The future of search-and-rescue robots might be centaur, not human Posted: 28 Jul 2018 10:00 AM PDT What has six legs, four wheels, and two karate-chopping hands? Why, it's Centauro — a new search-and-rescue robot built by researchers from the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. Centauro is the latest experiment by scientists to find the most adaptable and useful body-shape for robots designed to help in disasters. Usually, these machines are built like humans, with two arms and two legs, but researchers are increasingly finding that hybrid designs offer more flexibility. With its four wheeled legs, Centauro is more stable than a humanoid bot, but still retains the two forward-facing arms needed for manipulating objects like tools and doors. (Or, as in the video below, karate-chopping some plywood for fun.) |
Using the internet without the Amazon Cloud Posted: 28 Jul 2018 10:00 AM PDT Amazon servers make up so much of the internet that it can be hard to separate the two. As of last year, Amazon Web Services controlled roughly 40 percent of the cloud market, running the backend for Netflix, Pinterest, Slack and dozens of other services with no visible connection to the company. Because the Amazon partnership is rarely explicit, AWS becomes a kind of invisible infrastructure, like water mains, submarine cables, or any of the other hidden pipes we rely on without seeing. When AWS starts to fail — like it did in March and again earlier this month — it can seem like the entire internet is collapsing. Unless you know which services in particular are running on AWS servers, you won't know difference between an cloud failure... |
A new report claims that the next iPad Pros might shrink and lose their headphone jacks Posted: 28 Jul 2018 09:35 AM PDT A new report from Japanese supply chain site Macotakara (via 9to5Mac) suggests that Apple could be refreshing its line of iPad Pro models by shrinking them down a bit, and eliminating the 3.5mm headphone jack, much like recent iPhone models. The site notes that it's possible that next year's lineup could see their dimensions shrink a bit — the 10.5 inch models could be 247.5 mm high, 178.7 mm wide, and 6 mm thick (it's currently 250.6 mm high, 174.1 mm tall and 6.1 mm thick), while the 12.9 inch models might come in at 280 mm tall, 215 mm wide and 6.4 mm thick (which is currently at 305.7 mm tall, 220.6mm wide, and 6.9 mm thick.) The report also suggests that the iPad will come... |
Twitter says that it will begin suspending repeatedly abusive Periscope commenters Posted: 28 Jul 2018 09:00 AM PDT Twitter says that it will launch "more aggressive enforcement of our guidelines related to chats sent during live broadcasts," for Periscope beginning on August 10th. It will begin to "review and suspend accounts" that continually send abusive comments in chats during live broadcasts in an effort to crack down on abusive users. Like many social media platforms, Twitter and Periscope have been forced to reckon with abusive behavior. In recent months, Twitter has unveiled a number of new steps to cut down on bad behavior, banning bots and accounts, and making its expectations and rules clearer to users. Periscope has taken some steps on its own as well — it issued updates that pulls together "flash juries" to evaluate comments a couple of... |
9 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 28 Jul 2018 09:00 AM PDT I finally caught the first Deadpool earlier this week on a plane back from Florida. I was worried they'd end up censoring a bunch of the movie, but it seems like most of the film made it through, with just a couple of blurred butts. I've realized more and more lately that I think self-aware action films, which are able to play off the genre's conventions, are often way more more fun and interesting than serious ones. Deadpool reminded me a lot of the two Kingsman films; they're far from all-out comedies, but they know where to wink and nod in ways that move the story along and turn otherwise tired archetypes into entertaining roles. To a degree, that's something Marvel has tapped into well, too. Its films are serious, but they're never t... |
A new teaser for Netflix’s Iron Fist teases an iconic costume Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:23 AM PDT At San Diego Comic-Con last week, Marvel announced that the second season of Iron Fist will begin streaming on Netflix on September 7th. Netflix released a new teaser for the season today, hinting that we'll get to see a bit more of Danny Rand's past — and the classic costume his character is known for. The teaser shows off Rand (Finn Jones) walking down a street in New York City with Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick), which dredges up old memories of his time at K'un-L'un: a brutal fight. When Wing if everything's okay, he replies that he just had a bad memory, to which she says that it's in the past. "I hope so," he tells her. The scene hints that Rand's past will come back to haunt him in this upcoming season, and does something else:... |

Americans feel positively toward medical marijuana, but the research isn’t there yet Posted: 28 Jul 2018 06:00 AM PDT Americans have favorable beliefs about medical marijuana that aren't yet supported by the scientific research, according to a new study from the Annuals of Internal Medicine. Medical marijuana, and cannabis more broadly, is growing in popularity and approval. Business is booming (especially in California) and the US Food and Drug Administration just approved the first cannabis-derived drug. For the study, the authors surveyed about 16,000 Americans about their attitudes toward marijuana. Their results showed that 81 percent of the respondents believed that marijuana had at least one medical benefit, in areas such as pain management, treating diseases, and alleviating mental health problems. But, as the... |
How conspiracy sites keep outsmarting big tech companies Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:00 AM PDT Two weeks ago, CNN's Oliver Darcy put a question to Facebook executives during an event in New York: how can Facebook say it's serious about fighting misinformation while also allowing the notorious conspiracy site Infowars to host a page there, where it has collected nearly 1 million followers? The tension Darcy identified wasn't new. But it crystallized the a contradiction at the heart of Facebook's efforts to clean up its platform. And we've been talking about it ever since. Late Thursday night, Facebook took its first enforcement action against Jones since the current debate started. The company removed four videos that were posted to the pages of Alex Jones, Infowars' founder and chief personality, and Infowars itself. Jones, who... |
