Apple changes its iPhone photo contest page to say it will pay winners

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 05:33 PM PST

For the past two days, Apple faced criticism from artists and creators over its new "Shot on iPhone Challenge," which will use photos from 10 photographers in a series of marketing campaigns without any compensation. In our original story, I spoke to an artist about frustrations over a major company like Apple using artists' work for their own marketing purposes without compensating the artists in question.

But around the time this story was originally published at 6:33PM ET, Apple updated the original newsroom announcement for the contest. Apple informed us after publish that it had added the following language to the bottom:

Apple believes strongly that artists should be compensated for their work. Photographers who shoot the final 10...

Netflix reportedly developing a Resident Evil television series

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 04:32 PM PST

Netflix is in the process of developing a Resident Evil television series as a new original program for its streaming service, Deadline reports. While almost nothing is known about the plot, and the series is far from making any conclusive casting decisions, the report states the series would follow in the path of the six-part film series created by German production studio Constantin Films, which is said to be working with Netflix on the TV project.

That means the show will likely involve zombies and the shadowy bioweapons manufacturer Umbrella Corporation, which is at the center of the RE universe's undead outbreak. Unlike most of the games, which have mostly remained in the survival horror genre, the series may involve more splashy...

Apple’s next AirPods will support hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ voice commands

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 03:26 PM PST

Apple's first beta for iOS 12.2 contains strong evidence that we're nearing an AirPods hardware refresh. As reported by 9to5Mac, the beta includes a setup interface for "Hey Siri" that mentions hands-free voice commands on AirPods — a feature that isn't available with the current, first-generation pair of truly wireless earbuds. No other leaks about new AirPods have (yet) been uncovered in the iOS beta released earlier today. The original AirPods hit shelves over two years ago.

But there have been rumors of an updated set for months. Bloomberg reported last June that Apple was preparing a slight AirPods revamp with a new chip and "Hey Siri" support for release by the end of 2018 — probably to hit the holiday shopping rush. That...

House Democrats want to know if the FCC rigged a legal fight over 5G

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 03:21 PM PST

Leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission today demanding information concerning possible coordination between FCC officials and carriers in an ongoing legal fight.

The legal fight began last September, when the FCC issued an order to clear local regulatory barriers to nationwide 5G deployment. Democrats in the minority opposed the order, and dozens of cities and counties challenged the FCC's move in the Ninth Circuit, which is dominated by Clinton and Obama appointees. But a wave of other challenges from carriers including AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint also gave the appeal a chance to be heard in other, potentially more favorable circuits. Both the FCC and the carriers...

Amazon is taking more control over smart home tech

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 02:19 PM PST

Amazon now has a say in the development of a commonly used smart home standard, giving the company more power as it continues to push smart speakers, cameras, doorbells, and all other kinds of gadgets into its customers' homes.

As of today, Amazon has a seat on the board of the Zigbee Alliance, which oversees implementation of the Zigbee wireless protocol. Zigbee isn't nearly as popular as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, but you can think of it a lot like them — it's a wireless protocol for letting gadgets communicate; but unlike Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, Zigbee is particularly good for low-power devices and has the ability to travel longer distances, making it ideal for simple smart gadgets like a light switch.

DeepMind’s AI agents conquer human pros at Starcraft II

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 02:16 PM PST

<em>The games were streamed in DeepMind's London headquarters (pictured). </em>

AI agents developed by Google's DeepMind subsidiary have beaten human pros at Starcraft II — a first in the world of artificial intelligence. In a series of matches streamed on YouTube and Twitch, AI players beat the humans 10 games in a row. In the final match, pro player Grzegorz "MaNa" Komincz was able to snatch a single victory for humanity.

"The history of AI has been marked by a number of significant benchmark victories in different games," David Silver, DeepMind's research co-lead, said after the matches. "And I hope — though there's clearly work to do — that people in the future may look back at [today] and perhaps consider this as another step forward for what AI systems can do."

Beating humans at video games might seem like a...

Google asks Supreme Court to rule on when code can be copyrighted

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 01:53 PM PST

After years of back-and-forth legal rulings, Google is asking the Supreme Court to make the final call in its infamous dispute with Oracle. Today, the company announced it has filed a petition with the Court, asking the justices to determine the boundaries of copyright law in code.

The case dates back to 2010, when Oracle first accused Google of improperly using elements of Oracle's Java programming language to build Android. Oracle said that Google's use of Java application programing interfaces was a violation of copyright law. Google has responded that APIs are too fundamental to programming to be copyrighted.

The case has led to two jury trials, and several rulings have doled out wins and losses to both...

How to pick the Amazon Echo that’s right for you

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 01:50 PM PST

Alexa seems to be everywhere. As of early 2019, Alexa is on 100 million devices around the world (and counting), it has over 15,000 "skills," and it is quite possibly the first name you think of when a digital assistant comes to mind (which is some really bad news for Siri).

If you haven't tried Alexa yet, you may be interested in picking up one of Amazon's many Echo device, or the growing number of Alexa-ready speakers that are made by other companies. At this point, there are a whole lot of options that all do slightly different things and give Alexa slightly different abilities. Here are the differences between them and why you might want to pick one over the other.

Finally, an ad you can expense (ft. 2 Chainz)

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 01:37 PM PST

The podcaster and pundit Matt Christman tweeted something prophetic on January 20th, 2017, the day Donald Trump was inaugurated as the president of the United States of America: "This is the stupidest day in American history, a record that will be broken by every subsequent day in American history." Two years later, I can exclusively confirm that he was correct. Each day brings new horrors, a fresh level of hell to navigate. For example, today I learned that the eels in the River Thames — there are eels in the Thames? — have gone insane on cocaine from Lehman Brothers bankers, who were apparently holding a 10-year anniversary party, for some reason? This is all real. It has made me wonder who's running the show.

As stupid as that is,...

Kids’ movies are ready to escape Amblin’s influence

Posted: 24 Jan 2019 12:34 PM PST

If you're wondering why the vaguely generic-looking family adventure movie The Kid Who Would Be King is receiving surprisingly positive reviews, look no further than writer-director Joe Cornish. He isn't a major marquee name in the United States, but he wrote and directed the 2011 film Attack the Block, which gave a low-budget alien / monster feature a distinctly English, class-conscious spin. His film credits since then have been scant but enviable: he co-wrote Steven Spielberg's Tintin movie with Steven Moffat and Edgar Wright, received a story credit on Marvel's Ant-Man (thanks to his involvement in the film's initial development under Wright), and made a cameo in The Last Jedi.

His long-awaited second film as writer-director, The Kid...
