The US government alleges Facebook enabled housing ad discrimination Posted: 19 Aug 2018 02:36 PM PDT Facebook has a new headache when it comes to housing advertisements. The federal government has filed charges (via Axios) that the social media site violated the Fair Housing Act by allowing ads to discriminate against some protected groups. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) filed its complaint last week over the company's advertising practices, something that investigative reporting and nonprofit groups have alleged for the last two years. In 2016, a ProPublica investigation revealed that anyone advertising housing could discriminate on the basis of race, and a year later, a followup investigation found that Facebook hadn't solved the problem. The company had updated its advertising policies, but despite those... |
Fortnite looks terrible on my Android phone and I love it Posted: 19 Aug 2018 11:00 AM PDT As an Android user, I've been waiting a long time to play Fortnite on the go. First, there was the Nintendo Switch version, which I was incredibly excited about until I realized I couldn't access my PS4 account on the tablet. Then, developer Epic announced that the mobile version of the battle royale shooter was expanding from iOS to Android, and it finally launched last week. For the most part, it's just what I expected, apart from one major change: on my Galaxy S7 Edge, Fortnite looks like a low-poly PlayStation-era game. And I kind of love it. Once you get around the install process, Fortnite works surprisingly well on mobile. My phone isn't exactly brand-new, yet the battle royale game runs pretty smoothly. I haven't experienced any... |
Amazon appears to have discontinued the Kindle Voyage Posted: 19 Aug 2018 10:24 AM PDT At the end of July, Amazon quietly removed its Kindle Voyage from its storefront, and appears to have discontinued the line of eBook readers, according to TheEbookReader and GoodEReader. Both sites report that Amazon removed the model (refurbished versions are still available), as well as from its comparison table, leaving only the basic Kindle, mid-range Kindle Paperwhite, and premium Kindle Oasis. The Voyage was originally released in 2014 and featured some additional perks above the basic Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite: it was thinner and lighter, a glass screen, haptic buttons to turn pages, and a "simple and utilitarian" design. But it came at a higher price: $200, and with the release of the $250 Kindle Oasis in 2016, the Voyage... |

Adidas is partnering with Twitter to stream high school football games Posted: 19 Aug 2018 09:47 AM PDT Twitter and Adidas are partnering to launch a new series called "Friday Night Stripes," an eight-game series of high school football games that will stream live on the social media platform. "Nationally ranked teams" from California, Nevada, Indiana, Georgia, and Florida will be part of the series, and will start on September 7th and will finish on November 9th. TechCrunch notes that NFL games have been popular on the site, and that this is the first time that high school games will be streamed in this fashion. The games will be available on @adidasFballUS on both mobile and desktop devices, and will be accompanied by a Twitter timeline with additional coverage and tweets. The first game will be... |
China’s NIO files for IPO in the US in push to compete with Tesla Posted: 19 Aug 2018 09:00 AM PDT China's NIO is arguably the furthest along of all the flashy electric car startups that have formed over the last few years. Now it wants to go public in the United States on the New York Stock Exchange, according to a filing with the SEC this past week. But a close inspection of that document shows the company faces potential roadblocks in both demand for and production of its first car, and it also exposes that the company discovered a crucial financial problem in the months leading up to the IPO. NIO has come a long way for having such a short history. Founded in 2014, it quickly (in automotive industry timescale) designed and produced a small batch of an all-electric supercar called the EP9, which has already broken a few EV and... |
Camp W is a great game for the end of summer Posted: 19 Aug 2018 08:00 AM PDT It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend. Summer camps can be a magical time. They're often the first time a kid gets to be away from home — and away from parental supervision — for an extended period of time. It's a test of their independence, but also their ability to adapt to a new social situation by being thrown together with a bunch of new people. It's almost like a dry run for going away to college or moving out on your own, except in theory it has some form of adult supervision. This aspect of summer camps is at the core of visual novel Camp W. It tells the... |
You can now download tickets to visit museums for free on Sept. 22nd Posted: 19 Aug 2018 07:00 AM PDT Museums across the country will offer free admission on Saturday, Sept. 22nd for the Smithsonian's annual Museum Day. The catch is that you'll need online tickets, which are available for download now. Over a thousand museums are participating, including many delightful, niche ones. In Elmhurst, Illinois, there's the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, focused on gemstones and carvings. (See video below.) Indiana's "Life on the Ohio River" History Museum is participating, as is California's Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum. You can get tickets to the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum & Arctic Studies Center in Maine, or Rhode Island's Beavertail Lighthouse Museum.
