How to follow the US midterm elections online Posted: 06 Nov 2018 04:01 PM PST One of the most consequential US elections in recent history is taking place tonight, culminating with either a Republican sweep of the Senate and House of Representatives or a chance for the Democratic Party to retake Congress after nearly two years under President Donald Trump's administration. Naturally, a great deal of how we participate in and monitor modern elections — like monitoring polls and forecasts, and checking live election results — happens now online, while much of the immediate A variety of journalistic organizations, TV news channels, and bipartisan groups provide real-time news and analysis from the ground as polls close and results start coming in. So while you may not have cable and a TV tuned to a news channel, or... |
Players of Samantha Bee’s mobile game have reported over 800 instances of voter suppression Posted: 06 Nov 2018 03:55 PM PST The 2018 midterm elections were always going to be a referendum on the state of America, since they've arrived halfway through the Trump presidency. Late-night TV has coped with the last two years of horrifying news in different ways: John Oliver trolls the Trump White House and its supporters with elaborate stunts; Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert ditch jokes in favor of impassioned monologues. And a few months ago, Full Frontal host Samantha Bee released an app called This Is Not A Game: The Game, which married HQ Trivia-esque gameplay with political knowledge, for jackpots ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. In the lead-up to this year's climactic midterms, however, Bee and the show have partnered with The Democracy Labs — a project... |
Ariana Grande’s ‘thank u, next’ has come full circle as an extremely online event Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:59 PM PST Ariana Grande and Pete Davidon's failed relationship was strung together by a series of inexplicable, enjoyable, and very online moments. From the second Ariana Grande released a song called "pete davidson" to sparking conversation about "Big Dick Energy" and inspiring one of the most popular couple's Halloween costumes, their relationship has cultivated an aspect of online culture in 2018. That trend has continued, and come to an end, with Grande's release of her post-breakup power anthem, "thank u, next" — a song that shares the same title as a tweet Grande sent the night before. The song is a love letter to herself, echoing pop superstars of decades past in her strong declarations that she doesn't need to define her worth by a... |
League of Legends maker Riot Games is sued for gender-based discrimination Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:59 PM PST One current and one former employee are suing Riot Games in a class-action lawsuit citing gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, and unequal pay. The lawsuit was first reported by Kotaku. Accusations against Riot Games, which is best-known for making League of Legends, first arose in a Kotaku investigative feature from three months ago that included complaints from dozens of employees. Riot Games responded in a statement to The Verge: "While we do not discuss the details of ongoing litigation, we can say that we take every allegation of this nature seriously and investigate them thoroughly. We remain committed to a deep and comprehensive evolution of our culture to ensure Riot is a place where all Rioters thrive." The company... |
AT&T will cut off service for a dozen customers over piracy violations Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:00 PM PST AT&T plans to alert over a dozen customers in the next week or two that their service will be terminated due to copyright infringement, anonymous sources told Axios. This is one of the first instances AT&T has ended a customer's service over piracy issues. AT&T told The Verge today in a statement:

Qualcomm must license patents to competing chipmakers, court rules Posted: 06 Nov 2018 01:59 PM PST Qualcomm was dealt a major loss in one of its many ongoing legal battles this afternoon, with a federal court ruling that the company must license its modem patents to competing chipmakers, potentially weakening its stranglehold on the market. The ruling came out of a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit against Qualcomm, which was filed near the start of 2017. The crux of the lawsuit — whether Qualcomm used anti-competitive practices to maintain a monopoly over smartphone modems — isn't being ruled on here. But the court did hone in on a single question at issue: whether Qualcomm has to license standard essential patents to competitors. In this case, the court ruled it does. Qualcomm... |
TanaCon ‘documentary’ offers a clumsy behind-the-scenes look at what went wrong Posted: 06 Nov 2018 01:05 PM PST In June, alongside annual creator conference VidCon, YouTuber Tana Mongeau held her own event called TanaCon. Despite promises of free concerts, talks, and meet-and-greets with stars like Shane Dawson and Bella Thorne, the event spiraled into a disaster that was canceled after its first day. Dawson later released a three-part series featuring interviews with Mongeau and TanaCon organizer Michael Weist. Now, Weist has released his own version of events. The tedious hour-and-a-half video, "TanaCon: What Really Happened," is a no-flair affair featuring meetings between Mongeau, Weist, and other organizers involved with the event. (Embedded shares of the video have been prohibited by the YouTube channel.) While some of the footage was... |
Tesla’s on-site health clinic accused of undercounting worker injuries Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:48 PM PST The on-site health clinic at Tesla's Fremont, California factory prioritized underreporting workplace injuries over proper treatment and safety, according to a new report from Reveal and The Center for Investigative Reporting. The allegations build on similar claims published by Reveal earlier this year from current and former Tesla employees, and they imply that the company's so-called Model 3 "production hell" has had serious physical consequences on the workers who put the cars together. Reveal says Tesla's clinic uses different methods to keep official injury counts down when they should be higher, citing company documents and the accounts of five former employees, including a physician assistant named Anna Watson who worked there... |
The midrange Surface Go is now available in Microsoft’s store Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:54 AM PST Microsoft's tiny laptop-tablet hybrid Surface Go originally came in two variants: a 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD budget model for $399 and an 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD model for $549. Then in July, Costco began selling a $549 bundle that included a Surface Go with 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, and the Surface Type Cover (which separately, would cost $99). Now the exclusive period on the Costco model is over, and the 4GB / 128GB variant has made its way to the Microsoft Store for $499. Unfortunately, it's currently out of stock but a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the company is working to restock the model. At $499 for just the laptop, though, the Microsoft deal isn't as good of a deal as the Costco bundle, which includes the Surface Type Cover. It's... |
