The Razer Blade 15 family is expanding with a new dual-storage model and colorway Posted: 10 Oct 2018 08:00 PM PDT The Razer Blade 15 is a great gaming laptop for both work and play, but there's always room for improvement. Normally when a laptop gets a refresh, it means updating the existing model, but Razer has gone with something different by unveiling an alternate version called the Razer Blade 15 "Dual Storage Edition." It's called that because Razer included an SSD and a traditional hard drive, so you have two storage options. This isn't a remotely new feature in the laptop space, but in the case of the Blade 15, you're gaining a feature that heavier, bulkier gaming laptops usually have but with the benefit a 0.78-inch laptop's smaller footprint. However, the dual-storage Blade 15 is actually a newer, lower-end gaming laptop with the same... |
The Razer Phone 2 is poised to be the gaming phone to beat Posted: 10 Oct 2018 08:00 PM PDT Razer is introducing a new flagship smartphone, the Razer Phone 2, that's meant to establish a foothold in the new gaming phone market. I had the chance to spend some time with Razer's new flagship and found the new phone looks nearly identical to the first, but it has a new aluminum frame that has gone through a complete structural revamp. The Razer Phone 2 is meant to be a gaming phone, so there have also been relevant improvements made to the screen and audio, but also helpful additions that weren't in the phone last year, like waterproofing. Gaming phones are increasing in number, but not in maturity. Manufacturers that produce gaming computers — Razer and ASUS, for starters — are turning to phones because they're now able to... |
Will Hurricane Michael make Florida’s red tide better or worse? Posted: 10 Oct 2018 05:46 PM PDT When Hurricane Michael headed toward the Florida Panhandle, it churned up waters containing a toxic soup of algae called a red tide. For months, the red tide has been killing off sea creatures and wafting toxins towards land — and nobody really knows whether the storm will finally end the bloom, or fuel it even further. Now the big question is what will happen to the red tide in the wake of the hurricane, as Quartz first reported. The storm could churn the water enough to break up the algae bloom and disperse the cells, says Tracy Fanara, an environmental engineer at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida. That's what she suspects will happen in the Florida Panhandle, where Hurricane Michael made landfall. But the hurricane... |
Please don’t shred your own Banksy print unless you want it to be worth £1 Posted: 10 Oct 2018 03:52 PM PDT Last week, a framed copy of Banksy's famous "Girl with Balloon" work self-shredded just moments after being auctioned for $1.4 million at Sotheby's. The shredding (which some speculate Sotheby's was in on) transformed the print into performance art, which then made it the most expensive piece of performance art ever sold at auction. But there's more. Because the shredding was an intentional decision by the artist, it may be worth double what it sold for. It's no longer one of many "Girl with Balloon" prints, but a one-of-a-kind Banksy performance piece. This is all to say... don't shred your own Banksy prints and expect to get the same results. Unfortunately, this is a warning that has already been given but apparently ignored. On... |
The Defense Department picks three companies to develop rockets for national security launches Posted: 10 Oct 2018 03:34 PM PDT The US Air Force has awarded three aerospace companies with a combined $2 billion in contracts to develop rockets capable of sending national security satellites into orbit for the US government: the United Launch Alliance, Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin. However, SpaceX — a current launch provider for the Defense Department — was not on the list. The awards are part of the DOD's coveted Launch Service Agreement, or LSA. The goal of the program is to aid the development of commercial rockets and ensure that the US government has constant access to space for its national security payloads. The Defense Department says it will eventually select two of the awardees to be official launch providers... |
Microsoft is now a top five PC maker in the US thanks to Surface Posted: 10 Oct 2018 03:14 PM PDT Microsoft has broken into the top five PC makers in the US for the first time. Market research firm Gartner revealed today that Microsoft now holds 4.1 percent of the US PC market, edging out Acer for the fifth spot. It's the first time Microsoft has entered the top five in the US, thanks to the company's Surface devices. While Microsoft has secured this top spot in the US, the company still has some work to do before that position is replicated worldwide. Both Acer and Asus are jostling for the fifth spot worldwide, with Lenovo leading across the world. Gartner and IDC both agree that Lenovo is the top PC maker, but the two research firms provide differing estimates for shipments overall. Gartner says PC shipments increased by 0.1... |
Amazon is raising some workers’ pay further after controversy Posted: 10 Oct 2018 02:58 PM PDT Amazon will further raise a planned wage increase for some workers, and will offer bonuses as a replacement for previous compensation plans, after controversy over changes to employee payment, according to Bloomberg. The company announced last week that it would begin paying all of its employees at least $15 per hour, but the plan soon led to backlash from some workers, who said that cutting certain incentives, like monthly bonuses and stock options, would lead them to earn less overall. Now, as first reported by Bloomberg, Amazon is making some changes to the initial plan. First, a planned increase of $1 for workers already making $15 per hour will increase to an additional $1.25 per hour for some... |
Bollinger Motors teases a rugged electric pickup truck with 200 miles of range Posted: 10 Oct 2018 02:57 PM PDT Bollinger Motors, a small EV startup from New York, has announced a followup to the eye-catching all-electric B1 SUV that debuted last year. The small company's next electric vehicle is a pickup truck called the B2, which will offer about three extra feet of length for storing more stuff in the bed. The B2 will be built on the same technological platform as the B1, which means it will feature the same promising specs Bollinger took aim at with last year's B1. That means it will be powered by a 120kWh battery pack that can last for about 200 miles. Dual motors — one on each axle — combine for around 520 horsepower, and the truck can go from 0-60mph in less than seven seconds. And it will take 75 minutes for a full charge on a DC fast... |
Leaked Google research shows company grappling with censorship and free speech Posted: 10 Oct 2018 02:56 PM PDT A leaked research presentation put together by employees of Google shows the extent to which the search giant is grappling with decisions around freedom of speech and censorship. The presentation, leaked to Breitbart News this week and published in full by the organization, is titled "The Good Censor," and it's a mix of findings and insights based on interviews and contributions from a number of journalists, academics, and cultural critics. The aim, according to the first slide of the presentation, is to "reassure the world that [Google] protects users from harmful conduct while still supporting free speech." The slides are a rare and stark look at Google's ongoing struggles, which are mirrored by many Silicon Valley tech platforms,... |
Google will let users hide the Pixel 3 XL’s giant notch with a software black bar Posted: 10 Oct 2018 02:00 PM PDT After weeks of leaks, Google officially announced the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones yesterday, but one part of the updated device isn't sitting well with users: the giant camera notch on the front of the XL variant. Fortunately, for the notch-averse out there, it seems that Google will offer an option to hide the notch by blacking out the entire top portion of the display, via Gizmodo.
It's an option we've seen offered on a variety of other notched Android phones, including those from LG, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Huawei. But it's nice to see Google offer the option... |
