SpaceX will send Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa to the Moon Posted: 17 Sep 2018 06:41 PM PDT This evening, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed that Yusaku Maezawa, a Japanese billionaire and founder of Zozotown, Japan's largest online clothing retailer, will be the first private customer to ride around the Moon on the company's future massive rocket, the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR). Maezawa plans to fly on the trip as early as 2023, and he wants to take artists with him to turn the entire ride into an art project called #dearMoon. A website for the mission went live after the announcement. "Finally, I can tell you that I choose to go to the Moon! I choose to go to the moon with artists!" Maezawa said to announce his trip at a SpaceX event. Maezawa, who is 42, reportedly has a current net worth of $2.9 billion, according to Forbes. He is... |
Elon Musk reveals updated design for future SpaceX Mars rocket Posted: 17 Sep 2018 06:38 PM PDT This evening, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk gave an update on the design of SpaceX's future massive rocket, the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), during an event announcing the first passenger who will fly on the vehicle. The rocket's capability has changed. Musk claims that once the rocket is complete, it will be able to take up to 100 tons of payload all the way to Mars. That's if the rocket gets refueled in orbit by some kind of tanker spacecraft. He also showed off a simulation of how the vehicle will land on the surface of Mars. "I can't wait," Musk said at the event. "I'm super fired up about this. This is amazing." The BFR is instrumental to SpaceX's plans of sending humans to... |
Twitter will soon let you switch between chronological and ranked feeds Posted: 17 Sep 2018 05:31 PM PDT Twitter has made a surprise change to how it shows tweets to its users, following a viral thread earlier today that discussed ways to reverse the platform's algorithmic timeline. Now, when you uncheck the settings box reading "Show the best tweets first," Twitter will completely revert your timeline to a non-algorithmic, reverse-chronological order, which is how Twitter was originally designed and operated for years until the company introduced a default algorithmic model in early 2016. Prior to the change, unchecking the box would still result in the "in case you missed it" tweets, recommended tweets from people you didn't follow, and tweets informing you when someone you do follow liked or interacted with someone else's tweet. Emmy winners 2018: the complete list Posted: 17 Sep 2018 08:08 PM PDT Going into the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, it looked to be a battle between two TV titans. In one corner was established TV powerhouse HBO, which went into the evening with 29 different Emmy nominations for shows like Westworld, Silicon Valley, Game of Thrones, and Insecure. In the other was Netflix, with a whopping 37 total nominations, thanks to show like Black Mirror, Stranger Things, GLOW, and The Crown. But while HBO ultimately took home the top honor for Outstanding Drama Series for Game of Thrones, for much of the evening it seemed like another player had most of the momentum: Amazon. FCC chairman says California’s net neutrality bill is ‘egregious’ and ‘illegal’ Posted: 17 Sep 2018 04:09 PM PDT FCC chairman Ajit Pai said that California's newly passed net neutrality bill is "egregious," "radical, anti-consumer," and "illegal" in a speech on Friday. The bill, which was passed last month but has not yet been signed into law, enacts even stricter net neutrality rules than those the FCC recently overturned. But it goes up against at least one major blockade: a commission rule banning state net neutrality laws. Pai, naturally, believes the FCC's rule will stand up, which would make California's law illegal. He says that internet is an interstate service, so "it follows that only the federal government can set regulatory policy in this area." California legislators either believe this... |
Amazon reportedly planning Alexa microwave, subwoofer, and more this year Posted: 17 Sep 2018 02:27 PM PDT Amazon is planning to introduce as many as eight new Alexa-powered smart home devices later this year, according to a report from CNBC today. Those devices will be a wide-ranging offering of voice-controlled gadgets: a microwave oven, an in-car gadget of some sort, and a set of higher-end home audio gear, including an amplifier, receiver, and subwoofer. CNBC says Amazon is planning to detail at least some of these devices at an event some time later this month. Amazon's expansion into even more hardware categories will significantly heat up the smart home market, which is already flooded with Alexa-powered devices that either incorporate Amazon's voice assistant exclusively or offer it as one of four prominent options alongside Apple's... |
Tenor gets an iOS 12 update to offer in-camera stickers Posted: 17 Sep 2018 02:00 PM PDT Tenor, the GIF platform acquired by Google earlier this year, has launched an integration with the iOS 12 camera platform that allows you to search for and add stickers to photos and videos within the Messages app. It's a lot like an Instagram story or AR stickers from Giphy. The updated function allows for users to search stickers by keyword or within already-created "expression categories" like "kiss," "mindblown," or "hello." Once found, stickers can be dragged to the live camera view. Add as many stickers onto the live camera view as you'd like to decorate it before sending. To add stickers to your photos and videos with Tenor, download Tenor's GIF Keyboard app on iOS, open the iOS Messages app, and then the camera. From there, tap... |
Password Autofill in iOS 12 now works with 1Password, Dashlane, and LastPass Posted: 17 Sep 2018 01:33 PM PDT Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 12, was released to the public earlier today, and that means it's a great time to get well acquainted with some of its more useful new features. One of those is Password Autofill, a password manager tool that lets you store login credentials for the dozens of apps and services you likely access more on mobile today than ever before. Even better: Apple will let you import password data from third-party providers so you don't have to solely use its existing iCloud Keychain feature or give up using a trusted extension. Starting today with iOS 12's release, multiple services have released mobile updates that allow you to set them as Password Autofill's designated provider. Among the more popular... |
The best third-party Siri shortcuts you can try right now Posted: 17 Sep 2018 01:21 PM PDT Apple officially released iOS 12 today and with it came the release of its Shortcuts app. These shortcuts let users perform certain tasks with their apps through Siri voice commands. The idea behind shortcuts is to automate multi-step tasks. While Apple offers a variety of premade shortcuts, third-party app makers are also offering their own. More are sure to come soon since iOS 12 only just came out today, but for now, I've rounded up some of the best examples at launch. CityMapperThis shortcut is slightly confusing, as you have to set it up through CityMapper's app, not Shortcuts. Once in the updated app, tap the Siri icon to record your commands, like "Siri, check my commute," or "Hey Siri, get me home." You'll have to set your home... |
Instagram adds a shopping tab to the Explore page Posted: 17 Sep 2018 12:30 PM PDT Ahead of the launch of a standalone shopping app, Instagram is bringing more commerce to the flagship. The company said today that it will add a shopping tab to the Explore page, allowing you to thumb through a dedicated feed of shoppable merchandise from various sellers. As part of the launch, Instagram will let sellers add stickers to their ephemeral Stories for the first time, letting buyers make purchases from the Stories feed by tapping on merchandise. Shopping is an increasingly popular activity on Facebook-owned Instagram. The company said today that 90 million people a month tap posts to reveal shopping tags. More than 25 million businesses already have Instagram accounts, and 2 million of them advertise with Facebook, chief... |
