WhatsApp backups will stop counting toward your Google Drive storage Posted: 16 Aug 2018 03:03 PM PDT Good news for the more than 1 billion WhatsApp users out there: starting this November, you won't need to sacrifice valuable Google Drive storage space to back up your messages. Until now, any WhatsApp data that was backed up onto Google's Drive counted toward the space you had available in the cloud. But the Facebook-owned company cut a deal with Google to make those backups completely free, even while staying inside your personal account. It's a handy way to keep tabs on all of your messages if you lose or break a phone that you use for messaging on the regular. WhatsApp is a little different from other texting apps that store messages on their servers: it requires users to back up their messages to another company's cloud service to... |
Doja Cat’s viral hit ‘Mooo!’ is the perfect meme banger about cows Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:54 PM PDT Doja Cat (real name: Amala Zandile Dlamini) is a 22-year-old LA artist who makes music she's described as "trappy-go-lucky," and this week she's scored her latest viral hit in "Mooo!" — where she raps the chorus "bitch, I'm a cow" while dancing around her bedroom in front of a homemade green screen while dressed in a cow costume. The video quickly blew up the internet, earning 1.3 million views in six-ish days. Dlamini told Noisey the idea came from one of her regular Instagram Live sessions, where she says she hangs out with her fans to produce and write — "50-60 people" a session, in her words. Some of those people thought her freestyling about cows was funny, and urged her to write a full song. (The costume is for Dlamini's upcoming... |
Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:38 PM PDT A former member of Tesla's in-house security team has told the Securities and Exchange Commission that the company silenced internal investigations into alleged criminal activity at the Gigafactory in Nevada, according to a summary of his formal complaint. Those investigations focused on claims of massive theft and "substantial drug trafficking." The complaint also includes allegations that Tesla spied on employees' electronic devices. It's the second known whistleblower complaint from a former Tesla employee filed with the SEC this summer. The news was first reported by Jalopnik. Karl Hansen, the former employee, claims that Tesla was told in May by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Storey County Sheriff's Office Task Force... |
Google might be opening a retail store in Chicago Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:03 PM PDT Google's latest plan to tackle the retail market involves a two-floor store in Chicago's Fulton Market. If it pans out, this would be the tech company's first permanent retail location. The space would total 14,000 square feet across several interconnected brick buildings, according to The Chicago Tribune. This planned store would be several blocks south of the company's Midwest HQ. This isn't Google's first attempt at a brick-and-mortar store, which would be a prime locale to show off its ever-growing selection of hardware products. But until now, Google's been relegated to the occasional pop-up and "stores within stores" in the US and UK, sectioning off space to show demos of Chromebooks, smart speakers, and phones. |
Google employees are protesting the company’s secrecy over censored search engine in China Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:50 PM PDT About a thousand Google employees have signed a letter protesting the company's efforts to build a censored version of its search engine in China, as reported by The New York Times. The letter calls for more transparency and consideration of the human rights issues involved, as internet monitoring and collaboration with the Chinese government is used to stifle dissident voices and even put activists' personal information at risk. The letter reads "currently we do not have the information required to make ethically-informed decisions about our work, our projects, and our employment," as two anonymous sources informed the Times. It continued, "Google employees need to know what we're building." On August 3rd, The Intercept and The... |
How to get six free months of Apple Music on Verizon Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:55 AM PDT Last week, Verizon somewhat randomly announced a new, close partnership with Apple. Phase one of their alliance is pretty great if you're a Verizon customer: you get six free months of Apple Music — so long as you're on one of the carrier's current postpaid unlimited data plans. Verizon didn't share many details when the deal was first announced, but today it's actually available to sign up for. The free half-year of Apple Music is open to current, new, and former subscribers of Apple's premium music service. To immediately begin your free six months, follow these steps:

Wikipedia dropped a surprise streetwear collab to keep knowledge free Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:51 AM PDT Los Angeles streetwear brand and crystal shop Advisory Board Crystals has teamed up with Wikipedia to release a surprise clothing collaboration. The result is a single long-sleeve T-shirt with ABC pledging all proceeds toward the Wikipedia Foundation. The shirt sports a combination of the Wikipedia logo and familiar visual elements of internet design to represent appropriated concepts. "Knowledge is power and awareness is survival," says Advisory Board Crystals in their description. Wikipedia relies on donations to run, and while they do have an existing online store that sells everything from clothing to vision statement notebooks, you can now look cool while supporting open discourse and international cooperation. The question is, do... |
Facebook secures deal to stream Champions League matches in Latin America Posted: 16 Aug 2018 11:50 AM PDT Facebook has secured the rights to broadcast UEFA matches in much of Latin America, the association said yesterday. This can give Latin American soccer fans the chance to tune into their favorite sport without the need to pay to watch on their local TV station. The contract includes a free live stream of both the organization's Champions League and Super Cup matches, adding up to 32 matches per season. A ton of Latin America's top players take part in these leagues every year, making this partnership a big deal for many soccer fans. It's the latest in Facebook's attempt to tackle the live sports streaming market, including its move in January to hire Peter... |
This Elon Musk-approved documentary focuses on the wrong bits of AI Posted: 16 Aug 2018 12:20 PM PDT This review previously ran in April to coincide with a special online release. It is being updated to coincide with the film's return to theaters in limited release. Do You Trust This Computer? is not a particularly subtle watch. The documentary, from filmmaker Chris Paine, is dedicated to the dangers of artificial intelligence, and while it didn't make a splash in theaters, it was promoted enthusiastically by Elon Musk, who tweeted about the film and paid for it be streamed for free in early April. (Musk also appears in the documentary as a talking head.) It starts by bombarding viewers with quotations and whizzy graphics of phones and brains. "We have a networked intelligence that watches us, knows everything about us," says one. "The... |
