Sprint will pay $330 million to New York in tax fraud settlement

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 12:45 PM PST

A long-running lawsuit between the state of New York and Sprint has come to a close. According to New York Attorney General Barbara D. Underwood (via Engadget), the wireless carrier will pay the state $330 million to settle claims that it failed to collect more than $100 million in taxes from customers for nearly a decade.

The state sued the telecommunications company in 2012, alleging that the company deliberately failed to collect $100 million in sales taxes on flat-rate access charges for wireless plans over the course of seven years, and that it filed false records and statements to the state in order to reduce the prices of its products. At the time, Sprint denied the allegations, saying that they were "without merit" and vowing to...

Target is selling the Home Hub and two Home Mini speakers for just $100

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 12:21 PM PST

Target is picking up where Walmart, Verizon, B&H Photo and Google left off, continuing the aggressive deal that might be all many people need to outfit their house or apartment with Google Assistant this holiday season. When you buy a Home Hub smart display, two Home Mini smart speakers will be included for free, at a total price of $100. The Hub ordinarily retails for $149, with the speakers going for $49 each. This deal will end once Sunday, December 23rd expires.

Obviously both products have been discounted at times during the holiday season — including right now at various retailers. But this bundle from the Google Store B&H Photo Verizon Walmart Target seems pretty tough to beat.

You'll gain three Google Assistant devices, all of...

Facebook shelved a feature intended to promote civil political discourse

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 12:11 PM PST

The Wall Street Journal reports that Facebook had begun working on a feature that would encourage users of opposing political beliefs to interact in a more positive way. But the project — known as "Common Ground" — was reportedly halted after Facebook's global head of policy raised concerns that it could lead to accusations that the site was biased against conservatives.

Sources told the WSJ that the Common Ground project would have brought together several different projects "meant to minimize toxic content and encourage more civil discussion," which included changes to how the News Feed was ranked, and to de-emphasize "hateful" comments. Kaplan — along with other executives — worried that conservative users would be disproportionately...

Deadly Indonesian tsunami was not caused by an earthquake

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 11:34 AM PST

There was no earth-shaking warning before a wall of water rushed ashore under the cover of darkness in Indonesia on Saturday, killing more than 220 people, and injuring hundreds more. Unlike many large tsunamis, this one was not caused by an earthquake. Instead, experts think that a nearby volcanic eruption triggered an underwater landslide, which pushed the wall of water towards the shore.

The tsunami hit around 9:30PM local time, when many residents and visitors were relaxing near the beach on the islands of Java and Sumatra, on either side of the Sunda Strait, a narrow body of water that links the Indian Ocean to the Java Sea. The most likely culprit for the destruction is a volcano in the middle of the strait, Anak Krakatau. Earlier...

The Haunted Island: a Frog Detective Game is a farcical tale of ghosts, vacations to Indonesia, and overzealous dental care

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 08:00 AM PST

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend.

The Haunted Island: a Frog Detective Game is a first person adventure set in a strange world of penguin supervisors, ghost scientists, the importance of daily dental care, and improvised explosives made from pasta. Suffice it to say this game is completely ridiculous. It has an aesthetic and terse writing style that feel like a cross between Adventure Time and the work of Keita Takahashi (creator of Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy).

You play as the titular frog, named The Detective, who has been assigned a case by their...

Foundryside is a cyberpunk adventure wrapped in an epic fantasy novel

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 07:00 AM PST

When someone asks you to picture a fantasy world, what often springs to mind is something like the works of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings or George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, with all the trappings of a pastoral England or medieval Europe. But recently, a number of authors have begun imagining fantasy with new perspectives, where their character's motivations and story are rooted in more modern concerns. One such recent novel is Robert Jackson Bennett's Foundryside, the first in a new trilogy that imagines magic almost as though it's a type of artificial intelligence.

Foundryside was one of my picks for 2018's best novels, because it has such an interesting take on how fantasy can operate. Certainly, it's not the...

2018 in weird science, from alien conspiracies to sensory illusions

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 06:00 AM PST

There was plenty of important science this year, from ever-dire warnings of climate change to the launch of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy. And then, there was the time everyone argued over a few seconds of a clip that said either "yanny" or "laurel." With that in mind, here (in no particular order) are 10 of the best of weird science stories of 2018 — the disgusting, horrifying, and the viral.

1. "How a beach umbrella fatally impaled a woman with 800 pounds of force"
One can find plenty of horrifying case studies in medical journals, and this one from the Journal of Forensic Sciences doesn't disappoint. Not recommended reading for anxious people who frequently go to the beach, or those already suspicious of enormous beach umbrellas

2. "Paul...

Watch SpaceX launch its final Falcon 9 rocket of the year for the Air Force

Posted: 23 Dec 2018 04:51 AM PST

On Sunday morning, SpaceX will attempt to launch a new GPS satellite for the US Air Force from Florida — the last mission of the year for the company. If successful, SpaceX will finish 2018 with 21 launches and beat out its own record of 18 missions last year. However, viewers won't get to see one of SpaceX's rocket landings this time around, as the Falcon 9 rocket carrying the satellite will be deposited in the ocean.

SpaceX has been trying to get this launch off the ground for the last week, but a combination of bad weather and strange sensor readings on the rocket forced the company to push back the mission until this weekend. There was also some concern that a looming government shutdown might affect operations this weekend. For its...
