Facebook is expanding its video platform while reportedly slashing news show funding Posted: 13 Dec 2018 03:40 PM PST Facebook Watch is expanding, even as it's failing to gain much traction amongst younger, digital-native audiences. Today, the platform announced it was expanding its 15-sec ads to more than a dozen new countries, as well as launching Watch on desktop globally and on Facebook Lite. The move comes just as Facebook slashed funding for some of its original news shows made in partnership with CNN, Buzzfeed, and ABC News, The Information reported today. While Facebook's budget for news content remains at $90 million, the company is reallocating the funds to other programs. The Information also reported that the ad revenue generated from Facebook Watch has fallen below expectations. In October, Facebook announced it had partnered with MTV to b... |
IMAX is shutting down its virtual reality arcade business for good Posted: 13 Dec 2018 03:35 PM PST Virtual reality arcades were supposed to be one of the first, most convenient ways that expensive VR headgear would reach the masses — but IMAX, the highest-profile provider of VR arcades, has decided to throw in the towel. The large-format cinema company has officially announced that it will be shutting down its last three locations in Los Angeles, Bangkok and Toronto early next year, and is writing off its VR business as well. That's according to Variety, which spotted the news in a SEC regulatory filing and got a more detailed statement from an IMAX spokeperson as well: "With the launch of the IMAX VR centre pilot program our intention was to test a variety of different concepts and locations to determine which approaches work well.... |
Vergecast: Sundar testifies, a hole-punch display, and Verizon’s future Posted: 13 Dec 2018 03:04 PM PST This week on The Vergecast, Nilay, Paul, and Dieter devote half the show to discussing what happened when CEO of Google Sundar Pichai testified before the House Judiciary Committee. Congress thinks Google has a bias problem — does it? The second half of the show is dedicated to gadgets! Both Samsung and Huawei revealed a phone with a "hole-punch" display so the crew theorize what's coming in 2019 for the smartphone world. There's a whole lot more in between that — like Elizabeth Lopatto's "This week in Elon" — so listen to this whole dang show; you'll get all you need before the year ends. 1:30 - All the news from Google CEO Sundar Pichai's appearance before the House Judiciary Committee 27:28 - "This week in Elon" with Elizabeth... |
Apple is shutting down Apple Music’s rarely-used Connect feature Posted: 13 Dec 2018 02:56 PM PST Apple is giving up on its second attempt to create something of a social network within its music app. The company has informed artists that effective today, they can no longer post content to the Connect section of Apple Music. This page on Apple.com confirms the change, saying that "Connect posts from artists are no longer supported." Credit to 9to5Mac for reporting the development. When it introduced Apple Music at WWDC 2015, Apple pitched Connect as a unique avenue for linking musicians and their fans and a standout feature of the service. Jimmy Iovine billed Connect as one of the three major pillars of Apple Music, with the others being the streaming music service and Beats Radio. "This is going to be very powerful for musicians,"... |
Starbucks expands delivery to 2,000 stores via UberEats Posted: 13 Dec 2018 02:55 PM PST There's good news for people who can't be bothered to leave their apartments for their morning coffee, and terrible news for baristas everywhere. Starbucks announced today that it's expanding its delivery partnership with Uber Eats to 2,000 more US stores, which makes up about a quarter of all Starbucks locations in the country. The service, called Starbucks Delivers, has been operating as a pilot program since September in Miami, Tokyo, and a handful of cities in China. Starbucks says it will be expanding the service to seven more metropolitan areas in the US starting next year. Starbucks has offered deliveries through Postmates since 2015, but the company says its new initiative leverages more learnings from its Starbucks Delivers... |
Tumblr is back in Apple’s App Store following adult content ban Posted: 13 Dec 2018 02:49 PM PST Back in November, Apple banned the official Tumblr app from the App Store over child pornography issues, and today — following an announcement from Tumblr two weeks ago that it would be banning all adult content from the website — the app has been restored and is once again available to download, via TechCrunch. Tumblr has been trending toward more aggressive content moderation over the months that it's been under the stewardship of Verizon's Oath, adding things like soon to be obsolete safe mode that automatically filtered mature content (which was set as the default option for users in February). And while Tumblr hasn't openly admitted that the Apple ban was the inciting incident for announcing the... |
Bitcoin scammers send bomb threats worldwide, causing evacuations Posted: 13 Dec 2018 02:40 PM PST Spammers are sending a wave of threats to businesses, schools, and other locations in English-speaking countries across the world, demanding bitcoin in exchange for not detonating a supposed bomb. There's no evidence of any actual explosives being placed or detonated, but it's causing numerous evacuations and law enforcement investigations across the US, Canada, and New Zealand — and potentially elsewhere. Police are both investigating potential threats and asking victims to exercise caution. Several examples of the email threat have been posted online. A typical example, printed by the Cedar Rapids Police Department in Iowa, carries the subject line "Do not waste your time." Its sender warns that a man has carried an explosive device... |
SoundCloud’s new integration with Serato is a missed opportunity Posted: 13 Dec 2018 02:04 PM PST SoundCloud is now integrated with the newest versions of Serato DJ, allowing DJs to search, play, and mix any song uploaded to SoundCloud natively within Serato. It's an immensely convenient integration that'll give DJs access to SoundCloud's unique library of music, but it also falls flat for one major reason: there's no offline support, making it a nonstarter for live performances. Several DJ softwares have had streaming services integrated for some time — djay, for example, lets you pull from Spotify Premium. But SoundCloud has long been the platform DJs have relied on for remixes, mashups, and other material that isn't on typical music streaming services. Having SoundCloud integrated into Serato is a definite bonus if you want to try... |
After a decade, MapleStory players finally get to fight their biggest villain Posted: 13 Dec 2018 01:49 PM PST For 15 years, the massively multiplayer game MapleStory has foretold of a great evil at the heart of its story. Everything was great until the Black Mage arrived in town, tainting everything with his dark magic. During that time, players have never actually been able to fight the guy. For years, MapleStory fans have leveled up their characters through long, complex quest lines, coming to the rescue of non-playable characters, fetching them important quest items, all without ever actually coming into direct contact with the Black Mage. Instead, most of the main bosses in the game are minions sent by the Mage, while he watches on, always above it all. But that has finally changed. In an update that arrived in Korean MapleStory in the... |
Amazon ends Instacart partnership with Whole Foods Posted: 13 Dec 2018 12:36 PM PST Grocery delivery company Instacart announced today that its partnership with Amazon-owned Whole Foods is coming to an end. Instacart was in the midst of a five-year deal signed in 2016 that established the company as Whole Foods' exclusive delivery carrier, but the deal became complicated when Amazon acquired Whole Foods in 2017. The details of how the contract was ended are unclear, but it makes sense that Amazon would now want to deliver its own groceries through its own Prime Now and AmazonFresh services. The tension between Instacart and Amazon has been brewing since the acquisition. Last month, it was reported by Business Insider that it was cheaper to order Whole Foods delivery through Instacart than Amazon, after Instacart quietly... |
