Farewell to the Steam Link, the best wireless HDMI gadget ever made Posted: 19 Nov 2018 04:43 PM PST Why am I sad that a tiny black puck which streamed games over a Wi-Fi network will soon disappear from shelves around the world? Because too few people experienced the magic that the Steam Link affords. Over the past couple years, it seemed like PC gaming juggernaut Valve couldn't give away the gadget fast enough, charging as little as $2.50 for the $50 gadget on sale. That's probably why the company is quietly discontinuing the device today, though the company will continue support. (Valve says the Steam Link is already selling out around the world, and when it's gone, it's gone.) My pet theory? The Steam Link was just too an tough idea to get every PC gamer's head around. The little black box beams PC games to your TV through the power... |
Chromecasts now support multi-room music playback Posted: 19 Nov 2018 03:57 PM PST Chromecasts can now be used to play music in sync across multiple rooms and devices. Engadget reports that an update rolling out today allows Chromecasts to be added to speaker groups, a handy feature for those who want to combine multiple Google Cast-compatible devices for simultaneous audio streaming. Previously, speaker groups could only be made with audio devices, meaning the standard Chromecast was excluded. Google announced that support for speaker groups was coming to the Chromecast back in October, so it was just a matter of time until it was rolled out. The feature appears to be available now for users who signed up for Google's preview program, and works on all generations of Chromecast. XDA Developers reported that some who... |
Apple really wants you to think the iPad Pro is a computer Posted: 19 Nov 2018 03:15 PM PST Apple insists that the iPad Pro is a computer — not just a tablet. In its new advertisement for the iPad Pro, Apple says the device "can be your next computer," is "more powerful than most computers," and flat out that it is "a computer." Still, while enthusiasts have been ready to embrace the iPad as a computer for years, it's yet to grow into a fully fledged one and still faces restrictions that a normal "computer" does not. Whether the iPad Pro can replace your computer is a question that reviewers have repeatedly asked, but it's new to see Apple take this angle in its marketing materials. Previous ads about iPads, including the infamous "What's a computer?" ad were about how tablets are different from computers and are the device of... |
Work on Telltale’s The Walking Dead resumes with ‘many’ original developers Posted: 19 Nov 2018 02:44 PM PST The latest chapter in the ongoing Telltale Games saga finally involves a bit of good news: developer Skybound Games, which picked up the rights to the dissolved developer's The Walking Dead series, says it has brought back "many of the talented, passionate team members who originally worked on the game" to finish its final season. Release dates for the remaining content will be announced some time soon. Development on the final two episodes of the final season began today, writes Johnny O'Dell, the social media manager for The Walking Dead comic series, in a blog post published today on Skybound's website. O'Dell also confirmed that the series' games would be returning shortly to online stores, after Telltale's recent bankruptcy... |
The best gaming deals this Black Friday include discounts on PS4 Slim, Xbox One X, and new games Posted: 19 Nov 2018 01:03 PM PST There's no better time to take the plunge on a new game console or finally pick up a game you've been reading and watching YouTube videos about for months than Black Friday. Typically, every major retailer, as well as the game publishers and console makers, has a handful of solid deals on hardware, software, and accessories. This year, there are especially good deals on Sony's PlayStation 4 Slim, the whole Xbox lineup, and a number of the year's biggest games. The current console generation's life cycle is projected to come to a close around 2020, which makes this year's deals especially attractive, considering the devices likely won't see another equally dramatic price drop until the formal announcement of Microsoft and Sony's new... |
Pre-Black Friday deal alert: Ring Video Doorbell 2 and Echo Dot for $140 Posted: 19 Nov 2018 12:23 PM PST My favorite Black Friday deals to recommend are the ones I can't resist buying myself — and that's exactly what happened when I saw that Best Buy is selling the Ring Video Doorbell 2 plus a free third-gen Echo Dot smart speaker for $140 right now. Normally, it's $200 for the doorbell and $50 for the speaker, so that's effectively $110 off. Mind you, we have seen the Ring Video Doorbell 2 hit $110 by its lonesome, but only once before. You'll also need to log in to a My Best Buy account to get the $140 price ahead of Black Friday, but it's free to sign up. For the price, you're getting one of the best doorway-mounted security camera and new-package-notification systems out there, with some key upgrades over the original Ring (which can... |
The Walking Dead finds its groove without Rick Grimes Posted: 19 Nov 2018 12:08 PM PST At times, the latest season of AMC's The Walking Dead has felt muddled, as if new showrunner Angela Kang was confused about what she wanted the show to be. Is she making a daring drama that surprises audiences with fearless storytelling decisions, or continuing the stunts that have defined the last few seasons? Does she want to improve on the comic-book morality of the long-running comic series, or is she more interested in treading water and setting up an upcoming Rick Grimes movie trilogy? But last night's episode, "Stradivarius," offered the clearest example yet of what she has in mind for her reworked version of the series. With Rick's departure out of the way, The Walking Dead was able to dig into its new characters, explore the... |
Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 drops to $799 in time for Black Friday 2018 Posted: 19 Nov 2018 11:26 AM PST If you're looking for a discount on a powerful Android phone, Samsung is discounting its entire 2018 phone lineup, which includes the Galaxy Note 9, S9, and S9 Plus. Each model is currently $200 off of its usual cost, and those prices will last through Cyber Monday (November 26th). This means the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is $799 right now at several retailers, including Amazon, Samsung, and B&H Photo. This deal comes with no caveats. It's an immediate discount, not credits on your bill as with most mobile deals these days. And you can use the phone with any wireless carrier. The 512GB model is $1,049, which is just $50 more than the 128GB Note 9 usually costs. For those who want to spend less, the Samsung Galaxy S9 with 64GB of storage is... |
Google Pixels will get transcription support for call screenings before the end of the year Posted: 19 Nov 2018 11:24 AM PST Google's AI call screening feature, which came with the Pixel 3 at launch and is now rolling out to older Pixel phones, will soon get transcription support, reports 9to5Google. The feature, which allows Google Assistant to pick up suspected spam calls before letting users decide if they want to answer, will be able to save transcriptions of phone calls later this year. Currently, when Google Assistant picks up a spam call, users can only watch transcriptions in real time as the conversation is happening. Once the call is over, there's no way for a user to revisit the conversation. A Call Screen product manager on Google's support forums confirmed last week that the feature will be launching later this year, and transcripts will be... |
NASA will send its rover to a Martian delta to look for signs of ancient life Posted: 19 Nov 2018 11:19 AM PST NASA scientists selected the spot on Mars where they plan to land their next rover in 2020 — a region that was likely an ancient river delta on the Red Planet. The spacecraft will aim to touch down in Jezero Crater, an area that may have been habitable billions of years ago. NASA took particular care in selecting this spot to explore; someday, samples collected by the rover could be returned to Earth for study. This new rover is the successor to the last one that NASA landed on Mars in 2012, known as Curiosity. That robot has been exploring a region on Mars known as Gale Crater, a spot that also was a lot wetter in the past than it is today. Curiosity has learned a great deal about its little slice of Mars over the last six years. It... |
