Facebook building evacuated after reported bomb threat Posted: 11 Dec 2018 06:36 PM PST A building on Facebook's Menlo Park campus, which houses both Instagram and Facebook employees, has been evacuated Tuesday night after a reported bomb threat. Menlo Park police confirmed on Twitter that its bomb squad was on the scene, and was conducting a search of the building. The threat was was initially called into the New York Police Department's Crimestopper unit, according to a local San Francisco NBC report. Authorities in Menlo Park were then alerted. The rest of Facebook's campus was not told to evacuate at the time of this writing. Concerns about safety at tech campuses in the Bay Area have risen over the past year, especially following a shooting at YouTube's San Bruno campus in April. It's unclear how many people were... |
Skullcandy launches its first truly wireless earbuds Posted: 11 Dec 2018 03:41 PM PST Skullcandy announced the launch of its first truly wireless earbuds today, called the Skullcandy Push. The earbuds feature a large button on the side, which can be used to answer calls, switch audio tracks, and control the volume, in addition to activating your phone's voice assistant to perform tasks like sending a message or setting reminders by triple-tapping that button. The Skullcandy Push offers six hours of listening time, and placing the earbuds into a fully charged case can offer an additional six hours. That's slightly longer than the Apple AirPods' 5 hours of listening time, but the AirPods charging case boasts multiple charges that add up to 24 hours. The earbuds only come in one color,... |
Huawei’s CFO is granted bail by Canadian court but will be closely monitored Posted: 11 Dec 2018 03:10 PM PST Meng Wanzhou, one of Huawei's top executives and the eldest daughter of the company's founder/CEO, will be released on bail and kept under tight monitoring over bank fraud allegations, a Canadian court ruled today. The Star Vancouver reported the decision Tuesday, which comes after a growing wave of Chinese nationalist sentiment brought protesters out to demand Meng's release and even led Vancouver residents offer up their homes to prove Meng wouldn't be a flight risk. As part of the deal, Meng must remain in British Columbia, provide a supervisor with telephone numbers, live at a $5.6 million home that was selected as her residence, and stay indoors from 11PM to 6AM every day. She'll have to surrender her passports and be under the... |
Hertz plans slightly speedier rentals using facial recognition and fingerprints Posted: 11 Dec 2018 02:32 PM PST Hertz announced Tuesday that it is going to lean on facial recognition and fingerprint verification technology to speed up the rental process at airports. The rental car giant struck a deal with biometric airport security company Clear to provide the technology. The two companies have already rolled out this new offering, called "Hertz Fast Lane powered by Clear," at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It will only be available to members of Hertz's Gold Plus Rewards program, and these renters will have to enroll with Clear separately. Hertz won't charge extra for the fast lane, but renters will still have to pay for Clear if they want to use the service for faster access at airport security. |
Lyft is offering $2.50 rides to grocery stores for DC residents with limited food choices Posted: 11 Dec 2018 02:19 PM PST Lyft is partnering with a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC to give rides to local families living in food deserts. The pilot program will offer some families access to heavily discounted, shared Lyft rides to grocery stores. The partnership, with the nonprofit Martha's Table, hopes to reduce time and effort spent shopping for food. For $2.50, qualifying families can ride to and from the limited number of grocery stores in their region, including Safeway, Giant, and Martha's Table's lobby market. The discount can't be used on rides going to any other destinations. To qualify for the program, the household must have children zoned in one of the few elementary schools that Lyft and Martha's Table have agreed... |
Google still has no answers for YouTube’s biggest problem Posted: 11 Dec 2018 01:53 PM PST From Pizzagate to QAnon, YouTube has a serious problem with conspiracy theories. The basic moderation problem has splintered into a number of different scandals over the past two years, including disturbing children's content, terrorism videos, white supremacy dog whistling, and radicalization via YouTube's algorithm. But when confronted on those issues at a House Judiciary hearing today, Pichai offered the same response that YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has offered in the past: there is no immediate cure. The most vigorous questions came from Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who confronted Pichai over a Washington Post report on conspiracy videos that plague YouTube. These videos, which he summarized as "videos claiming politicians, celebrities,... |
How to set up eSIM on the Apple iPhone XR and XS Posted: 11 Dec 2018 01:34 PM PST Sometimes a single phone number isn't enough — if you need to go abroad, for example, or need separate business and personal numbers, two is definitely better than one. Until recently, unless your phone could accommodate two SIMs, you were out of luck. However, Apple has now made it possible for owners of an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or iPhone XS Max to add a second line of service by using an eSIM (or digital SIM), bypassing the need for a physical SIM card. This will let you easily add a local carrier if you travel internationally. You can even have two different plans on the same phone — say, one for voice and messages and one for data. Although currently your choice of carriers in the US is a little limited: only Verizon and AT&T offer... |
Firefox 64 brings better browser tab management and smart recommendations Posted: 11 Dec 2018 11:35 AM PST The newest version of Firefox for desktop and Android, version 64, is out today and it comes with a few nifty features for more intensive tab and extension use. Mozilla says you'll now "see suggestions in regular browsing mode for new and relevant Firefox features, services, and extensions based on how you use the web," a feature that won't work while in private browsing mode and is not based on your browser history. One such example is Firefox recommending To Google Translate if it sees you're constantly using Google's natural language tool. Another new feature in version 64 is something Mozilla is calling "enhanced tab management." That means you'll now be able to select multiple tabs in your tab bar and group them together to move,... |
Google’s CEO had to remind Congress that Google doesn’t make iPhones Posted: 11 Dec 2018 11:34 AM PST In any congressional hearing about technology, at least a few lawmakers will use Silicon Valley executives as their own personal tech support staff. But usually, the questions at least involve products that their companies actually make. So Google CEO Sundar Pichai got particularly unlucky at a hearing in the House Judiciary Committee today, when Rep. Steve King (R-IA) asked Pichai to explain why his daughter's iPhone was acting strangely. "I have a seven-year-old granddaughter who picked up her phone during the election, and she's playing a little game, the kind of game a kid would play," King told Pichai. "And up on there pops a picture of her grandfather. And I'm not going to say into the record what kind of language was used around... |
Food delivery app Deliveroo opens its first brick-and-mortar restaurant in Hong Kong Posted: 11 Dec 2018 11:28 AM PST Online food delivery app Deliveroo has opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Hong Kong, as reported by CNBC. In a press release, Deliveroo says the store will host five popular restaurants that will offer a variety of global dishes, like Shanghai noodles and Hawaiian fish. In Deliveroo's hybrid concept, customers can walk in and order food to go from these restaurant partners or place orders for delivery. If it performs well, the company could open more in other countries. The storefront is called Deliveroo Food Market, which is the same name attached to Deliveroo's recently launched service that lets customers select dishes from different restaurants in a single online order. It's also an expansion on its Editions program —... |
