboo rear finish) is already $50 off for Costco members, bringing the price down to $199. This not only puts it at the same cost as the eight-inch model, but it's also $30 cheaper than its main rival: the Amazon Echo Show.

You should definitely read our review to get a sense of whether a Smart Display would be a good purchase. This is just the first of them, but it's already very clear that having Google Assistant on a screen is pretty great in a variety of settings. You can pull up YouTube videos or step-by-step recipes in the kitchen or use it as a small screen for YouTube TV.

Its screen works well in all lighting...
