Here’s the first trailer for the third season of HBO’s True Detective Posted: 26 Aug 2018 07:32 PM PDT HBO aired the final episode of its miniseries Sharp Objects tonight, and when it did so, it released the first look at the upcoming third season of its crime anthology show, True Detective, which will premiere in January 2019. This new season will be set in the Ozarks, and will follow a state police detective named Wayne Hays (played by Moonlight and House of Cards star Mahershala Ali) as he investigates what appears to be the kidnapping of a child. As Polygon's Julia Alexander noted, this trailer brings back some of the vibe that defined the first outstanding season for the series, teasing a weird mystery that's divided up into a couple of different time periods as a detective works to solve a case, with allusions that something... |
Multiple people are dead after a mass shooting at a Madden tournament in Jacksonville, Florida Posted: 26 Aug 2018 12:09 PM PDT CNN is reporting that a gunman has opened fire at a Madden gaming event in Jacksonville, Florida, with multiple fatalities reported. The Jacksonville Sheriff's department posted a notification on Twitter this afternoon, saying that the shooting had taken place at Jacksonville Landing, a shopping mall in the city, and warned people to stay away while they secured the scene. The sheriff's office confirmed that there were "multiple fatalities," and that one suspect has been killed. At 4:30PM ET, Jacksonville Sheriff deputy Mike Williams provided an update, saying that they had cleared the scene, and confirmed that a single, white male shooter was dead at the scene, but didn't reveal his identity. They indicated that there were no... |

Deepfakes for dancing: you can now use AI to fake those dance moves you always wanted Posted: 26 Aug 2018 11:00 AM PDT Artificial intelligence is proving to be a very capable tool when it comes to manipulating videos of people. Face-swapping deepfakes have been the most visible example, but new applications are being found every day. The latest? Call it deepfakes for dancing — it uses AI to read someone's dance moves and copy them on to a target body. The actual science here was done by a quartet of researchers from UC Berkley. As they describe in a paper posted on arXiV, their system is comprised of a number of discrete steps. First, a video of the target is recorded, and a sub-program turns their movements into a stick figure. (Quite of a lot of video is needed to get a good quality transfer; around 20 minutes of footage at 120 frames per second.)... |
Alleged Facebook scammer arrested in Ecuador after three years on the run Posted: 26 Aug 2018 10:00 AM PDT Sometime in April 2003, Paul Ceglia and Mark Zuckerberg did business together and signed a contract. According to Zuckerberg (and eventually, federal prosecutors), it was a simple work-for-hire programming job — but in 2010, Ceglia went to court arguing the contract entitled him to half of Facebook, already worth billions. With the Winklevoss settlement still fresh, it may have seemed like a quick path to a payoff, but Facebook refused to play ball. The case stalled, and soon Ceglia was charged with fraud for falsifying documents and placed under house arrest. Dropped by eight different lawyers, Ceglia faced legal defeat after legal defeat, eventually scrambling simply to stay out of prison. Then, in a move almost no one expected, Ceglia... |
China’s Didi suspends ride-share service after the murder of a female passenger Posted: 26 Aug 2018 09:39 AM PDT On Friday, a driver for Didi Chuxing's rideshare service Hitch killed his 20-year-old female passenger in the Chinese city of Wenzhou. Following the incident, the company says that it will suspend the ride-hailing service while the company examines its practices. This is the second such death associated with the app this year. In May, a driver raped and murdered his 21-year-old passenger in Henan province, using his father's account, which prompted the company to suspend its service for six weeks as it made some changes. Female riders had complained that drivers often left inappropriate comments on their profiles after using the service, and the company implemented an emergency button, late-night restrictions, and new verification... |
Drawn is a podcast miniseries that explores how your favorite cartoons are made Posted: 26 Aug 2018 08:00 AM PDT There are a ton of podcasts out there, but finding the right one can be difficult. In our column Pod Hunters, we cover what we've been listening to that we can't stop thinking about. Earlier this summer, How Stuff Works released a fantastic podcast miniseries called Drawn: The Story of Animation, which takes a close look at the history of cartoons, and how we went from the classic Warner Bros. stable of characters to the latest hits like Rick and Morty. It's a well-researched, engaging podcast to binge on, even if you're just a casual fan of cartoons. Over the course of 11 episodes, host Holly Frey takes listeners through a wide range of elements that make up a finished cartoon, and collectively, tell a broader story about how your... |
Bang & Olufsen adds Google Assistant to its expensive Beosound speakers Posted: 26 Aug 2018 07:00 AM PDT Bang & Olufsen is making its Beosound 1 and BeoSound 2 speakers a bit smarter this fall. The company will release new versions featuring Google Assistant in September, which is a nice upgrade for speakers that start at $1,750. Initially released in 2016, the Beosound 1 and 2 have a distinct tapering, cylindrical design and already support a number of wireless streaming options including Chromecast, AirPlay 2, and Spotify Connect. The Beosound 1 is designed to be portable and features a built-in rechargeable battery, while the Beosound 2 is heftier and needs to be plugged in but produces a lush sound, as my colleague Dan Seifert noted in his review. At $1,750 and $2,250 for the Beosound 1 and... |
Snapchat now lets you send musical GIFs Posted: 26 Aug 2018 06:00 AM PDT Music GIF provider TuneMoji has announced that it's integrated within Snapchat, as reported by Business Insider. This means that users with the TuneMoji app installed can send clips to their Snap story, or within a chat. A TuneMoji GIFs adds a layer of music (or spoken audio) that is looped along with the GIF. TuneMoji sort of works like Giphy with a searchable database of GIFs and you can search by words or phrases, or by emoji. Once you select the musical GIF you want, you then choose where you want to share it — and Snapchat now pops up as an option. The company was able to integrate into Snapchat via the platform's new developer kit, Snap Kit. Launched in June, Snap Kit allows developers to bring core features of Snapchat to their... |
