Microsoft’s Bing search engine reportedly blocked in China Posted: 23 Jan 2019 05:17 PM PST Microsoft's Bing search engine is the latest American technology service to become inaccessible in China, according to a report from the Financial Times. Starting at some point today, internet users in mainland China began complaining that cn.bing.com was no longer available from within the country; it is still accessible to those outside China at the moment. According to sources speaking anonymously with the FT, the state-owned telecom China Unicom has confirmed the order came from the government. We don't yet know what may have triggered the ban. It's not particularly unusual to see a Western website blocked from China's increasingly restrictive internet — Twitch found itself banned back in September, and Facebook, Instagram, and... |
Apple is once again selling its iPhone SE — for now Posted: 23 Jan 2019 03:20 PM PST Last September, Apple officially stopped selling its iPhone X, iPhone SE, and iPhone 6s models, following the release of the iPhone XS and XR. This weekend, MacRumors noticed that Apple quietly began to sell the iPhone SE in its clearance section. And though it sold out during the weekend, the tiny phone now appears to be back! The 2016-era phone is available in 32GB and 128GB sizes, with $100 and $150 knocked off the price, respectively. You can currently take your pick of space gray, rose gold, gold, and silver colors. If all you desire is a comparatively tiny iPhone with a headphone jack and a fingerprint sensor, this might be the time to pick one up. Update January 23th at 7:18PM ET: The iPhone SE is back in stock at Apple's... |
HQ Trivia will run some games without cash prizes Posted: 23 Jan 2019 02:41 PM PST HQ Trivia surprised players yesterday with a different type of prize: in-game points, instead of the usual multi-thousand-dollar prize pool. The change is an experiment and not a sign of financial disaster, the company says, but players could see more points-only games in the future. Players complained about the lack of a cash reward on Reddit and Twitter, saying they play the game for the cash prizes. The change also revived concerns about the company's health. HQ's ranking in Apple's App Store fell to around 1,000 last week, down from the top 10 a year ago, according to App Annie. In the past several months, reports have pointed to a shrinking audience and a CEO change that came with its own complications. |
Galaxy S10 leak shows hole-punch display and cryptocurrency wallet Posted: 23 Jan 2019 02:02 PM PST Following the first leak of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 a few weeks back, more images have surfaced of the flagship phone's hole-punch display. The new leak also offers a first look at the Samsung Blockchain KeyStore app. The images were posted by Twitter user Ben Geskin, and first spotted by SamMobile. The native cryptocurrency wallet app is described on the splash page as a "secure and convenient place for your cryptocurrency," and will offer users the ability to import currencies like Ethereum, as well as use biometric authentication for security.

BlocBoy JB sues Epic Games over popular ‘Shoot’ dance emote Posted: 23 Jan 2019 01:41 PM PST James Baker, also known as rapper BloBoy JB, is the latest person to file a lawsuit against Fortnite developer Epic Games, this time over the use of his "Shoot" dance move in the popular battle royale hit. Known as "Hype" in the Fortnite community, "Shoot" is one of the most popular emotes that millions have people have seen performed. It requires the dancer to swing their arm and leg back and forth in a choreographed motion, as seen in the GIFs below. It was included as an unlockable emote in Fortnite's battle pass subscription service, which costs $10 for up to three months. The emote was not, however, ever sold directly for money. BlocBoy JB first asked his fans on Twitter if he should sue Epic Games, especially in wake of other... |
Dell’s new 75-inch 4K touchscreen for education is meant to replace the blackboard Posted: 23 Jan 2019 01:36 PM PST Dell announced a new monitor today: a massive 75-inch, 4K touchscreen panel specifically meant for education purposes as a sort of blackboard of the future — even though it's basically just a giant 4K TV. The Dell 75 4K Interactive Touch Monitor (C7520QT), as its officially known, is designed for collaborative work and interactive teaching. The display supports 20-point multi-touch, so that multiple users can work together on a single display, and works with either hands or styluses, which the company says is "compatible with virtually all industry-standard software." It's a similar idea to Microsoft's Surface Hub or Google's Jamboard, albeit with a greater focus on education and a weaker overall software push from Dell. ... |
Twitter bans, then restores, Beto O’Rourke parody account Posted: 23 Jan 2019 01:14 PM PST Late on Tuesday, Twitter banned an account that was parodying former House representative and potential presidential hopeful Beto O'Rourke's social media gimmicks and personal blog, according to The Hill. Later this afternoon, the account was restored. Shortly after O'Rourke failed to secure a Senate seat in Texas last November, he began blogging on Medium. He started infrequently writing about the people he met and places he traveled along the campaign trail in a lyrical, 20th century voice likened to that of Jack Kerouac or even Karl Ove Knausgård. "Maybe if I get moving, on the road, meet people, learn about what's going on where they live, have some adventure, go where I don't know and I'm not known, it'll clear my head, reset, I'll... |
Volvo’s Polestar offers interactive preview of the first native version of Android Auto Posted: 23 Jan 2019 12:55 PM PST Polestar, Volvo's electric performance brand, is teasing what will be the first native version of Android Auto in a new mobile web demo that was released on Wednesday. The app-like experience, viewable on smartphones or tablets, allows people to tap around an early version of the user interface that will launch on Polestar's second car, the aptly named Polestar 2, later this year. To view it, users need to click this link and choose "Add to Home Screen" from the share sheet in their mobile browser. After that, they can tap through the new icon on their home screen to launch a website that simulates the Android Auto-powered user interface. It's not fully operational, but it's enough to get a decent sense of what it will be like to tap... |

Facebook cracks down on fake news publishers with harsher punishments for bad pages Posted: 23 Jan 2019 11:49 AM PST Facebook has announced changes to how it handles and communicates violations of its policies around the publishing of fake news and misinformation, with the goal of preventing publishers that operate large networks of pages and groups from skirting bans. Starting today, Facebook says it will reserve the right to take down existing pages and groups that are simply affiliated with those that have violated the company's community standards, even if those pages or groups haven't technically broken any rules. Facebook says this is specifically to prevent users from using an adjacent or other existing page or group as a replacement once another has been flagged and taken down. Prior to this change, the page or group must have been made after... |
