EA has reportedly cancelled its story-driven Star Wars game Posted: 15 Jan 2019 05:03 PM PST Electronic Arts has finally given the axe to its story-driven, single-player-focused Star Wars game, reports Kotaku. The game, which was once in development under the now-shuttered EA studio Visceral Games, had been in the works for years, most recently under the leadership of Uncharted director Amy Hennig. In June, Hennig revealed she had left EA to form her own studio, leaving the project's fate up in the air. Now, according to Kotaku's Jason Schreier, EA has officially cancelled the game, despite the studio responsible, EA Vancouver, having largely restarted from scratch with what it inherited from Visceral back in October 2017. EA was not immediately available for comment. The news is a sad end for a project that many fans hoped... |

Verizon adds free Apple Music to its pricier unlimited data plans Posted: 15 Jan 2019 03:24 PM PST Verizon has announced it is going to start including Apple Music in two of its unlimited phone plans, as first reported by 9to5Mac. An Apple Music subscription normally costs $9.99 a month, and the move could potentially instantly add millions of new users to the music streaming platform. The subscription will be added at no additional cost for new and existing Verizon customers that have either the Beyond Unlimited or Above Unlimited plan. Those on Verizon's Go Unlimited plan will also get an Apple Music perk — a free six month trial. Verizon's partnership with Apple launched last year, with the carrier offering six free months of Apple Music for customers with current postpaid unlimited data plans. Upping things to an outright free... |
YouTube’s guidelines now address dangerous pranks following Bird Box, Tide Pod challenges Posted: 15 Jan 2019 03:05 PM PST YouTube has a new message for creators looking to participate in dangerous or potentially harmful stunts, like the Bird Box or Tide Pod stunts: don't. The company revealed new policies that creators must follow when uploading content, and one of the biggest changes is a section dedicated entirely to dangerous pranks. YouTube has previously addressed pranks in its harmful and dangerous content category of its overall policies, but seems to have added the new section following a series of disturbing Bird Box challenge videos. YouTube creators have a history of participating in dangerous challenges — including Jake Paul driving blindfolded to participate in the Bird Box challenge, teens eating poisonous Tide Pods for the Tide Pod... |
Trump’s attorney general pick wants to investigate the Justice Department’s role in Big Tech Posted: 15 Jan 2019 02:58 PM PST President Trump's nominee for attorney general, William Barr, said at his first confirmation hearing today that he would look into whether Silicon Valley social media companies were abusing their market position to stifle competition and what the Justice Department's role should be on the issue of consumer data privacy. The question that prompted the response came from junior Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) who dedicated his allotted time to asking Barr about issues surrounding data privacy and the centralized power companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google have on the market. "I'd like to have the antitrust [officials] support that effort to get more involved in reviewing the situation from a... |
Posted: 15 Jan 2019 02:02 PM PST Roku says it will continue to host Alex Jones' conspiracy-theory channel Infowars despite public outcry, stating that the company doesn't "curate or censor based on viewpoint." In a statement, first reported by TechCrunch, Roku says that it is not "promoting or being paid to distribute InfoWars" and that it does "not have a commercial relationship with the InfoWars." Roku has been receiving angry tweets from users over the past few days after many noticed that Infowars continues to be available on the TV streaming device, as first reported by DigiDay. Infowars, known for its hateful content, was effectively de-platformed last year after being booted from Apple's App Store, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, dramatically limiting its... |
Twitter brings the reverse-chronological feed to Android Posted: 15 Jan 2019 01:44 PM PST Twitter brought its traditional reverse-chronological timeline back to iOS last month, and now the optional feature is available to Android users in a new update. It's a welcome choice that brings back some stability to the Twitter feed. Twitter switched to an algorithm-based timeline four years ago during a time when social networks like Facebook and Instagram were experimenting with how best to display feeds to users. Like on iOS, Android users can switch between seeing top tweets and the latest tweets first by tapping the sparkle icon on the top right corner of the app, and switching to the timeline view of their choice.

Japan’s robot hotel lays off half the robots after they created more work for humans Posted: 15 Jan 2019 01:36 PM PST It turns out that even robots are having a tough time holding down a job. Japan's Henn-na "Strange" Hotel has laid off half its 243 robots after they created more problems than they could solve, as first reported by The Wall Street Journal. One of the layoffs included a doll-shaped assistant in each hotel room called Churi. Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa can answer questions about local businesses' opening and closing times, but Churi couldn't. When hotel guests asked Churi "What time does the theme park open?" it didn't have a good answer. That was a problem because Churi was supposed to help ameliorate the Strange Hotel's staff shortage by substituting in for human workers. Others on the... |

Apple launches $129 battery cases for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR Posted: 15 Jan 2019 01:19 PM PST Apple has been rumored to be working on battery cases for its latest iPhone XR and XS models for a while, and today, seemingly out of nowhere, the company has made those cases available for purchase on the Apple Store website, as spotted by Joanna Stern on Twitter. The new battery cases are available for all three of Apple's 2018 iPhone models for $129, regardless of whether you're choosing one for an iPhone XS, XS Max, or XR. The cases will also be offered in both black and white silicon designs, and still feature Apple's distinctive battery hump that it introduced with its earlier battery cases too, albeit with a more tapered design. Unfortunately for older iPhone owners, the product pages specify that the new cases will only work... |
