Cydia closes purchases for its iOS jailbreak store Posted: 16 Dec 2018 12:00 PM PST In the earliest days of the iPhone, Cydia arose as a rival distribution channel to Apple's App Store, built specifically for jailbroken smartphones. Now, more than decade later, Cydia founder Jay "Saurik" Freeman has decided to shut down in-app purchasing through the Cydia mobile store after he acknowledged a bug related to PayPal digital token authorization that affected "very few users," via TechCrunch. Through Cydia, users could buy mobile software designed to run on a jailbroken iOS device, but the jailbreaking community has grown smaller over the years as Apple's iOS ecosystem has grown more robust and secure. "The reality is that I wanted to just shut down the Cydia Store entirely before the end of the year, and was considering... |
Doppelgänger accounts are still a powerful tool for cyberstalkers Posted: 16 Dec 2018 10:00 AM PST Starting in 2017, Joel Kurzynski started to make life hard for his enemies. According to his plea agreement, he targeted four people in particular — a man and a woman — with a sustained cyberstalking campaign, sending harassing spam calls at odd hours and over a thousand texts. As time went on, he got more creative, starting a dummy account with one target's name and picture looking for "dom guys into treating me like crap." He registered another target with with a string of weight loss programs, resulting in months of rolling emails. The attack is a byproduct of an unfortunate fact about the online space: it's very easy to sign up for things, and very hard to quit. Services like Scruff want more users, of course, and a rigorous identity... |
Vine and HQ Trivia co-founder Colin Kroll has died in an apparent drug overdose Posted: 16 Dec 2018 09:08 AM PST The Daily Beast and TMZ are reporting that HQ Trivia and Vine co-founder Colin Kroll was found dead this weekend in his New York City apartment. He was 35. According to TMZ, Kroll's body was discovered this morning after his girlfriend was unable to reach him. Sources tell the publication that they discovered "drug paraphernalia nearby" and suspect that he overdosed. Kroll was part of the team that founded short-form video platform Vine in 2012, and followed the company when it was acquired by Twitter, and acted as its CTO and General Manager until 2014. That year, fellow co-founder Dom Hofmann left Twitter, and Kroll took over his duties temporarily before he was later fired. He and Hofmann then founded HQ Trivia, which launched last... |
Electric scooters need to toughen up — and stay out of lakes — if they are going to survive 2019 Posted: 16 Dec 2018 09:00 AM PST In September 2017, a company called "Bird Rides" dumped several hundred electric scooters on the streets of Santa Monica, California, kicking off the scooter-sharing trend in the US. Fourteen months later, people are vandalizing those scooters and dumping them into lakes, and investors are losing interest. The explosive growth of dockless scooters and their contentious reputation was the surprise transportation story of the year. Bird and its main rival Lime are each worth an estimated $2 billion, and their popularity has given rise to over 30 scooter startups operating in an estimated 150 markets around the world. But as they head into year two, investors are losing interest while the business is growing increasingly expensive to... |
Sleepy Skunk’s latest movie mashup is a reminder for all the films you missed in 2018 Posted: 16 Dec 2018 08:08 AM PST A couple of weeks ago, my colleague Bijan Stephens had an astute observation: 2018 felt different. It went by quickly, but there was so much to it that it was easy to forget that we had an Olympics, and that films like Black Panther hit theaters. I was reminded of this when I watched through Sleepy Skunk's latest end-of-year film mashup, because I had completely forgotten that movies like Pacific Rim: Uprising and Ready Player One came out in 2018. End-of-year film mashups are a staple of YouTube come December — slickly edited trailers for the year in cinema. They're fun to go back and watch through: I recommend Gen Ip's Filmography mashups between 2010 and 2013 (she's since moved on to work as a professional editor, working on trailers... |

Google Photos no longer offers unlimited storage for unsupported video formats Posted: 16 Dec 2018 07:00 AM PST Google Photos will no longer let you upload unsupported video formats and take advantage of the free unlimited storage it offers, the company announced in a change to its support site earlier this week, as first spotted by Android Police. It's a small change that won't affect most users. Google Photos already supports the following video formats:
This leaves some RAW and VOB files as the most popular formats Google Photos doesn't support. So if you use excluded formats, get ready to watch your storage more closely or pay a bit extra for Google One. I finally wised up and uploaded my photo library to Google Photos a few... |
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s music collection turns your Switch into a giant MP3 player Posted: 16 Dec 2018 06:00 AM PST The best way to describe Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch is comprehensive. As the name implies, it's designed to offer anything a Smash fan could want, with an absurdly huge cast of characters and a large array of play options, including a new in-depth single-player mode. That comprehensive nature extends to the in-game music player, which covers a range of different games and series. What makes it really great, though, is how Nintendo has built the player with the Switch in mind. It turns the gaming tablet into an oversized MP3 player that's perfect for jamming to Splatoon. In terms of pure numbers, Ultimate features more than 24 hours of music spanning 718 different tracks. When you go into the music player — which is... |
