Tesla properly cautioned shareholders about Model 3 struggles, court rules Posted: 27 Aug 2018 03:04 PM PDT A shareholder lawsuit that claimed Tesla made false statements about Model 3 production was dismissed Monday. The case is not completely closed — the presiding judge granted the dismissal with "leave to amend," meaning the plaintiffs have until September 28th to take the judge's decision into consideration and file an adjusted complaint. Originally filed in October 2017, the lawsuit alleged that Tesla and CEO Elon Musk repeatedly misled shareholders about the progress being made during the run-up to full-scale production of the Model 3, the company's first mass-market vehicle. The plaintiffs (who sought but have not been granted class-action status) built their case around statements made by Tesla and Musk in SEC filings and during... |
Disney’s streaming service doesn’t have a name, but it does have a strategy Posted: 27 Aug 2018 01:31 PM PDT It's no secret that Disney CEO Bob Iger sees the company's upcoming streaming service as a crucial part of the company's larger strategy. A new report from Variety rounds up some essential details about the service, and its place in the larger entertainment landscape. Currently slated to launch in late 2019, the service is the company's answer to Netflix, a direct-to-consumer streaming service that will feature an assortment of exclusive Disney library titles as well as a robust lineup of original TV shows and films created just for the service. Development and production are already well underway for the original productions, which include new episodes of the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a new live-action Star Wars series from J... |
Samsung’s popular 860 Evo 1TB SSD is $70 off Posted: 27 Aug 2018 01:09 PM PDT Samsung's 860 Evo 1TB solid state drive is $179.99 at B&H Photo and Amazon, which is $70 off of its regular cost. Launched earlier in 2018, this model succeeds the popular 850 Evo with improved LPDDR4 DRAM and 64-layer 3D NAND. While the more budget-friendly Evo series isn't quite as fast as Samsung's Pro series, this is still one of the best SSDs you can buy, regardless of whether you're upgrading or building your PC from scratch. If you're looking for the same capacity in the m.2 SATA form factor instead of the standard 2.5-inch model, you can find it for $199 (which is also $70 worth of savings). |
Apple could remove 3D Touch from new iPhones, analyst says Posted: 27 Aug 2018 12:36 PM PDT Apple made a huge deal about 3D Touch when it came to the iPhone in 2015. Now, just three years and phone generations later, Apple's pressure-sensitive screen technology might be on its way out the door. Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis said today that it's "widely understood" that some of this year's iPhones won't include 3D Touch, according to MacRumors, which saw his note to investors. Curtis was referring to the two rumored high-end iPhones, which will include OLED displays (like the iPhone X). That still leaves the other rumored model, which is supposed to look like a larger version of the iPhone X with a cheaper LCD... |
A neuroscientist explains what tech does to the reading brain Posted: 27 Aug 2018 12:19 PM PDT For anyone who has ever been a reader, there's much to sympathize with in Maryanne Wolf's Reader, Come Home. The UCLA neuroscientist, a great lover of literature, tries to read Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game, an old favorite, only to realize that she finds him boring and too complex. She wonders why he ever won a Nobel. And Wolf, who previously wrote Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, is horrified that this is what has happened to her ability to concentrate. Reader, Come Home is about, as its subtitle states, "the reading brain in a digital world." The Verge spoke to Wolf about how technology is changing the brain, what we lose when we lose deep attention, and what to do about it. This interview has been... |
Dragon Quest’s creator doesn’t want to stop working anytime soon Posted: 27 Aug 2018 12:09 PM PDT For nearly half his life, Yuji Horii has been obsessed with giant dragons and cute blue blobs. In 1986, he partnered with composer Koichi Sugiyama and artist Akira Toriyama — best known for creating Dragon Ball — to design a new role-playing game for the Famicom, the Japanese version of the NES. The goal was to streamline the game, making RPGs approachable for even casual players, while still retaining the feeling of going on an epic quest. The result was Dragon Quest, which went on to become a blockbuster in Japan and one of the country's most iconic and best-selling video game series. Next week will see the debut of Dragon Quest XI in North America, a title that marks the series's 30th anniversary. Horii is now 64, which means that the... |
Toyota will reportedly invest $500 million in Uber for self-driving car research Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:52 AM PDT Toyota will invest $500 million in Uber in a deal that values the ride-hail giant at $72 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal. As part of the agreement, the two companies will work jointly on developing self-driving cars. That's a slightly higher valuation for Uber than what it got last December when Japan's Softbank acquired a 20 percent stake in the ride-hailing business. The news comes as Uber has been scaling back its in-house self-driving car project in the wake of a fatal crash last March in Tempe, Arizona. A self-driving Uber vehicle struck and killed a 49-year-old woman as she was crossing the street. Spokespersons for Uber and Toyota did not immediately respond to a request for comment. |
Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey says Magic Leap’s headset is terrible Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:42 AM PDT Mixed reality company Magic Leap just released its not-quite-a-development-kit headset, called the Magic Leap One. Responses have been mixed. It's an ambitious and functional product, but one that's made significant compromises without delivering a uniquely powerful experience. But Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey has delivered one of the harshest assessments so far, calling it "a tragedy in the classical sense" and prompting Magic Leap's CEO to respond with an extended Avatar: The Last Airbender analogy. Oculus Rift inventor Luckey bought a Magic Leap One, and in a blog post, he argues that bad design decisions make it barely a viable product. He calls the headset interface "basically an Android Wear watch menu that floats in front of... |
Google Pixel 3 will reportedly be announced on October 9th in New York City Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:27 AM PDT Google will unveil its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones on October 9th, according to Bloomberg, with the event scheduled to take place in New York City. (The date and location were mentioned in Mark Gurman's report on the upcoming 2019 iPhones.) The Pixel and Pixel 2 were both announced on October 4th in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The launch target and new event location — previous Pixel events were held in California — comes after weeks of thorough leaks, photos, and plenty of video footage of the larger Pixel 3 XL device. We've now seen the phone (and its deep, deep notch), Google's bundled USB-C earbuds, and even the packaging and included stickers from every angle. Some videos have also poked around the pre-release software for... |
Watch 48 minutes of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay in 4K Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:17 AM PDT CD Projekt, the Poland-based game publisher responsible for The Witcher, just published 48 minutes of gameplay footage for its upcoming title Cyberpunk 2077, a futuristic sci-fi open-world game that generated a lot of buzz at this year's E3. The demo, first streamed live on the studio's Twitch channel and since published to YouTube in 4K, is the same behind-closed-doors footage select members of the press and notable game industry figures saw in Los Angeles in June. For a vast majority of people, however, this is the first concrete gameplay footage we're seeing of the title. 2015's The Witcher 3 was a groundbreaking RPG that further established CD Projekt and its Projekt Red game development division as influential open-world makers.... |
