Amazon is investigating claims that employees deleted reviews and sold sales data to sellers

Posted: 16 Sep 2018 02:00 PM PDT

On Sunday, The Wall Street Journal published a report that revealed that sellers have bribed Amazon employees to get access to internal sales data or to delete negative reviews, and that the company has launched an investigation into the practice.

According to the report, middlemen use social media sites like WeChat to track down Amazon employees, offering them cash to turn over internal information or to delete negative reviews. The WSJ also reports that it costs roughly $300 to take down a bad review, with brokers "[demanding] a five-review minimum" per transaction. Amazon employees have also been asked to provide e-mail addresses of customers who left negative reviews, or to provide sales information to give sellers an edge against...

BoJack Horseman season 5 examines the many flavors of sadness

Posted: 16 Sep 2018 01:00 PM PDT

In season 5 of Netflix's animated series BoJack Horseman, the troubled actor BoJack (Will Arnett) introduces a screening of Philbert, his new show about a detective who may have murdered his wife.

"We've all done terrible things that we deeply regret," he says. "I've done so many unforgivable things … and I think that's what this show says, is that we're all terrible, so we're all okay. I think that's a really powerful message."

That moment is in some ways an indictment of fans of BoJack Horseman and other anti-hero driven stories, particularly in a season that seems dedicated to showing it remembers every part of its title character's dark history from previous episodes. He nearly had sex with an old friend's teenage daughter. He went...

The Void is adding new VR experiences based on Disney and Marvel properties

Posted: 16 Sep 2018 12:31 PM PDT

Virtual reality arcade The Void is partnering with Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic's immersive entertainment wing ILMxLAB to develop a new slate of experiences based on Disney and Marvel Studios properties, with the first, Ralph Breaks VR, debuting this fall.

The company describes its games as "hyper-real" experiences, in which players don headsets, haptic vests, and backpack computers to dive right into the world of the game. FastCompany reports that the partnership will include five new games —the first of which is Ralph Breaks VR, and that another game "based on an undisclosed Marvel movie" will premiere next year. The company debuted Ghostbusters: Dimensions just before the rebooted film by Paul Feig hit theaters and...

Amazon’s gaming controller will no longer work with the latest Fire TVs

Posted: 16 Sep 2018 11:44 AM PDT

Amazon appears to have removed support for its gaming controller for its latest Fire TV devices after a recent update, according to AFTVnews.

The site (via Engadget) notes that after a recent software update, a Fire TV 3 won't be able to find the controller. It also points out that the controller's product page now says that while the device works with the Fire TV stick, it's no longer compatible with the Fire TV with 4K Ultra HD - Pendant Design, Fire TV Edition smart TVs, or the Fire TV Cube. However, the site observed that the controller does still work with the Fire TV Cube, and predicts that that functionality might go away in the near future. Earlier generation Fire TVs will still support the device. We've reached out to Amazon for...

Here’s what Google Maps looks like running on Apple CarPlay

Posted: 16 Sep 2018 11:00 AM PDT

With iOS 12, Apple is giving third-party apps more flexibility and new capabilities within CarPlay. As an example, for the first time, you can use other apps besides Apple Maps as your preferred navigation software for Apple's in-car platform. With that change now possible, Google Maps and Waze are both planning to support CarPlay and have begun beta testing.

Unfortunately it's not a beta test most of us can join, so you'll have to wait for the proper release before you can use either of these in your own vehicle through CarPlay. But some early screenshots posted by 9to5Mac provide a good preview of how Google Maps and Waze will look once that happens.

Both apps are already available on Android Auto, so the developers...

The Trump administration could announce another round of tariffs tomorrow

Posted: 16 Sep 2018 10:45 AM PDT

The next round of trade tariffs against China could be announced as soon as Monday or Tuesday, reports Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials.

The WSJ notes that officials have said that the level will be around 10 percent when they go into effect in November, but that they could go up to 25 percent level if China doesn't back down.

In August, the Trump administration levied a 25 percent tariff against $16 billion in Chinese goods. The tariffs went into effect on August 23rd, and included some electronics, chemicals, and batteries. The administration proposed another round of tariffs in June and July against $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, which would include consumer electronics from companies like Apple, Fitbit,...

Microsoft could be preparing to return to a black color for its upcoming Surface hardware. While the software giant originally launched its Surface RT in a black "VaporMg" magnesium alloy, the company quickly switched to a silver color for the Surface 2. German site Windows United originally reported that Microsoft will be launching a new black variant for its Surface hardware, and now Thurrott reports this will include both the Surface Laptop 2 and refreshed Surface Pro.

Microsoft is expected to unveil refreshes of both the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro at an event in New York City on October 2nd. The new models will likely include Intel's latest processors, a switch to USB-C, and a possible new black color variant. If the reports are...

Bad North is a scaled-down RTS that’s perfect for the Switch

Posted: 16 Sep 2018 10:00 AM PDT

Real-time strategy games and consoles typically don't go well together. The genre is all about managing a lot of different jobs very quickly, and, typically, the best way to do that is with a mouse and keyboard. But Bad North, which launched last month, goes against this conventional wisdom. It pares back the genre to its bare essentials, creating something that's streamlined and approachable instead of overwhelming. It's the rare RTS that works well with a controller. "We've made a conscious effort to resist adding a lot of complexity to the game," says Oskar Stålberg, one half of Bad North developer Plausible Concept.

The first thing you'll notice about Bad North — or maybe the second, after its cute and clean visuals — is that it...
