Huawei’s CFO is being accused of fraud, and her main defense is a PowerPoint

Posted: 07 Dec 2018 02:58 PM PST

After years of facing suspicion from US authorities, Huawei is now standing trial for fraud. Today, a bail hearing was held for Huawei's chief financial officer, who was arrested in Canada on Saturday at the request of US law enforcement. The CFO, Meng Wanzhou, is facing extradition to the US for conspiring to defraud banking institutions, according to The Star Vancouver.

Many lined up to see Meng's bail hearing today, after the extremely high-profile arrest that signified the first major break in a US probe that has mostly been kept from the public. Meng happens to be the daughter of Huawei's founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei, a former People's Liberation Army engineer whose connection to the Chinese Communist Party has contributed to the s...

Apple releases new Beddit sleep tracker

Posted: 07 Dec 2018 02:34 PM PST

Apple has released the first Beddit sleep tracker since acquiring the Finnish company in 2017, via CNET. The Beddit 3.5 Sleep Monitor is a thin sensor strip that can be placed under the bedsheet to track body movements through the night. It's available to purchase now for $150 on Apple's website and in stores.

The 2mm-thin sleep tracker can measure sleep time, heart rate, breathing, snoring, and bedroom temperature and humidity. The advantage over other sleep monitoring fitness trackers is you don't need to wear an activity tracker to bed, or remember to use it. You can still connect it to your Apple Watch, which can display sleep report notifications, bedtime reminders, and nudges when synced. Your sleep analysis and heart rate data is...

Xiaomi showed off a 5G version of its latest flagship phone, the Mi Mix 3, at a conference in China this week. In the demo, Xiaomi demonstrated how you can surf the web and stream live videos more quickly through the 5G network.

The 5G version of the Mi Mix 3 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and an X50 5G modem with a maximum download speed of 2Gbps. The regular version runs on the Snapdragon 845, the processor that was found in many Android phones in 2018.

Xiaomi has been working on 5G technology since 2016, and it has a partnership with one of China's largest carriers, China Mobile, to explore more applications of the nascent tech. The 5G version of the Mi Mix 3 may become available early next year in Europe, and more smartphones...

Apple acquires artist development startup Platoon

Posted: 07 Dec 2018 12:41 PM PST

Apple has acquired artist development startup Platoon, reports TechCrunch. Platoon works with creators to produce and distribute their work, and it uses analytics to target audiences and build marketing strategies. Notable acts Platoon has worked with in the past include Billie Eilish and Jorja Smith.

The acquisition of Platoon could serve to bolster Apple's Up Next platform, which allocates resources to up-and-coming artists. Rapper 6lack was the first participant in Up Next when it debuted in 2017, and as part of the program, he received marketing perks like an interview and live performance on Beats 1, an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden, and more. These tools have appeal to lesser-known and unsigned artists and can...

Instead of making a new phone, Essential has bought a defunct email app

Posted: 07 Dec 2018 12:33 PM PST

Essential has acquired CloudMagic, pairing the struggling smartphone maker with the company behind the shut-down email app Newton, it confirmed to TechCrunch today. It's a weird convergence of two underdogs, but makes some amount of sense when you look at what's supposed to be next for Essential.

Newton Mail was shut down in September, in another sign that premium email apps are experiencing much difficulty competing against the free options offered by Google, Microsoft, and Apple. Essential acquired the mail company for an undisclosed amount.

Essential, meanwhile, largely only has the Essential Phone, which didn't sell very well. The company has supposedly given up on making a direct successor. Instead, sources told Bloomberg in October...

FCC investigating whether carriers gave inaccurate information on rural coverage maps

Posted: 07 Dec 2018 11:41 AM PST

The FCC said today that it will investigate whether "major carriers" provided inaccurate information on their coverage areas as the agency determined where to send funds for rural broadband.

The Mobility Fund II project is meant to allocate more than $4.5 billion to encourage building out mobile broadband service in rural areas. As part of the project, the FCC requested coverage maps from carriers, which it could then use to determine which areas needed support.

The agency said a review of more than 20 million speeds tests raised serious questions about the accuracy of the data, and it has suspended the next steps of the project while it investigates.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has...

Alexa is implementing self-learning techniques to better understand users

Posted: 07 Dec 2018 10:43 AM PST

In a developer blog post published today, Alexa AI director of applied science Ruhi Sarikaya detailed the advances in machine learning technologies that have allowed Alexa to better understand users through contextual clues. According to Sarikaya, these improvements have played a role in reducing user friction and making Alexa more conversational.

Since this fall, Amazon has been working on self-learning techniques that teach Alexa to automatically recover from its own errors. The system has been in beta until now, and it launched in the US this week. It doesn't require any human annotation, and, according to Sarikaya, it uses customers' "implicit or explicit contextual signals to detect unsatisfactory interactions or failures of...

Posted: 07 Dec 2018 10:23 AM PST

By the time Avengers: Endgame comes out, there will be 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you've skipped one or two, there may be some lingering questions after watching Endgame's first trailer.

[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp.]

Avengers: Endgame's trailer sets up a surprising reveal: the surviving Avengers presumed that Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, was killed when Thanos wiped out half of the universe's life, only to have him turn up on their doorstep at the end of the trailer. Lang's appearance — wildly waving his arms around and asking Captain America to let him into the makeshift Avengers headquarters — is to the great surprise of just about everyone.

Ant-Man...
