The Garmin Instinct is a rugged smartwatch for outdoor activities Posted: 11 Oct 2018 03:44 PM PDT Garmin just announced a new GPS watch called Instinct, built for endurance when worn during outdoor activities like running or mountain biking. Instinct comes with a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter, and multiple global navigation satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo). Support for multiple navigation systems allows the watch to track a user's location even in more remote environments. It also uses Garmin's TracBack feature, which sets "digital breadcrumbs" as you travel and can navigate you back to your starting point. The Instinct also comes with heart rate sensors and monitors other health markers like daily activity, calories burned, sleep, and stress (measured through heart rate variability). There's also a variety of... |
Leak shows a new Nokia phone returning to Verizon Posted: 11 Oct 2018 03:19 PM PDT According to VentureBeat's Evan Blass, HMD Global is bringing its mid-range Nokia devices back to the US through a partnership with Verizon. The Nokia brand has seen a sizable amount of success across Europe under its new owner, and possibly enough to tempt them to dip their toes back into the US mid-range Android market. Blass put out a tweet early this morning containing a leak of the new HMD-built device, calling it the Nokia 2.1V and making it out to be a carbon copy of last year's Nokia 2.1, but with support from Verizon Wireless. If that's the case, it will more than likely have a 5.5-inch display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 425 and an 8MP camera on the back. Although the leaked device doesn't prove that a swath of Nokia phones will be... |
We spoke to the actual designer behind Kanye West’s iPlane pitch to the president Posted: 11 Oct 2018 03:12 PM PDT Earlier today, Kanye West made headlines in a meeting with Donald Trump, revealing a concept for an Apple-made, hydrogen-powered "iPlane 1" that the rapper wanted to replace Air Force One with (along with his phone password). The only problem: the "iPlane 1" is neither a secret Apple product nor an original Kanye idea. Instead, it's a concept piece that was part of industrial designer Shabtai Hirshberg's 2012 master's thesis project imagining the future of air travel in 2030. Speaking to The Verge, Hirshberg explained that he had no idea that Kanye was using his art. "No, it completely caught me by surprise. A good surprise, I would say — it's always nice to see your designs being thought well for," Hirshberg said. |
Kanye West gave an impromptu ‘keynote’ atop an Apple Store table in Georgetown Posted: 11 Oct 2018 03:03 PM PDT Following his widely publicized meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House this morning, Kanye West proceeded to make an appearance at the Apple Store located less than a mile from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Though it's unclear exactly what West was doing at the Apple Store — some local reports have him there for a Genius Bar appointment, but that remains unverified — he did proceed to stand on top of one of Apple's signature wooden tables to deliver an impromptu "keynote." Jack Jenkins, a reporter for Religion News Service, was in attendance to capture the moment with his phone and share it on Twitter. Jenkins says West told the crowd an anecdote about having made a custom hat for Trump with an edited version... |
Mercedes-Benz wants to make the 2020 S-Class partially autonomous Posted: 11 Oct 2018 02:19 PM PDT Mercedes-Benz plans to debut its own semi-autonomous system on the refreshed S-Class sedan, due in the 2020 lineup, according to an Automotive News interview with the company's head of research. The system will offer what the Society of Automotive Engineers refers to as "Level 3" autonomy, which means the car can drive itself in certain situations without any driver input, with the caveat that said driver needs to be ready to take over in case of an emergency. This kind of driver assistance package would be on par with what Audi built into the 2019 A8. Audi's system — called Traffic Jam Pilot — handles starts, stops, turns, and more while allowing the driver to take their eyes off the road. It would be a step ahead of other current... |
Google Translate can now visually translate 13 more languages Posted: 11 Oct 2018 02:08 PM PDT Starting this week, the Google Translate app will be capable of visually translating 13 new languages by using the camera on your smartphone, according to a report from VentureBeat. In 2015, Google added the visual translation feature to the Translate app with the support of 27 different languages. It allows users to translate dinner menus and signs in real time, making communicating abroad much easier. This week's announcement adds Punjabi, Bengali, Vietnamese, Thai, Gujarati, Kannada, Nepali, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam, putting the total number of supported languages close to 50. Users can access the feature in the Translate app by navigating to the camera icon on the home screen. The app will then prompt you to line up the text... |
Instagram is testing tapping through posts instead of scrolling Posted: 11 Oct 2018 02:07 PM PDT Instagram is testing a new way to advance through photos, by tapping through posts like you would on Stories, it was reported by TechCrunch. Tapping through posts is meant to eliminate the supposedly cumbersome experience of scrolling, while also displaying the entirety of every post in one tap. The test is currently only being conducted in the Explore tab, with no plans to be implemented in the main feed yet. It's also not known how widely the test will be rolling out. Instagram user Suprateek Bose took a screenshot of the feature, which could be a quicker way to move through Explore posts. Given that the Explore tab usually shows posts the algorithm determines is relevant to you, it's likely that you could be tapping through Instagram... |
Facebook disables accounts tied to Russian company that allegedly scraped user data Posted: 11 Oct 2018 01:32 PM PDT Facebook has disabled accounts operated by a Russian business that the social network says scraped user data from its platform. The Russian company, SocialDataHub, advertises insights through publicly available information. According to Facebook, that includes information gleaned from its users. "As part of our efforts to protect people's security, we have recently removed Social Data Hub (SDH), a Russian-linked social media firm, because they were scraping people's information," a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. "This is a violation of our terms of service, and we've disabled more than 66 of SDH's accounts, profiles, Pages, and apps from our service — and we expect to find and... |
Thieves are using Apple IDs to steal money, Chinese payment firms say Posted: 11 Oct 2018 01:07 PM PDT China's two largest digital payments services, Alipay and WeChat Pay, have warned that thieves are using compromised Apple IDs to make purchases with people's accounts. Alipay posted a warning offering "security tips about Apple phones," which said that it had contacted Apple many times with hope of solving the issue, according to Reuters. Tencent, which owns WeChat Pay, later confirmed similar issues in a statement to Bloomberg. "Since Apple hasn't resolved this issue, users who've linked their Apple ID to any payments method, including Alipay, WePay, or credit cards, may be vulnerable to theft," Alipay wrote, according to Bloomberg's translation. It's not stated how widespread the issue... |
Grado’s first wireless headphones are now available for $249 Posted: 11 Oct 2018 12:57 PM PDT There's no topping wired audio, but high-end headphone makers are doing their best to get the most out of Bluetooth. As the latest example of this, Grado is now shipping its $249 GW100 headphones. These are Grado's first wireless headphones. As with the rest of the company's lineup, these are open-back headphones — so you're not going to want to use them for commuting on the subway or in noisy surroundings. Grado says these are the first open-back Bluetooth headphones on the market. It's a mixture that doesn't seem ideal for all listening situations, but the open-back design allows for a wide soundstage and greater detail, according to the company. "Some might think wireless and open-back are an odd pairing, but now you can enjoy... |
