Audeze’s motion-aware headphones will soon recreate your head gestures in-game

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 03:29 PM PST

If you're a big fan of first-person shooter games, Audeze has a cool new feature to tell you about. Its Mobius headphones, launched last year with precise head tracking, can now accept Head Gesture Keybinds, which is to say you'll be able to do the equivalent of pressing a button on the keyboard with the motion of your head. So if you've always wanted to lean out of cover by actually leaning your head, this Mobius upgrade brings that within reach. Audeze is currently beta-testing Head Gesture Keybinds and will release them as a software update early in 2019.

One of the more unique and intriguing pairs headphones of 2018, the Mobius use Waves Nx head-tracking tech to create a three-dimensional audio space that seems fixed in place rather...

London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports have purchased their own anti-drone systems

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 11:53 AM PST

At the end of December, Gatwick Airport, the second largest airport in the UK was shut down after a drone was reportedly sighted flying nearby. Flights resumed at the airport three days later, after the British Army reportedly brought in an Israeli-built drone defense system. To protect themselves from future incidents, both Gatwick and Heathrow airports have invested in their own anti-drone systems.

Heathrow and Gatwick confirmed that they've spent millions to acquire and install their own "military-grade anti-drone apparatus," while Scotland's Edinburgh Airport has also indicated that it's taking its own precautions with foot patrols and expand some no-fly zones surrounding the facility. While two people were arrested after the...

Apple trolls CES with a giant dig at Android and Alexa privacy

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 11:14 AM PST

There's a giant ad on the side of a building in Las Vegas, making a wordplay on the classic "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" line. Nothing unusual about that, except it's been set up by Apple just in time for the Consumer Electronics Show's arrival in town, an event that the iPhone maker traditionally pretends isn't even happening.

Taking over the side of a hotel strategically positioned right next to the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), Apple's multi-story ad keeps things simple: "What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone." Below that resides a link to apple.com/privacy, where the company expounds at greater length about the security of things like Apple Pay, Face ID, and the health data collected by the Apple Watch....

The government shutdown is driving users to illegal router settings

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 10:00 AM PST

A router, poised to broadcast illegally

On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission closed the majority of its operations, a result of the ongoing government shutdown. The FCC enforces the rules for all the wireless broadcasts in the United States, and many of most of its important enforcement mechanisms are now closed for the duration of the shutdown, which President Trump recently warned could last months or even years.

This means that — hypothetically! — if you wanted to illegally broadcast in violation of someone else's spectrum rights, this would be the perfect time to do it.

There are a bunch of channels on a standard router, corresponding to overlapping portions of the 2.4GHz band. Generally, it's recommended to set your devices to 1, 6 and 11 to maximize...

Mystery Brand responds to scam, gambling accusations after YouTube controversy

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 09:39 AM PST

Brian

Mystery Brand, the controversial loot box-style website promoted by YouTube creators like Jake Paul and Brian "RiceGum" Le, has confirmed it doesn't own some of the prizes offered to users, and collects others through a public online marketplace.

The quality of prizes offered to users through Mystery Brand varies from cheap fidget spinners to California mansions and luxury cars. Mystery Brand teamed up with Paul and Le for sponsored videos, reportedly paying at least $100,000 for both creators through sponsorship deals. The videos showed Le and Paul winning an assortment of prizes, including a pair of Off-White Nike Air Max 97 shoes (valued at $835) and an iPhone XS (valued at $1,000). A number Mystery Brand users on Reddit and Twitter...

New trailers: Us, Stranger Things, The Punisher, and more

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 09:00 AM PST

I saw a whole bunch of movies over holidays, and the one I was by far the most excited for was Vice. I had, no joke, probably watched the trailer for it a dozen times, which is something I never do. (After watching through two dozen trailers for this column every week, I'm hardly going to watch any trailer more than I have to).

Vice was immensely entertaining and very funny. The thing that really stood out to me was just how comfortable director Adam McKay is in toying around with the medium. Much like the explanatory interruptions in The Big Short, the edit of Vice is constantly used to address the viewer directly, explaining things to them, making jokes or excuses, even transporting them into essentially a different timeline.

It's the...

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 08:00 AM PST

Things have slowed down considerably since Black Friday and the winter holidays, but there are already a few good deals popping back up — especially for anyone who just picked up a Nintendo Switch. We've got a few suggestions on what to spend your holiday gift cards on and a sweet site-wide sale from Rakuten.

Let's dig in.

A few must-have Nintendo Switch games are almost $20 off at GameStop, Target, and Best Buy until January 10th. You won't find Super Mario Odyssey or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild here, but there are plenty of essentials to get your game collection off the ground.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (digital) is $41.99 at GameStop and Best Buy. Target has the physical copy for the same price.
  • Octopath Traveler (digital) is...

Apple seeks to end bent iPad Pro controversy with new support page

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 07:50 AM PST

Hoping to put a lid on any perceived controversy around bent 2018 iPad Pros, Apple published a support page late Friday night that details the device's manufacturing process. The page is titled "iPad Pro unibody enclosure design" and starts off by saying that Apple's latest tablet is "strong, light, and durable." The company goes on to note that the new design has flat edges "instead of the curved edges found on previous-generation iPad models." (Some believe that these straight edges are making slight bends more noticeable and easier to see with the naked eye, and Apple later mentions that very point.)

Apple focuses the article on the Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad Pro, which has seen the most reports of a slight bend — almost always at the...

Calm yourself with this 3D printing demo video

Posted: 05 Jan 2019 07:00 AM PST

A scientist brushing away a gray powder to uncover a newly 3D-printed machine part is the most soothing video you'll see this week. It's up there with Bob Ross painting a flawless tree, or even someone vacuuming perfect lines in a carpet. And the fact that it comes out of one of the country's major national laboratories makes the relaxing video even more charming.

The hand holding the brush is attached to Amy Elliott, a research scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory who specializes in 3D printing technology. The video starts after the printing itself is finished. Elliott uses a kind of 3D printing that involves squirting layer after layer of a glue-like binder into powdered metal, forming a tool or machine part that Elliott has...
