Watch the first teaser for the final season of Game of Thrones Posted: 13 Jan 2019 06:04 PM PST We finally know when the beginning of the end for Game of Thrones will come: April 14th, 2019. HBO revealed the premiere date for the final season of the fantasy epic just before the premiere of the third season of True Detective, along with a teaser trailer. The teaser sets up an intriguing meetup for the eighth and final season, opening with the Stark children returning home to reunite in their family's family crypt at Winterfell. Last fall, HBO announced that the show would return in April for a six-episode final season, and earlier this year. We got a brief tease for the upcoming season, during the 2019 Golden Globes, and HBO chief Richard Plepler recently told Variety that the upcoming season has "exceeded the bar," and d... |
Apple’s HomePod will be available in China on Friday Posted: 13 Jan 2019 02:35 PM PST In December, Apple said that it would begin selling its HomePod smart speaker in China "early next year." Today, the company revealed that the device will go on sale in China and in Hong Kong on Friday, January 18th. The company began selling the HomePod a year ago in the US, and has since rolled it out to various countries in Europe. As my colleague Shannon Liao noted back in December, the HomePod has a bit of an advantage over some of the China's domestic smart speakers with its ability to support both Mandarin and Cantonese, and that it is expected to cost RMB 2,799 (around $408.21), which is a bit above the US price of $350. |
Watch a Chinese probe land on the far side of the Moon Posted: 13 Jan 2019 02:08 PM PST On January 2nd, China became the first country to land a spacecraft on the Moon's far side (not the dark side) when its Chang'e-4 probe gently touched down the surface. Now, China's space agency has released footage of the landing. The short video shows the robotic lander flying over the surface of the moon before abruptly tilting to descend (hovering at one point), before safely touching down in its new home, the Von Kármán crater. There, the lander released a rover, Yutu-2, which will explore the area around the lander. The Chang'e-4 probe is China National Space Administration part of a series of missions designed to explore the surface of the moon, which started in 2007 with the Chang'e-1 orbiter, and was followed in 2010 by the... |
California standoff ends after police use robot to deliver vape pen to suspect Posted: 13 Jan 2019 01:36 PM PST An hours-long standoff in Novato, California came to a peaceful end yesterday when police officers used a police robot to deliver a vape pen to the suspect, who had threatened to burn down a gas station, reports the Sacramento Bee and Marin Independent Journal (via Gizmodo). The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the suspect, Juan Roman, became upset with a gas station manager over an issue with the pump. After arguing with employees, he returned to the store with a can of gas, poured it on the floor, and attempted to light it on fire before fleeing the scene. Police caught up with Roman and cornering him at a second gas station and called for backup when they thought that they caught sight of a gun. A SWAT team and negotiators... |
This beautiful short Star Wars fan film brings Hamlet to a galaxy far, far away Posted: 13 Jan 2019 09:00 AM PST The works of William Shakespeare are incredibly versatile, especially when it comes to science fiction and fantasy. They've been translated into Klingon, been reinterpreted as science fiction films and novels, and even been used as a way to reinterpret the Star Wars franchise. A new Star Wars fan film takes one of the playwright's most famous monologues as a devastating inspiration. Directed by Quebec-based director Maxime-Claude L'Écuyer, Squad Leader TD-73028 Soliloquy (spotted by io9) follows a lone sandtrooper (portrayed by cosplayer David Blouin and voiced by Anton Golikov) as he navigates his way across a desert planet, reciting Hamlet's famous soliloquy. He eventually comes across the body of a fellow trooper, and faces his own... |

Hybrid Air Vehicles will no longer use its ‘flying bum’ prototype airship Posted: 13 Jan 2019 07:05 AM PST A couple of years ago, UK-based Hybrid Air Vehicles captivated the world when it unveiled the Airlander 10, a lighter-than-air airship designed as an alternative to airplanes and helicopters. Now, according to The Guardian, that first prototype won't take to the skies again, as the company says that it "does not plan to fly the prototype aircraft again." The Airlander 10, nicknamed the "flying bum," was originally designed by the US Army in 2010 as a reconnaissance and surveillance platform (called the Long Endurance Multi-intelligence Vehicle), one that could remain aloft for weeks at a time. When budget cuts left the project with a questionable future, Hybrid Air Vehicles purchased the prototype and brought it to the UK, with the... |
Consumer protection websites are down due to the government shutdown Posted: 13 Jan 2019 07:00 AM PST As the government shutdown stretches into the record for longest shutdown ever, key websites run by the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission are still down, leaving consumers more vulnerable. On December 28th, the FTC announced that, while ftc.gov continues to operate, several sites will remain unavailable throughout the shutdown. Among those is donotcall.gov, the website for the agency's National Do Not Call Registry. "Due to the government shutdown, we are unable to offer this website service at this time," a message on the site reads. Consumers with numbers they'd like to register can't sign up, while telemarketers, who are supposed... |
