The best PC gaming deals on Cyber Monday 2018

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 05:12 PM PST

If it's time to upgrade your gaming PC, there's no better time of the year than Cyber Monday. (Yes, we just said that about Black Friday, but it's basically the same thing.) It's the shopping season when manufacturers throw out deep discounts on laptops, desktops, components, and peripherals; and when stores like Amazon, Best Buy and Newegg sometimes compete to make those discounts even deeper.

Every year's different — neither Black Friday or Cyber Monday hosted amazing deals on processors or PC memory — but this year, the solid state drive (SSD) sales are pretty phenomenal. If you're still running Windows off a traditional spinning magnetic hard drive, well... just trust us, it'll make your entire PC feel like new.

To the deals list!

Romaine lettuce from California linked to E. coli outbreak

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 05:04 PM PST

Romaine lettuce contaminated with E. coli is making people sick again, and now, the Food and Drug Administration has a better idea of where it's coming from: investigators working over Thanksgiving traced the tainted lettuce back to the Central Coast growing region of California. The FDA now says we're clear to eat romaine grown in other regions. But if you're craving a caesar salad after last week's produce purge and can't tell where the romaine's from, don't buy it.

E. coli naturally hangs out in animal guts — and many strains aren't harmful to people when ingested. But the strain involved in this latest outbreak, E. coli O157:H7, produces dangerous toxins and can cause kidney failure. So far, 43 people in the US and 22 people in...

Facebook confirms years-old messages are randomly coming back to haunt users

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 04:08 PM PST

Facebook users are reporting one of the stranger bugs to plague the platform of late: years-old Messenger threads resurfacing automatically, without context or explanation. First reported by users on Twitter, the company now confirms that older messages are being treated as new, unread ones and popping up in the Messenger tab on Facebook.com. The explanation, however, remains elusive.

"Some people are seeing older messages on Facebook.com. We are aware of the issue and are actively working to resolve it in as soon as possible," a Facebook spokesperson tells The Verge. "We apologize for the inconvenience."

Some have expressed concern that the bug could resurface conversations or past histories they would much rather forget. Unless you...

Trump says consumers ‘could stand’ 10 percent tariff on iPhones

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:50 PM PST

President Trump has told The Wall Street Journal he expects tariffs to be placed on all Chinese imports, including items like iPhones. This could boost the cost of an iPhone by 10 percent, a hike which Trump believes would not be a problem. "People could stand that very easily," Trump told the Journal.

The news comes four days ahead of a summit between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. China's top priority for the summit is to try to persuade the US to not implement a planned tariff increase that's set to kick in on January 1st, which would raise existing tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent. Trump says Beijing's request to hold off on this increase is "highly unlikely."

Google Play-promoted Android apps are using scammy ad practices, report says

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 03:35 PM PST

Eight Android apps with more than 2 billion downloads in the Google Play store have been engaging in fraudulent ad practices, BuzzFeed News reported today. Seven of the apps are owned by Cheetah Mobile, a publicly-traded Chinese company, and one app is owned by Kika Tech, a Chinese company headquartered in Silicon Valley. The two companies have been found to abuse app permissions in order to monitor new downloads and hijack app-install bounties that could range in the millions of dollars, according to app analytics firm Kochava.

While the scheme involved monitoring users' behavior, it was ultimately used to rip off app developers, who pay a fee to partners when they drive users to install new apps. In a normal installation process,...

Microsoft is discounting the Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, and Xbox One for Cyber Monday

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 02:39 PM PST

Microsoft is offering much of its Surface lineup of PCs at a discount for Cyber Monday. What's perhaps better than an outright deal is that most of these Surface promotions come bundled with a Type Cover, giving whoever receives it as a gift more versatility out of the box than these Windows 10 machines usually offer. You'll also find deals on laptops made by the likes of HP, Dell, and others, along with some appealing discounts on all things Xbox.

We'll be adding and removing deals to reflect what's currently available.

LG patent hints at a 16-lens smartphone camera

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 02:38 PM PST

Phone cameras are an arms race of sorts, and LG might be looking to escalate things dramatically with a future phone that could feature a whopping 16 lenses, via LetsGoDigital.

Multiple lenses on cameras isn't exactly new — over the last year, we've seen phones with two and three rear lenses break into the mass marketplace, along with rumors of a larger five-lens device from Nokia, and even a potential nine-camera smartphone prototype from the multi-lens startup Light. But LG's patent would look to go far beyond even that, with a full 16-camera array.

Unlike most multiple-camera systems, though — including ones like LG's V40 ThinQ, which offered different types of camera lenses for different effects on the same shot — the goal of the...

The Moto G7 Play will have a notch and a much smaller battery

Posted: 26 Nov 2018 02:31 PM PST

Unfortunately for Motorola, its unreleased Moto G7 Play has completely leaked — all thanks to the FCC. Truly everything about the phone is now available through the agency, including the device's manual, images of its exterior and interior, and technical details. Maybe the biggest news, though, is that this latest iteration to the midrange G series line features a notch. We can't escape it, not that we really thought we could.

The notch houses a front-facing camera, flash, and speaker, per the manual. It isn't clear whether there will be some sort of face-recognition feature. The phone also includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor, which would be a step up from last year's 400 series chip.

Other hardware features include a headphone...
