Apple now allows gifting of in-app purchases Posted: 19 Dec 2018 03:22 PM PST Apple has changed its guidelines for gifting in-app purchases, as spotted by MacRumors. Previously, you could gift paid apps to other people, but not paid in-app content. The new language is found in Apple's App Store Review Guidelines. Before, it read: "Apps should not directly or indirectly enable gifting of in-app purchase content, features, or consumable items to others." Now, it says: "Apps may enable gifting of items that are eligible for in-app purchase to others. Such gifts may only be refunded to the original purchaser and may not be exchanged." Freemium games aren't going anywhere (and microtransactions are extremely profitable), so it makes sense that Apple would continue to react to how people are spending their money on and... |
Microsoft’s Halo-themed prosthetic arm will make kids feel like Master Chief Posted: 19 Dec 2018 03:13 PM PST Microsoft's 343 Industries has partnered with bionics non-profit Limbitless Solutions to create Halo-themed, 3D-printed prosthetic arms for children. The prosthetic arms are fully functional, with hands that are capable of gripping objects through EMG sensors. The best part is, they're donated free of charge to recipients. Starting next year, Limbitless will add two Halo-themed options to their design lineup, which already includes a pretty sweet Iron Man arm. There's a recreation of Master Chief's Mark VI gauntlet in his trademark green, as well as a "multiplayer" version that kids can customize with their favorite color — so if they play with a certain color Spartan in the game, they can wear that same gauntlet in the real world. |
Google Lens can now recognize a billion items Posted: 19 Dec 2018 02:22 PM PST Google's AI-powered camera tool can now recognize over a billion items, the company wrote in a new blog post. Google Lens launched last year in a preliminary version on Photos and Assistant with only around 250,000 items within its repertoire. The expansion comes over a year after the Google Lens' optical character recognition engine has been trained on reading more product labels. By recognizing text, Google Lens thus can put names to the faces of more goods. It has also been fed more data from photos taken by smartphones, so Google says the feature is overall more reliable than before. The 1 billion items figure comes from products available through Google Shopping, so it likely doesn't include more obscure, unshoppable objects, such... |
Apple confirms some iPad Pros ship slightly bent, but says it’s normal Posted: 19 Dec 2018 02:14 PM PST Apple has confirmed to The Verge that some of its 2018 iPad Pros are shipping with a very slight bend in the aluminum chassis. But according to the company, this is a side effect of the device's manufacturing process and shouldn't worsen over time or negatively affect the flagship iPad's performance in any practical way. Apple does not consider it to be a defect. The bend is the result of a cooling process involving the iPad Pro's metal and plastic components during manufacturing, according to Apple. Both sizes of the new iPad Pro can exhibit it. The iPad Pro ranges in price from $799 for the base 11-inch model up to $1,899 for a fully-loaded 12.9-inch device with 1TB of storage and LTE connectivity. The response comes after some... |
Magic Leap One just got prescription inserts for people who are nearsighted Posted: 19 Dec 2018 01:06 PM PST If you wear glasses and want to use Magic Leap's mixed reality headset, there's good news. Magic Leap is finally getting prescription inserts for its Magic Leap One headset, as noted in an email from the company. You can order these prescription inserts for a hefty $249 from FramesDirect and they're supposedly anti-reflective. They're available in two sizes and you'll have to provide your prescription and your pupil distance when ordering. They notably also don't support people who are farsighted and only provide prescriptions up to -7.50, so if you are extremely nearsighted, you'll also be out of luck. Once you get those prescription inserts, you can pull out the standard inserts and snap in your new ones. You'll also need to open the... |
Wear OS gets a Dark Sky app that will surely save the platform Posted: 19 Dec 2018 12:19 PM PST Dark Sky has finally come to Wear OS, with the company behind the hyperlocal weather app announcing today that the watch extension will be available as part of its premium subscription on Android. A relatively big name like Dark Sky making the jump to Wear OS is the sort of thing that would have been encouraging for the platform a few years ago, but now just feels like ticking a box on a feature list. Wear OS has felt like a half-dead zombie of a platform for years, dogged by poor software support from Google and poor hardware options from partners, to say nothing of third-party app developers. And seeing one notable app come aboard doesn't change much. Add in that Dark Sky is somewhat frustratingly unreliable at times... |

Snapchat launches Lens Challenges akin to TikTok, Instagram Posted: 19 Dec 2018 12:00 PM PST Challenges on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram dominate the way people participate in online trends, and now Snapchat is trying to get in on the action with Lens Challenges. Lens Challenges are exactly what they sound like: themed challenges that incorporate a special Snapchat Lens, which can then be featured for the app's community. The first challenge, which launches today, is tied into the holiday season. Snapchat users can select a specific Lens that will allow them to sing a version of "Jingle Bells" performed by Gwen Stefani. Snapchat may be the latest company to jump on offering official challenges for users to participate in, but it's in no way the first. TikTok, an app owned by Chinese company Bytedance, has perfected using... |
Watch the first trailer for the Hellboy reboot Posted: 19 Dec 2018 11:50 AM PST Hellboy is back. Lionsgate released a first look at the upcoming adaptation of Mike Mignola's classic noir-horror comic, showcasing Stranger Things star David Harbour as the titular demon. The trailer shows off the titular character working alongside members of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) as they fight against monsters that threaten the world. In Mignola's story, Hellboy also struggles against his demonic nature, and against the reactions of humans who see him as a monster. Also in the trailer: Ian McShane as Hellboy's adoptive father, Professor Bruttenholm; Lost's Daniel Dae Kim as BPRD operative Ben Daimio; and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan. Much of the action appears to be centered in England, which tracks,... |
