Eight people charged with running a multimillion-dollar online ad scam Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:31 PM PST The Department of Justice has unsealed indictments against eight people who allegedly ran the infamous online advertising scams 3ve and Methbot. The defendants, who are primarily from Russia, are accused of collecting more than $36 million from companies who thought they were paying to place ads on websites. But the ads were never seen by a human being — instead, the defendants allegedly used a server farm and a botnet to simulate billions of visits to real pages. A press release states that three of the alleged scammers — Sergey Ovsyannikov and Yevgeniy Timchenko, who were from Kazakhstan, and Aleksandr Zhukov, who was Russian — were arrested over the past month. The other five — Boris Timokhin, Mikhail Andreev, Denis Avdeev, Dmitry... |
DriveSavers claims it has a way to break into locked iPhones with 100 percent success Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:01 PM PST Data recovery company DriveSavers is advertising a new service that claims it can recover sensitive data from a locked smartphone, including notably difficult-to-crack iOS devices. The company's service, called Passcode Lockout Data Recovery, is advertised for regular consumers and not seemingly designed for law enforcement or any other type of official cybersecurity business. Yet The Verge was unable to directly verify the efficacy of the tool, and the offer goes against many promises made by Apple about the security of its storage. "The first-of-its-kind service is being offered exclusively to consumers who have forgotten device passwords, been locked out after too many incorrect attempts, and for those who need access to data stored... |
Amazon will reportedly sell software that reads medical records Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:51 PM PST Amazon reportedly plans to start selling software that can read medical records and make suggestions for improving treatment or saving money, according to The Wall Street Journal. The program scans medical files to pick out relevant information such as the medical condition and patient's procedures and prescriptions. While other algorithms that try to do the same thing have been stymied by doctors' abbreviations, Amazon claims to have trained its system to recognize the idiosyncrasies in how doctors take notes, sources told the WSJ. The company had already developed and sold this same software to other businesses, including ones focused on travel booking and customer service. For Amazon, this is another move into the health care market... |
Apple fixes iCloud to work better with Windows 10 October Update Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:42 PM PST Apple just updated iCloud for Windows to version 7.8.1 today, which seems to fix compatibility issues users were reporting between iCloud and Windows 10's October Update, as spotted by 9to5Mac. For the past few weeks, users had been reporting seeing an error message and failed installations if they tried to upgrade iCloud for Windows on a Windows 10 machine running the October patch. Many users who already had iCloud prior to the update have encountered bugs such as trouble with syncing photos. Microsoft and Apple quickly said they were working on a "compatible version" to fix the issues. Before today's release, Microsoft had been blocking users from performing the October Update if it detected the older iCloud software installed. Apple... |
Sprint and HTC are partnering to make a 5G device for next year Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:33 PM PST Sprint is partnering with HTC to make a mobile "smart hub" that will run on 5G next year. It's the second product Sprint has announced for its own nascent next-gen network, but we're getting very little in the way of concrete details right now. The device is developed by Sprint, HTC, and Qualcomm in a joint effort. It will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon x50 5G modem with gigabit LTE and 5G capabilities. The device will come to US customers sometime in the first half of 2019. A smart hub seems to imply the device could be used as a mobile hot spot. In August, Sprint announced that it was working with LG to release a 5G smartphone for its in-progress network, also within the first half of 2019. Sprint plans to first launch its 5G service... |
Spotify plans to expand into India within the next six months Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:22 PM PST Spotify will be expanding into India, possibly within the next six months, according to Variety. Bloomberg confirmed the launch with unnamed sources who say the streaming service has recently cleared deals with many, but not all, of the major rights holders in India. This will bring the streaming service to one of the world's biggest and fastest growing music markets — with a population of 1.3 billion — and raise the number of markets it's available in to 78. When Spotify arrives in India, it will offer a trial period for full access that's longer than the company's standard 30 days, according to Variety. Although streaming services are used by about 100 million people in India, only a small number opt to pay for them. Bloomberg notes... |
Red Dead Online’s early hours are full of violence, beauty, and annoying griefers Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:18 PM PST During the earliest moments of Red Dead Online, the multiplayer spinoff of Red Dead Redemption 2, you could almost mistake it for a traditional single-player experience. It has all of the series' hallmarks: tense shootouts; long, quiet rides on horseback; lengthy, well-acted cutscenes; and an open-ended nature that gives a real sense of freedom out in the frontier. You can sit down by a fire and drink some coffee, or you can go hunting for deer in the woods. It's up to you. But that feeling doesn't last forever. There's a good chance that while you're enjoying one those nice contemplative moments, or even doing something simple like checking your map, another player is sneaking up behind you for the kill. Red Dead Online feels just like R... |
Rivian’s R1S SUV looks like an all-electric Land Rover Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:00 PM PST One day after unveiling its first vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show — an electric pickup truck called the R1T — Michigan-based automotive startup Rivian is already following up with a second. Built on the same platform as the pickup, Rivian's second vehicle will be a seven-passenger SUV in a style that sits somewhere between a Land Rover and Jeep's more rugged offerings. Due in late 2020, the R1S will be slightly more expensive than Rivian's pickup truck when it goes on sale, with the base model starting at $72,500. Preorders start this week, with a refundable $1,000 deposit required. Other than its shape, the R1S (as the SUV is called) mostly matches the R1T pickup truck... |
Apple is boosting the trade-in value of old iPhones Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:00 PM PST Apple skipped on offering much in the way of must-have discounts for Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but today it launched a significant boost to trade-in credit for older iPhones. The amount you're getting probably still isn't equal to what you'd make by selling on Craigslist or elsewhere, but Apple's option is all about convenience. It's worth noting that this promotion is only open for those who are upgrading to the 2018 iPhone lineup, meaning the XS, XS Max, or XR. (That's one way to increase demand.) Exactly how much more trade-in credit you'll receive depends on the phone you're handing over:

Samsung’s new line of 860 QVO SSDs offers big storage at an appealing price Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:50 AM PST Samsung just revealed its new solid state drive (SSD) lineup that has up to 4TB of storage capacity. The new Samsung 860 QVO SSDs are meant for PC users with large storage needs who don't want to break the bank; the smallest option offers 1TB for $150. There's also a 2TB version in the middle. The new line promises excellent performance for the price. The 860 QVO SSD is built on Samsung's 4-bit multi-level cell flash architecture and has a 2.5-inch form factor to fit into most laptops and desktops. The 860 QVO has an MJX controller that can push read speeds up to 550 Mb/s and write speeds of up to 520 Mb/s. That's not quite as fast as the 860 Pro series, but you're spending considerable less money. (The 1TB 860 Pro costs $300.) The 860... |
