Apple’s plans to cut apps out of its affiliate program may shut down independent iOS news sites Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:28 PM PDT Today, Apple announced that it plans to remove apps and in-app purchases from its iTunes Affiliate Program by October 1st. The company cites its own editorial teams and discovery features as strong enough alternatives to third-party websites and news operations that have historically made money in part by referring their readers to the App Store. The longstanding affiliate marketing service was a way to receive revenue from Apple that the company took out of its standard 30 percent iTunes and App Store cut, and that revenue provided a much-needed source of revenue for independent news sites and publications that wrote about and linked to mobile apps. As Apple puts it, the affiliate program is unneccesary "with the launch of the new App... |
Apple’s next iPad Pro will have tiny bezels, but no notch Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:49 PM PDT An icon found in iOS 12 developer beta 5 seems to have confirmed key details about Apple's upcoming next-gen iPad Pro: the new tablet will ultra-thin bezels, just like the iPhone X, but no notch. As reported by 9to5Mac, the tiny blue iOS 12 icon shows a tablet with thinner, more uniform border lines and a home row of apps at the bottom. The existing iPad icon does show a home button and a front-facing camera at the top. Last year, an accidental HomePod firmware release revealed the front-facing design of the iPhone X in very similar fashion, so it's likely this icon, though not part of any leak, is a legitimate look at the front-facing design of the next iPad Pro. We've also heard rumors of Apple going with a bezel-less design for its... |
Tesla’s autonomous ‘coast-to-coast’ drive on hold while Autopilot team focuses on safety Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:40 PM PDT Tesla's autonomous coast-to-coast drive, originally promised in 2016, is on hold while the company's Autopilot team stays "heads down" on improving the driver assist system's safety features, Elon Musk said in a call with investors Wednesday. Musk also teased a new software update to Autopilot — version 9.0 — coming in September that he said would be a stark improvement over the current version. Tesla built a new version of its semi-autonomous system, known as Autopilot, in 2016 after a public breakup with the original supplier of the technology. Shortly after unveiling the replacement hardware and software, Musk claimed that the company's new version — Autopilot 2.0 — would be good enough that a car equipped with it would complete a... |
Boeing delays first crucial test flights of its new passenger spacecraft again Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:22 PM PDT As expected, the first major test flights for Boeing's new passenger spacecraft have been delayed again, following an engine test mishap that occurred over a month ago. The crew capsule, known as the CST-100 Starliner, was scheduled to perform two major test flights to the International Space Station this year. But now, the test failure has forced Boeing to change its flight schedule, and it's possible that both of those major flights will now occur in 2019. Boeing is developing the Starliner as part of NASA's Commercial Crew program, an initiative to send humans to the ISS on private US spacecraft. The vehicle is meant to carry seven passengers and travel to space on top of an Atlas V rocket, manufactured by the United Launch Alliance.... |
TSA reportedly considering an end to passenger screening at small airports Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:16 PM PDT The Transportation Security Administration is examining the possibility of doing away with passenger screening at small- and medium-sized airports across the United States, according to CNN. The news was part of "internal documents from a TSA working group," which said that eliminating screening could save $115 million each year. The working group's proposal would cover more than 150 airports that offer flights predominantly with 60 or fewer seats. Travelers making connecting flights at bigger airports would need to go through security at the second airport, an approach that differs from the current system of letting them into the screened pool at other US airports once they've proceeded through the TSA's enhanced measures at the... |
Facebook’s security chief is leaving, and no one’s going to replace him Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:26 PM PDT Facebook's chief security officer, Alex Stamos, said today that he'll be leaving the company later this month. The announcement comes just a day after Facebook — and to a large extent, Stamos — revealed that Facebook had discovered malicious actors who continue to use the platform to manipulate political discussions and organizing in the United States. Stamos won't be replaced after he leaves, meaning no one will hold the title of "chief security officer" at Facebook. All eyes are trained on the company to see how it will deal with major security concerns, including the use of fake accounts to manipulate politics and the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. Instead of building out a dedicated security team, Facebook has dissolved it and is... |

Juul plans to release new Bluetooth-enabled vapes internationally Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:08 PM PDT E-cigarette startup Juul Labs is planning to release Bluetooth-enabled vapes internationally, Bloomberg reports. The new tech could help lock out underage people who try to use the devices. "We are actively evaluating new technologies and features to help keep Juul out of the hands of young people," Juul spokesperson Victoria Davis says. The move comes as Juul faces down user lawsuits and an investigation by the Massachusetts attorney general that accuse the company of hooking young people on nicotine. There have been hints that the company is at least considering some new tech for its products in its recent patent application, which was published in April and first spotted by Bloomberg. The application includes features that could help... |
Some of our favorite USB-C hubs are cheaper than ever for Verge readers Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:00 PM PDT If you've recently bought a MacBook, a Pixelbook, or a slim Windows laptop, there's a somewhat high chance that you'll find it has a sole USB-C port, or two if you're lucky. That's simply not enough for most people. Thankfully, USB-C hubs leverage the power of the port to greatly expand the capabilities of your machine. On the downside, not all hubs are created equal, with many of them being underpowered or lacking in useful expansions, like an SD card slot or an Ethernet port. But on the plus side, we've worked to get readers of The Verge an exclusive low price for one of our favorite USB-C hubs: the HooToo USB-C hub, which we picked as the best low-cost hub just two months ago. You'll notice that two hubs are listed below, and that's... |
Tesla is finally making money on the Model 3 Posted: 01 Aug 2018 01:56 PM PDT Tesla may have struggled through "production hell" to build the Model 3, but the car has helped the company set a new record: $4 billion in revenue in the second quarter of 2018, according to an earnings report published on Wednesday. It also reached another milestone: the Model 3 is finally starting to make Tesla some money. The plan to sell the more expensive versions of Tesla's mass market car so that the company doesn't "die" is working. The Model 3's gross margins, a measure of the revenue that the company retains after costs associated with producing it, turned "slightly positive" in Q2, according to the company. That's despite the fact that production was still ramping up and that Tesla had yet to ship any of the expensive... |
