Trump says Amazon, Facebook, and Google represent a ‘very antitrust situation’ Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:43 PM PDT President Donald Trump continued his war of words against technology companies for a third day in a row, this time telling Bloomberg News in an Oval Office interview this afternoon that he sees the power and influence of companies like Amazon, Facebook, and Google as a "very antitrust situation." Trump began his heightened criticism of Silicon Valley starting on Tuesday by criticizing Google for alleged skewing of search results in favor of left-wing media organizations, after watching a related Fox News segment that cited deeply flawed study results. "I won't comment on the breaking up, of whether it's that or Amazon or Facebook," Trump said, replying to a question on whether tech companies like Facebook and Google should be regulated... |
Slack quietly adds auto-expiring statuses Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:57 PM PDT Workplace chat and collaboration company Slack has quietly updated its status feature to include an expiration date, so you can set certain statuses like commuting, meetings, and vacation to expire after a distinct amount of time. Restarting Slack on mobile or desktop should pull up the new feature for all users, and it looks like the company updated its help center page for statuses yesterday to include information about the new change. Now, when you pull up the status screen, you'll get the same default statuses with pre-filled expiration times, including one hour for "in a meeting," 30 minutes for "commuting," and an unspecified length of time for "vacationing," which is a nice touch. If you'd like more granular control, you can... |
California is close to approving the strongest net neutrality law in the US Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:14 PM PDT California's state Assembly has approved a bill that would not just restore the net neutrality protections enacted under President Obama, but go beyond them, potentially creating the strictest rules in the country. The bill now heads back to the Senate for a final vote. But that needs to happen soon, or advocates will have to keep waiting: tomorrow is the last day for either chamber to pass legislation until next year. The bill, passed in a 58-17 vote today, prohibits internet providers from blocking or throttling any legal apps, websites, or other services and bans the paid prioritization of data. That's where the Obama-era rules left off. This bill also prohibits zero rating of specific apps, a practice that allows for the use of some... |
Google reportedly bought Mastercard data to link online ads with offline purchases Posted: 30 Aug 2018 02:58 PM PDT If you're a Mastercard holder in the US, Google has reportedly been tracking whether you are influenced by online ads in your offline purchases for the past year. That's thanks to a private deal between the two companies brokered after four years of negotiation, according to a Bloomberg report published today. Neither Google nor Mastercard have publicly announced the partnership, and neither company let its customers know that their offline purchases are being tracked through Mastercard purchase histories and correlated with online ad interactions. Google reportedly paid Mastercard millions of dollars for data on what people have been buying. It used that data to build a tool for advertisers that would break down whether people who had... |
Hello Kitty has no mouth, and she must vlog Posted: 30 Aug 2018 02:27 PM PDT Hello Kitty is a lot of things: a British schoolgirl, definitely not a cat, Japan's tourism ambassador, and now, YouTube vlogger. She put out her first video yesterday, and in it, she speaks honestly from the heart. It's actually the only place she can speak from because she has no mouth. Hello Kitty starts off by saying how she Googles herself sometimes and sees haters commenting that "she'll do anything," when actually, she just has a wide variety of interests. Vlogging just happens to be one of them. Initially, the head honchos at Sanrio were skeptical. They warned her that "the internet is a scary place," and not, "Hello Kitty, you have no mouth and cannot speak." Despite the odds stacked against her, she stands before us now in a... |
This is Google’s no-notch Pixel 3 smartphone Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:33 PM PDT Well, it was bound to happen. After several consecutive weeks of leaks spilled nearly every detail about its larger Pixel 3 XL counterpart, the first real-world photos of Google's Pixel 3 have been posted to the Pixel subreddit and republished by 9to5Google. And just as we'd anticipated, the front of the phone looks like a mini Pixel 2 XL; there's no notch to be seen on this one. The photos also confirm stereo front-facing speakers, dual selfie cameras, and the same rear, all-glass design as the 3 XL (with a matte coating covering a good portion of it). Today's leak reveals the 5.5-inch display will have a resolution of 2160x1080 and 2:1 aspect ratio. The battery capacity is said to be 2,915mAh. According to screenshots that came from... |
Scooters will return to San Francisco, but Bird and Lime aren’t invited Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:26 PM PDT After more than two months of waiting, San Francisco has announced that only two scooter companies are allowed to return to the city: Scoot and Skip. The news comes as a rebuke to hometown ride-hail companies Uber and Lyft, which are both expanding beyond cars in an effort to become one-stop mobility shops. It's also a snub to startups Bird and Lime, which are the two largest shared-scooter operators in the world; each is valued at over $1 billion. Skip and Scoot are much smaller companies, but they will no doubt see a boost after winning permits for San Francisco. According to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), both companies will be... |
YouTube may soon let you donate directly to fundraisers Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:18 PM PDT YouTube is giving creators more ways to fundraise with a bunch of new tools it announced today. Still in beta, the group of tools is called YouTube Giving, and it includes options for fundraisers, community fundraisers, campaign matching, and Super Chat for Good. The fundraisers feature lets fans donate to campaigns started by creators through a donate button. While the features are only open to a few creators so far, a fundraiser you can currently donate to is the Hope for Paws Fundraiser, which raises funds for animal rescue and recovery. YouTube says it's covering transaction fees during the beta period, but it doesn't specify if there will be fees once the feature fully goes live. Another beta feature lets... |
Another one of Jennifer Lawrence’s hackers is going to prison Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:46 PM PDT George Garofano — one of the four hackers who stole and leaked celebrity nudes in the 2014 event that came to be known as Celebgate (and on 4chan as "The Fappening") — has been sentenced to eight months of prison time. Variety reports, he'll also face three years of supervised release and 60 hours of community service after he gets out. In total, Garofano hacked more than 250 people, including Kate Upton, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kirsten Dunst. Three other hackers had already been sentenced for their roles in hacking the material that became Celebgate: Ryan Collins, 36, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to felony hacking and violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act; Edward Majerczyk, 28, pled guilty to the same... |
Earin’s second-generation wireless earbuds finally arrive with Google Assistant Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:08 PM PDT Earin was one of the first startups to ship truly wireless earbuds back in 2015, though they were marred with problems. The second version of Earin's buds, which were originally teased in early 2017 and are supposed to fix a lot of the first pair's issues, are finally being released. They include one big surprise, too: built-in Google Assistant. The M2 wireless earbuds are on sale today in the US for $249, available in black or white (with more colors on the way). They're also on sale in China and Japan, and they will hit Europe later this year. I got to try a prototype of the M2s at CES 2017, and I liked what I heard and saw in my limited time with them. They were especially small and light, and the company seemed to have directly... |
