New Aladdin trailer from the 2019 Grammys introduces Will Smith’s Genie

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 06:01 PM PST

A trailer for Disney's upcoming live-action adaptation of Aladdin aired during the 2019 Grammys finally gave everyone what they wanted — Will Smith's Genie.

The first teaser for the film, which debuted in October 2018, left the Genie out. New images of Smith in costume as the popular and beloved character have since been released. Entertainment Weekly spoke to Smith about the role, which was originally performed by the late Robin Williams, in December 2018. Smith also spoke about the differences between his version of the character and Williams'.

There's a little bit less mimicking — there's a James Brown piece that we do but a little bit less mimicking. The thing that will be the major addition from me playing the Genie is the hip-hop...

MGM-owned Epix jumps into the streaming service arena with EpixNow

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 02:20 PM PST

MGM-owned television network Epix is jumping into the crowded streaming service market. The company announced at the Television Critics Association press tour that its new streaming service, EpixNow, is launching today with a large library of films and the channel's original television shows.

The service is a spinoff from the premium cable channel, which launched in 2009 and currently counts 15 million subscribers. It costs $5.99 a month, and is now available for Apple and Google devices, and will soon be available for Roku and Amazon Fire TV users. Users will also be able to download programming and stream video to connected devices.

While the channel is owned by MGM, it's not a streaming service that covers the larger studio. An Epix...

Epix is turning Slate’s Slow Burn podcast into a documentary series

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 01:04 PM PST

Epix has greenlit a six-episode adaptation of Slate's hit podcast Slow Burn, a series that explored the Watergate scandal and how it eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. Podcast host Leon Neyfakh will be an executive producer and narrator for the series.

The series is expected to launch in late 2019 on Epix. Slate launched the eight-episode podcast series in 2017 which drew parallels between the slowly-building scandal that tanked the Nixon Administration, and that of the ongoing investigations into President Donald Trump. The series has earned widespread acclaim, and recently took home the Podcast of the Year at iHeartRadio's inaugural Podcast Awards last month.

Slate produced a second season of Slow Burn l...

Google is letting some users test its AR navigation feature for Google Maps

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 12:11 PM PST

At last year's I/O developer's conference, Google showed off a new augmented reality feature for Google Maps, which would provide people with directions from your phone's camera in realtime. As my colleague Chaim Gartenberg noted, it's a bit like what was promised with Google Glass, but without the headset. The Wall Street Journal's David Pierce got to try out an early version of the feature.

He says that while it "isn't likely to be your primary turn-by-turn option, it's a huge step in the right direction for Google Maps." He described how the feature worked — the app picks up a person's location via GPS, and then uses Street View data to narrow it down to your exact location. Once his location was pinned down, it displayed big arrows...

British mobile users could face roaming fees in the event of a no-deal Brexit

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 11:00 AM PST

The UK is working to come up with a trade agreement with the European Union and is facing a rapidly approaching a deadline before a mandated withdrawal from the economic bloc. In the event that there is no agreement, the country could face a range of consequences, including higher mobile roaming charges for British users, according to a memo from the UK's Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

The UK has until March 29th, 2019 to leave the EU — a process that has left Prime Minister Theresa May's government scrambling to put together an exit agreement that will oversee the country's economic ties with its neighbors. That isn't going well, and if the UK and EU parliaments don't ratify any agreement that comes up, the UK will...

Extreme weather is sucking the life from your electric car

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 10:00 AM PST

As more affordable and longer-range electric cars hit the market, the long-predicted shift to battery-powered transportation seems poised to actually happen. But a serious challenge remains: battery-sucking cold weather.

New research from AAA reveals that when the mercury dips to 20 degrees Fahrenheit, the average driving range of an electric car decreases by 41 percent. When colder temperatures hit, EV owners have the same instinct as their internal combustion engine-driving brethren, which is to crank up the heat as high as it will go. This puts a serious strain on an EV's battery, reducing the overall range and increasing the need to charge more often to minimize the chance of being stranded by a dead battery.

How to watch the 2019 Grammy Awards online

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 09:00 AM PST

The 61st Grammy Awards ceremony airs tonight at 8PM ET / 5PM PT on CBS, celebrating 2018's best music, and the artists, producers, mixing engineers, and more responsible for making it. Of course, if you're someone who enjoys watching the red carpet proceedings that usher the famous attendees into the venue, that will begin a bit earlier at 5PM ET / 2PM PT on Grammy.com. Alicia Keys, a 15-time Grammy award winner, will host this year's awards show, taking over for James Corden, who hosted both the 2017 and 2018 Grammys.

As mentioned, CBS will be televising the Grammys, and no free live stream will be made available. That's no issue for those who get the CBS channel over-the-air with an antenna, or those who subscribe to cable or...

Create emoji masterpieces with any image using this fun web tool

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 08:00 AM PST

The emojification of human culture is not complete until every object, verb, symbol, emotion, and image is captured using this once-obscure, now all-consuming pictorial format. That is why Emoji Mosaic is so helpful. Simply feed this free web tool any image you like, and it'll churn out an emojified version for you in real time.

It was made by programmer and designer Eric Lewis, and though it's been floating around the web for a while, it was only brought to our attention on Twitter this week. It's a fun and diverting thing to play with, populating the image in front of you in real time and leaving you to scrutinize the results and work out which emoji was used for each shade.

It produces impressive results, whether you're feeding it...

Apple is offering an extended Apple Music trial during the Grammys for Shazam users

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 07:53 AM PST

Apple acquired Shazam last year, and it's using the music search app to provide a special offer for users who are watching tonight's Grammy Awards (as spotted by 9to5Mac). They'll get a rundown of the award show in the app, and can unlock an extended, four-month free trial for Apple Music.

The company is promoting the offer on a card in its App Store: "Viewers at home can also Shazam the Grammy Awards at any point during the broadcast to identify songs from the awards show and unlock a special offer from Apple Music." The app will show off a timeline of music from the show, and anyone who uses the app to identify a song will get the extended offer.

That's an additional month above the usual free trial for new Apple Music subscribers —...

DoorDash and Amazon Flex will keep their tipping policies, despite Instacart outcry

Posted: 10 Feb 2019 07:26 AM PST

Last week, Instacart reversed a controversial policy in which it took tips from delivery workers to meet the promised base pay rate that it promised after outcry from workers and customers. However, despite that controversy, companies like DoorDash and Amazon Flex are continuing their own, similar policies.

Companies like Instacart, DoorDash, and Amazon Flex provide pickup and delivery services for its users — users select items via an app from a store, which are then purchased and picked up by third-party delivery workers, who are paid a minimum rate for their efforts. Back in November, Instacart changed how it paid its delivery workers, saying that it would provide them with an "earnings estimate, and a minimum $10 payment for their...
