New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says Amazon shouldn’t be receiving tax breaks for HQ2

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 04:06 PM PST

The latest high-profile public figure to criticize the deal New York made with Amazon to bring half of the company's new headquarters to Long Island City, Queens is none other than New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Announced on Tuesday, Amazon ended a months-long search for a second headquarters by choosing to expand two existing satellite offices in New York City and Arlington, Virginia, disappointing the hundreds of cities and regions in the US that vied to secure the promised 50,000 jobs and the income tax and infrastructure spending it could bring with it.

Alongside fellow New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, Gillibrand was silent all yesterday and today following the announcement while backlash built against the decision to cut Amazon more...

Google Maps will let you chat with businesses

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 03:55 PM PST

Earlier today, 9to5Google pointed us to a blog post from Google announcing a new feature for Google Maps: messaging businesses. After it rolls out to iPhone and Android users, there will be a new "messages" button on the left-hand slide out drawer that lets you message the businesses you find in Google Maps.

A business that wants to participate will need to use Google's "My Business" verification system and its associated app to send and receive messages. That app was just overhauled, as Adweek notes — making it more of a one-stop shop for small businesses to update their information for Google and to chat with customers.

I'm just going to tell you right now that I have several conflicting feelings about this new feature and we're...

An Italian volcano’s massive eruptions fit a pattern — and the cycle may have restarted

A view across the Campi Flegrei caldera.

New research indicates that a volcano near Naples, Italy might be in the early stages of gearing up for an eruption large enough to change the area's landscape.

The study, published today in Science Advances, may be of particular interest to the 1.5 million people living within the bounds of the volcanic complex. Fortunately for them, there's no indication that this massive event will happen any time soon. Volcanic eruptions like this can take thousands of years to develop, and there's no way for volcanologists to tell when, or even if, this particular type of eruption will occur. Still, it's a fascinating and rare look at the innards of one of the most dramatic phenomena on Earth.

In the study, researchers found that molten rock...

Instagram starts rolling out dashboard that shows how much time you spend on it

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 02:42 PM PST

Back in August, Facebook and Instagram announced they would introduce new activity dashboards that tracked how much time users spent inside the apps, but the features never materialized. Now, Instagram has finally started rolling out its own "Your Activity" feature, which includes tools for setting daily time limits and the option to temporarily mute push notifications. The feature can be found inside the hamburger icon on the upper right corner of your profile page, and from there it's found under "Your Activity."

Along with Apple introducing Screen Time on iOS and Google releasing a Digital Wellness dashboard with Android 9.0, tech companies are thinking about helping users better manage their time using apps.

Mark Zuckerberg ordered all Facebook executives to use Android phones

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 02:42 PM PST

Mark Zuckerberg with an Android phone.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg ordered his management team to only use Android phones, given that the operating system has more total users worldwide. According to The New York Times, the decision reportedly occurred after Apple CEO Tim Cook criticized Facebook in an MSNBC interview for being a service that traffics "in your personal life."

In those comments made back in March, Cook dismissed a question asking him what he would do if he were in Zuckerberg's shoes dealing with the fallout from the Cambridge Analytica scandal by saying, "I wouldn't be in this situation." Zuckerberg soon after retorted in an interview with Recode that he found Cook's comments to be "extremely glib," and that "I think it's important that we don't all get...

The iPhone X can be hacked to pull your recently deleted files

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 02:13 PM PST

Two hackers have collected a bounty of $50,000 for finding an exploit in the iPhone X that lets you recover a previously deleted photo or file. During a mobile contest where hackers located bugs in iOS and Android, two hackers Richard Zhu and Amat Cama uncovered the vulnerability today and presented it in a demo. So far, Apple has been notified about the bug but it remains accessible at least until the next iOS update, as first reported by Forbes.

While the attack requires some access to the target device, researchers believe it could be deployed through a malicious Wi-Fi access point, putting it within reach for many attackers.

When you delete a photo on the iPhone X, iOS first prompts you with "This photo will be deleted from iCloud...

The Nokia 106 feature phone has a 1.8-inch screen that’s perfect for Snake

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST

HMD Global has announced the Nokia 106, an affordable feature phone destined for the global market. The 106 has a 1.8-inch, 160x120 display that's a perfect match for the built-in Snake game. (You'll have to pay for others, though demos are included.) The phone can store up to 2000 contacts, and retain up to 500 SMS messages. Yes, these are the highlights advertised for a device like this.

HMD says the battery lasts "from sunrise to sunset with one charge," which is something I'd honestly expect from a feature phone. That all-day battery life — 15.7 hours, to be specific — is for active use; the battery "lasts weeks" on standby. That's 21.9 days, according to the spec sheet. If you want to use this thing solely as an FM radio, it'll...

PewDiePie’s fans are fighting hard to ensure he remains the biggest YouTuber

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:42 PM PST

Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg has spent years as the biggest YouTuber on the video platform, so now that an Indian music channel called T-Series threatens to take the throne, the world is paying close attention to the man's subscriber count. While T-Series' YouTube dominance is likely just a matter of time, Kjellberg's fans have gone into overdrive to make the overthrow take as long as possible. The fight has spilled out into the real world, thanks to a number of grassroots campaigns to raise awareness of Kjellberg's channel.

The most high-profile advertising campaign for Kjellberg's channel happened late last month, when YouTuber Mr. Beast transformed his entire city into a PewDiePie ad. The YouTuber, who regularly gives away huge swaths...

Politicians and protestors are looking for ways to stop Amazon’s New York HQ2

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:22 PM PST

When New York's governor and New York City's mayor appeared alongside an Amazon executive yesterday to announce Amazon's HQ2 setting up shop in the city, the mood was celebratory. But some locals are pushing back and considering what would need to happen to scuttle the deal.

Amazon's decision to build a new facility in Long Island City, Queens, as well as in Northern Virginia, has been met with stiff resistance. Two local politicians, State Sen. Michael Gianaris and City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, have said an "unprecedented amounts of tax dollars" will be going to Amazon through tax incentive offers.

"Too much is at stake to accept this without a fight," the two said in a...

Faraday Future employees sue investor over ‘conspiracy’ to destroy the EV startup

Posted: 14 Nov 2018 01:09 PM PST

The battle between ailing electric car startup Faraday Future and its main investor, Chinese real estate giant Evergrande, escalated once again on Wednesday. Employees of the startup filed suit against Evergrande in Los Angeles County Superior Court, claiming the Chinese conglomerate committed "breaches" of its fiduciary duties as well as "other illegal conduct." The plaintiffs also say Evergrande "plotted" from the beginning to send Faraday Future "off a financial cliff" in order to make off with the intellectual property associated with the startup's forthcoming luxury electric vehicle, the FF91.

"If [Evergrande's] conspiracy is allowed to come to fruition," Faraday Future employees — many of whom have a stake in the company — will...
