Apple just permanently banned Infowars from the App Store Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:07 PM PDT Only a day after Alex Jones was permanently banned from Twitter, the Infowars app — the final straw for Jones' platform — has been permanently kicked off the App Store, also permanently. Apple confirmed the removal with Buzzfeed by citing the App Store guidelines, which forbids "content that is offensive, insensitive, upsetting, intended to disgust, or in exceptionally poor taste." Searching for the app within the App Store right now only brings up other apps unrelated to Infowars. The snowball of Alex Jones' social media accounts being banned or removed for the world's biggest social networks has been building for a while now. Within the past month, Alex Jones' personal accounts or Infowars branded... |
Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma will retire from the company next week Posted: 07 Sep 2018 04:34 PM PDT Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma, China's richest person and the most instrumental builder of one of the country's most successful businesses, will retire from the company next week to focus on philanthropy, The New York Times reported Friday evening. Ma, who is 53 years old, started Alibaba in 1999 and helped grow it into a $420 billion business that has been instrumental in shaping how Chinese citizens purchase and pay for online goods. He owns a 6.4 percent stake in the company, giving him a net worth of more than $40 billion. Alibaba, largely seen as the Amazon of China, began as an online business-to-business marketplace, though it began to grow aggressively with the launch of the direct-to-consumer marketplace Taobao in 2003. The Air Force is determining ‘the appropriate process’ for Elon Musk smoking pot Posted: 07 Sep 2018 03:28 PM PDT After a full day of the internet intimately dissecting Elon Musk's pot use, reports began to surface that the US Air Force has opened an investigation into the Tesla and SpaceX CEO's drug habit, since SpaceX is a government launch provider. However, an Air Force official tells The Verge that those reports are premature and that the military hasn't figured out what it's going to do. "It's inaccurate that there is an investigation. We'll need time to determine the facts and the appropriate process to handle the situation," an Air Force spokesperson told The Verge. It's just one of hundreds of stories that have popped up in the aftermath of Musk smoking weed on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. And at first it makes some kind of sense:... |
Huawei will let all phone users access ‘performance mode’ after benchmark controversy Posted: 07 Sep 2018 02:49 PM PDT Huawei got caught cheating on benchmark tests, and now it's trying to make amends. Today the company announced that it'll let users force their phone into "performance mode," saying it respects "consumers' right to choose what to do with their devices." This optimizes their device to run faster, but requires more of the phone's power. Users will be able to do so starting with EMUI 9.0, a future version of Huawei's OS. This week, AnandTech exposed Huawei as optimizing its smartphones to over-perform on benchmark tests, specifically the 3DMark program. As such, 3DMark delisted the P20, P20 Pro, Nova 3, and Honor Play from its leaderboards. The phones were coded to detect this software and adjusted their performance accordingly. They didn't... |
Google’s Touring Bird is a travel tool to help vacationers find free activities in new cities Posted: 07 Sep 2018 02:46 PM PDT Google's incubator Area 120 is at it again with a new tool to help you find vacation activities. The tool, called Touring Bird, is a website designed for mobile that lists tours, attractions, and activities to do in popular travel destinations. You can filter by price from zero to over $500, time of day, duration, and even by cancellation policies, which sounds convenient. So far, the site only provides information for a handful of destinations, including Prague, Toronto, Orlando, Chicago, and Amsterdam. It looks like it's North America and Europe-centric so far. It's also only available in English, so tourists who prefer other languages won't find much utility from this site. If you click on cities... |
Experts warn against voting online, call for paper ballots instead Posted: 07 Sep 2018 02:13 PM PDT The United States isn't ready to hold elections online now or in the foreseeable future, a new report says. Not until the technology is good enough to ensure the votes are kept private and aren't tampered with. The recommendation is part of a massive new National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report that lays out dozens of recommendations for an election system the report calls "accessible, reliable, verifiable, and secure." A big one is to phase out voting machines that don't leave a paper trail, and only use paper ballots that humans can double-check — ideally by the 2018 midterm elections, but for sure by the presidential election in 2020. |
Apple says Watch, AirPods, and chargers will be more expensive under Trump tariffs Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:41 PM PDT Apple says the United States' latest round of proposed tariffs on China would affect a number of its up and coming products, including the Apple Watch, AirPods, and HomePod. The proposed tariffs would put a 25 percent tax either on the products themselves or on components within the products, raising the price on them and likely depressing sales as well. Several other products would also be hit, according to a letter submitted by Apple to the US Trade Representative earlier today. Apple says the Mac Mini, Pencil, its wireless mouse and trackpad, leather cases and covers, and some adapters, chargers, cables, and internal components would also be impacted by the tariffs. Ikea is working on smart blinds, according to FCC filing of new remote controls Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:33 PM PDT Ikea is ramping up its Tradfri line of smart home products, based on leaks of its $10 smart plug coming in October and the news of its upcoming smart blinds. Tech journalist Dave Zatz discovered the FCC filing yesterday for an open / close remote control that can be used to operate motorized smart blinds. Ikea's Tradfri line is currently limited to smart lighting products, but judging from these leaks, the company is quickly on its way to building an entire home automation system. Its affordability — not to mention compatibility with Apple's HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant — make it a formidable player in the smart home market. Motorized shades can be pricey, in the range of $300 to $400, and home automation kits to turn... |
Vizio may soon inform customers when its smart TVs are spying on them Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:19 PM PDT Vizio is apparently trying to figure out a way to inform its TV owners that it spies on their viewing habits. The Hollywood Reporter first spotted and reported that the company is developing a "notice program with direct notification to the class through Vizio Smart TV displays." The news popped up in a request to extend the time needed to submit a motion for a preliminary settlement in a class action lawsuit against the company. So basically, it's possible that Vizio users will get a pop-up notification that explains what the company is doing and when. The TV company already previously settled with the Federal Trade Commission for $2.2 million in 2017, along with the agreement to get users' consent before collecting data. The company... |
Here are all the phones with headphone jacks you can buy right now Posted: 07 Sep 2018 12:35 PM PDT It's notoriously difficult to find a smartphone with a headphone jack. Many manufacturers, from Apple to Google to Xiaomi, are omitting headphone jacks from their phones, instead opting for reversible ports like Lightning and USB-C. This is all despite the fact that living without a headphone jack makes it harder to do simple things like listening to music. It's tricky to find headphones that support the new ports, harder to find adapters that compensate for the lack of a 3.5mm audio jack, and even harder still to listen to music in a car if you don't want to go wireless. But it's not all bad news: despite the war on ports, new phones are being released with headphones jacks. There's a wide variety of phones ranging from high-end to... |
