Trump’s Supreme Court nominee decided against net neutrality and for NSA surveillance Posted: 09 Jul 2018 06:11 PM PDT ![]() After intense speculation, President Trump said today that he has selected Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee to succeed retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. In his announcement, the president introduced his nominee as a jurist with "impeccable credentials" and as "a judge's judge." Kavanaugh, who was nominated to the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit by George W. Bush, where he currently serves, certainly has a notable, if likely controversial, record on tech policy issues. While it's difficult to anticipate exactly which issues might come before the court, his past rulings suggest a reliably conservative voice on tech. His addition to the highest court in the country could vastly reshape the digital landscape. |
Microsoft’s Surface Go tablet has a 10-inch screen and starts at $399 Posted: 09 Jul 2018 06:00 PM PDT ![]() Microsoft is getting back into the cheaper tablet game today with the new Surface Go, a smaller, less powerful take on the popular Surface Pro device. The Go features a 10-inch screen, integrated kickstand, Windows 10, and a similar design to the Surface Pro, and starts at $399. It is available for preorder starting July 10th and will ship in August. The Surface Go doesn't change Microsoft's Surface design philosophy one bit — it really just looks like a smaller version of the Surface Pro design that's been around since 2014's Surface Pro 3. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio display (1800 x 1200 pixel resolution), the signature built-in kickstand with unlimited positions, a front-facing camera with facial recognition login, and Microsoft's... |
Star Wars: Episode IX will reportedly feature Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian Posted: 09 Jul 2018 05:22 PM PDT ![]() Last week word broke the J.J. Abrams had cast The Americans' Keri Russell in his upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX. According to The Hollywood Reporter, another actor has joined the project, as well: Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. Williams originally joined the franchise back in 1980, in The Empire Strikes Back. Calrissian, a smuggler and friend of Harrison Ford's Han Solo, quickly became a fan favorite. The character was recently brought back to the screen in a younger iteration by Donald Glover in Solo: A Star Wars Story. That movie left the door open for its own sequels, and potentially even a Glover-led Lando spin-off. However, Solo failed to meet box-office expectations, with Lucasfilm reportedly deciding to put development on... |
This video of a Greenland glacier fracturing is a close, scary look at sea level rise Posted: 09 Jul 2018 05:18 PM PDT ![]() In just 30 minutes at the end of June, four-and-a-half miles of icebergs fractured off of Greenland's Helheim glacier in an icy churn. Researchers managed to catch it on camera, and they've released a sped-up video that condenses the violence of the ice-shattering event into a little over 90 seconds. The Helheim glacier dips into the ocean in eastern Greenland, and the first ice chunk to break off was wide and shallow, "like a pancake," says David Holland, an NYU professor who led the expedition to Greenland. Then came the pinnacle icebergs — tall spikes of ice that toppled and turned. "Every conceivable type of iceberg was produced," Holland says. All told, a section of the glacier as big as lower and midtown Manhattan combined broke... |
YouTube is fighting conspiracy theories with ‘authoritative’ context and outside links Posted: 09 Jul 2018 04:09 PM PDT ![]() YouTube is adding "authoritative" context to search results about conspiracy-prone topics like the Moon landing and the Oklahoma City Bombing, as well as putting $25 million toward news outlets producing videos. Today, the company announced a new step in its Google News Initiative, a program it launched in March. The update is focused on reducing misinformation on YouTube, including the conspiracy theories that have flourished after events like the Parkland shooting. This update includes new features for breaking news updates and long-standing conspiracy theories. YouTube is implementing a change it announced in March, annotating conspiracy-related pages with text from "trusted sources like Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica." And in... |
Apple’s iOS passcode cracking defense can be bypassed using a USB accessory Posted: 09 Jul 2018 03:39 PM PDT ![]() Apple released iOS 11.4.1 this morning, and with it came a new software mechanism that blocks passcode cracking tools favored by law enforcement. Called USB Restricted Mode, the tool renders the iPhone unaccessible to third-party software of any kind after its screen has been locked for one hour. That way, malicious third parties or law enforcement agencies can't break into the phone using passcode cracking tools like GrayKey. However, researchers at cybersecurity firm ElcomSoft have found a loophole that resets the one-hour counter so long as you plug a USB accessory into the iPhone's Lightning port, regardless of whether the phone has ever connected to that accessory in the past. Here's ElcomSoft's Oleg Afonin explaining the... |
Reddit CEO says it’s ‘impossible’ to consistently enforce hate speech rules Posted: 09 Jul 2018 03:29 PM PDT ![]() A private chat thread released this weekend reveals that banning hate speech on Reddit is apparently too difficult a job to even attempt. The news, first spotted by the Huffington Post, comes from a leaked conversation between Reddit CEO Steve Huffman and Reddit user Zachary Swanson, known as "whatllmyusernamebe" on the site. Swanson asked Huffman to reconsider his permissive stance on hate speech on the site, pointing out that Reddit's rules already ban "violent" speech, which the site defines as "content that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual or a group of people." In response, Huffman argued that hate speech is "difficult to... |
House Republicans demand answers from Alphabet following Gmail privacy scandal Posted: 09 Jul 2018 03:16 PM PDT ![]() Last week, reports surfaced confirming that third-party app developers were capable of reading emails belonging to millions of Gmail accounts. Today, Congress is demanding Google supply answers to a variety of privacy-related questions following the scandal. Top Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent letters to both Apple and Alphabet today that asked a slew of questions regarding privacy issues. The most targeted questions were aimed at Alphabet's CEO, Larry Page, regarding last week's report in The Wall Street Journal, but also extended to issues like audio collection and location tracking. The committee pointed out that even though Google announced last year... |
Facebook abandoned helicopter drone project months after first demo Posted: 09 Jul 2018 02:59 PM PDT ![]() The Aquila drone isn't the only aerial internet project Facebook abandoned in the last year. The Tether-tenna, a small helicopter drone that could temporarily replace cellular service in emergency situations, was discontinued a few months after being shown off at the F8 developer conference in May of 2017, the company has confirmed to The Verge. "Tether-tenna was a proof of concept project we were evaluating when we discussed it at F8 in early 2017," a spokesperson for Facebook said. "It wasn't something we pursued further as we chose to focus our efforts on continued development and advancement of our Terragraph, millimeter-wave, and HAPS [high altitude platform station] programs. We engage in a number of proof of concept initiatives... |
A Russian cargo ship will try to break the record for fastest trip to the space station Posted: 09 Jul 2018 02:18 PM PDT ![]() This afternoon, Russia is launching an otherwise routine cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station — except this vehicle's trip is meant to be the speediest trip to the ISS ever. Following its launch, the spacecraft, known as Progress, is supposed to rendezvous with the ISS within just a little under four hours. That's a speedy jaunt compared to other cargo and crew spacecraft, which can take between six hours and two days to reach the ISS after launch. However, it's possible the quick journey may not happen. The Progress has to launch at a very specific time to get to the ISS in under four hours. Otherwise, it will have to take a much longer route to its final destination. |
