Samsung announces its first Android Go phone Posted: 23 Aug 2018 08:09 PM PDT Samsung has announced the Galaxy J2 Core, the company's first phone to run Android Go. As previously leaked, that doesn't mean stock Android in this case — Go is a stripped-down version of the operating system with lighter versions of Google apps and optimizations for lower-end devices, but there's still a layer of Samsung UI on top. The J2 Core is based on Android 8.1 Oreo, not the upcoming Android 9 Pie version of Go. Here's the list of specs for Samsung's Galaxy J2 Core:
You're not going to be playing Fortnite on this Galaxy, then, but Android Go should help make the most of the... |
Google is bringing the redesigned Gmail’s nifty side panel to other G Suite apps Posted: 23 Aug 2018 04:34 PM PDT The newly redesigned Gmail has a lot of smart tricks, but none offer quite as significant a boost to productivity as the side panel. The feature lets you quickly pop open a sidebar of Google apps like Tasks and Calendar, so you can then edit your to-do list or add a meeting to your schedule without having to leave your inbox. It's so popular with Gmail users, it seems, that Google is expanding it. The company says it's introducing that side panel feature to other G Suite Apps, so you'll now be able to access Google Calendar, Keep, and Tasks from within Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawings. You'll also be access Keep and Tasks from within Calendar. If you don't like the side panel or feel it makes a... |
Google took down 39 YouTube channels linked to Iranian influence campaign Posted: 23 Aug 2018 04:17 PM PDT Google today disclosed details about its ongoing efforts to combat influence campaigns from foreign governments and other forms of election interference, with the company outlining its recent ban of 39 YouTube accounts linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting. Google's announcement comes on the heels of Facebook's admission earlier this week that it identified and deleted more than 600 accounts linked to both Iran and Russian that were coordinating influence campaigns on the platform by posting politically charged content. Kent Walker, Google's senior vice president of global affairs, says Google's Threat Analysis Group worked alongside its Trust & Safety team and its Jigsaw division, its policy think tank-turned ideas lab... |
The Pixel 3 XL notch might house a wide-angle sensor for selfies Posted: 23 Aug 2018 01:11 PM PDT The Pixel 3 and 3 XL leaks keep coming, and today, 9to5Google reports additional details on both devices' camera setups. The report says that both devices' rumored dual, front-facing cameras will house one wide-angle sensor, so users can take "Super Selfies." These cameras would also ship with an improved portrait mode. Google seems to be sticking with the single, rear-facing camera. Every leak we've seen so far shows that Google is leaning into the notch trend with one at the top of both devices, and 9to5Google says that the dual-camera system could be used to create a new facial recognition system, but the publication's source didn't give much in the way of confirmation. This source also tells 9to5Google that the phones will ship with... |
Sony’s new PS4 Cloud Remote can detect and control your TV Posted: 23 Aug 2018 12:54 PM PDT Sony has a new device for controlling media playback and other activities on the PlayStation 4 that aren't exactly game pad-friendly. Called the PS4 Cloud Remote and developed in partnership with Performance Designed Products, the device is a programmable remote that can detect and control your television. That way, you can change inputs and even turn the volume up and down without having to use a secondary device. The product is an update to an existing PDP-made remote for the PS4 that appears not to include the TV control or programmable features. With the "cloud" version — that buzzword being used somewhat nebulously here — you can customize the button layout by using the PDP Cloud Remote App for PS4, presumably to make it more... |

Posted: 23 Aug 2018 12:38 PM PDT Dril, the Master Poster, has written a book. It is a 420-page tome that is available now from Amazon, titled Dril Official "Mr. Ten Years" Anniversary Collection. Before joining Twitter in 2008, @dril — revealed a few years ago to be a guy named Paul, though no one cares who he is because we still need good things online — originated as a regular contributor to Something Awful's influential FYAD (that's "fuck you and die") board. When he and others from the Something Awful community migrated to Twitter, they brought their forum's sensibility with them, eventually evolving into the wider constellation of surrealist shitposters known as Weird Twitter. It's dadaism at the speed and scale of the internet, and without question, Dril has been... |
Fortnite’s rift-to-go patch hides a bunch of cool stuff Posted: 23 Aug 2018 11:37 AM PDT Fortnite might update regularly, but Epic Games still packs plenty of surprises within expected patches. This week sees the introduction of a rare item that is poised to shake up conventional playing methods even further away from "just build, lol." Rifts have been populating the island since the start of the season, but until now, they've only appeared at fixed locations. As of patch version 5.30, players can now find a "Rift-to-go" epic-level item that acts as a mobile teleportation device. Once in hand, players shake the snow globe-like object and are catapulted high into the sky where they can dispatch an umbrella to break the fall. Rift-to-gos can be popped in the middle of the air, and once deployed, the rift lingers for 10... |
Verizon says throttling firefighters wasn’t about net neutrality — was it? Posted: 23 Aug 2018 11:10 AM PDT When news broke this week that Verizon was slowing California firefighters' data speeds during a wildfire crisis, there was a predictable outrage over the company's actions. In a legal brief filed by Santa Clara County fire officials against the FCC's net neutrality repeal, emergency responders explained how Verizon dropped their connection to a crawl, even after being informed of the emergency. The company didn't restore the speeds until the fire department paid for a better plan. While Verizon admitted that it made a customer service policy mistake, it was also quick to deny one point: "This situation has nothing to do with net neutrality or the current proceeding in court," a spokesperson said in the first line of the company's... |
Apple has greenlit a TV show based on Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series Posted: 23 Aug 2018 11:25 AM PDT Apple has given a straight-to-series order for an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's acclaimed science fiction Foundation trilogy after picking up the show for development earlier this spring. In April, Deadline reported that Apple was developing an adaptation of the series, which adds to the company's growing list of original content offerings as it seeks to compete with the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Disney. The initial order for the show is 10 episodes. The show comes from David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the upcoming Snowpiercer TV show), who began work on the project last year with Skydance Television. The studio also worked on this year's Netflix series A... |
